Yes - booking the Sport Equipment add-on during initial booking is materially cheaper than after booking or at airport kiosk/counter

  • Kite/kiteboard gear has no dedicated category.
  • AirAsia's fee schedules define 'Sports equipment' as Golf, Surfboard, Bicycle, Skis/Snowboard and Diving gear;
  • any other sporting equipment not named (which includes kite bags) is 'accepted as part of your checked baggage allowance', i.e. treated as a standard checked bag unless the rider books the generic 'Sport Equipment' add-on.

Before you pack

3 points

  1. Declare boards as 'surfboard' to claim the free 15kg allowance where the Free Surfboard Policy applies to your route/fare
  2. Kite bags (bars/lines/kites without a board) don't qualify for the free surfboard allowance - pre-book the generic Sport Equipment add-on online well before departure to avoid the higher kiosk/airport rate
  3. Fee schedules are set per AOC (AK/Malaysia, QZ/Indonesia, FD/Thailand, Z2/Philippines) in local currency and change periodically - check the specific country's fee PDF before flying

What riders report at the counter

1 report

  • In the Philippines and Indonesia, AirAsia 'offers lots of weight options to book extra, and their pricing is fair' compared with other regional carriers.
