A kite bag is a 2 metre object that weighs less than your suitcase and gets priced like furniture. Ninety-five carriers sit on the airline page. Thirty-three count a kite bag inside the standard checked allowance, so you pay nothing while you stay under the caps.
Who flies it free
Emirates carries it as a standard bag inside the free checked allowance up to 300cm combined dimensions (2026). Qatar Airways is free inside the standard allowance to 23kg (2026). Etihad gives one set up to 30kg and 300cm (2026), then bills a second set at the excess rate, reported around USD 250 (2026).
Air France is free if the single bag is under 300cm and 23kg and you declare it at least 48 hours ahead, except on Economy Light and Basic fares, which need a baggage option bought first (2026).
Royal Air Maroc takes one kitesurf set up to 23kg and 220x40x40cm (2026). Qantas allows 32kg and 277cm (2026), Air New Zealand 2m and 23kg (2026), EVA Air one kiteboard plus one pair of kites and lines at 32kg and 203cm linear (2026).
Southwest is the American outlier: free as one of the first two checked bags under 50 lb and 62 in, oversize waived (2026). Hawaiian dropped its surfboard charge on January 8, 2025 and has not brought it back. Egyptair charges gear from 158cm to 203cm at 50% of the applicable excess rate rather than the full rate (2026).
British Airways counts it as a standard checked bag, 23kg in economy and 32kg in business. The length cap is 190cm, which a coffin bag will fail. Over 23kg it applies a flat heavy-bag fee, GBP 65 / EUR 75 / USD 100 (2023 policy year), instead of a sports surcharge.
What the rest charge
Under EUR 50 (2026) a direction is low-cost handling-fee territory; EUR 50 to EUR 100 (2026) is the European short-haul mainstream and the flat North American board fee; above that is long haul, where the bag stops being a rounding error on the ticket.

| Wizz Air | EUR 45 online, EUR 65 airport (2026), per bag per flight | yes, EUR 20 cheaper (2026) |
| Aegean Airlines | EUR 50 per direction (2026); some listings EUR 55 (2026) | yes, the call centre closes 2 hours out |

| Air Europa | EUR 75-180 per direction by route (2026) | yes |
| ITA Airways | EUR 40-75 kite tier, EUR 160-190 long haul (2026) | not strictly required, the airport tier costs more |
| Aerolineas Argentinas | USD 150 web, USD 195 airport, long haul (2026) | web, always cheaper than the airport |
| Fiji Airways | FJD 470 per bulky item, Fiji to the US or Canada (2026) | prepaid is cheaper |
The carriers with no published number, and the caps behind every row, are on the full table.
The three biggest single fees
Fiji Airways holds the largest published number: FJD 470 (2026) for one bulky item on the Fiji to US, Honolulu or Canada legs, one direction, so FJD 940 return before Fiji Link adds FJD 115 (2026) per bulky item on a domestic connection.
Aerolineas Argentinas is next if you turn up cold, USD 195 (2026) at the airport on long haul against USD 150 (2026) booked ahead, which comes to USD 390 return (2026) for never opening the booking page.
Air Europa's top tier is EUR 180 (2026) a direction on long haul outside its Americas list, EUR 360 return (2026). Etihad's second-set charge of around USD 250 (2026) beats all three per item, but it lands on the extra bag rather than the first one.
What moved this cycle
Twenty-six airline policy lines changed across sixteen carriers in the September 2026 update. The table behind it dates from August 2026.
- Air Canada dropped the old kiteboard-against-surfboard split for one flat CA/US$100 to $120 per board each way (2026), and two fees apply if two boards ride in one container. Its length cap went from 203cm to 292cm: the 203cm figure only ever applied to Air Canada Express CRJ900 and Dash 8-400 aircraft.
- American Airlines moved the flat $150 (2026) off kiteboards. A watersports board pays the destination's standard checked-bag fee up to 50 lb, then the standard overweight fee from 50 lb to 70 lb, and no oversize fee; the flat $150 overweight charge is the pre-April-2024 rule and is legacy. The flat $150 (2026) per two pieces now belongs to windsurfing rigs only.
- Fiji Airways replaced its flat FJD 100 regional rate with an origin-and-destination matrix, FJD 170 (2026) from Fiji to Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific, rising to FJD 470 (2026) to North America. The bulky-item weight cap went from 23kg to 30kg.
- easyJet's old figure was an approximation. The tier that fits a kite quiver is large sports equipment, GBP 55 online and GBP 60 at the airport (2026); the GBP 45 online tier (2026) is small equipment, and prebooking is not mandatory.
- Cabo Verde Airlines keeps EUR 100 (2026) a direction, but the 32kg ceiling belongs to windsurf gear: kitesurf and surfboard equipment cap at 23kg.
- Pegasus lost its kite category. There is no kite line and no USD pricing on the current table, so gear goes under Bicycle/Surfboard at 850 TRY domestic or 65 EUR international (2026).
- Spirit Airlines began an orderly wind-down on 2 May 2026, so its $100 (2026) per direction is gone with the airline. GOL's maximum length came down from 320cm to 292cm, FlySafair's went up from 190cm to 250cm, and Winair's linear limit is 157cm rather than 158cm.
Four things to check before you pay
The turboprop is what actually refuses your bag. Bangkok Airways caps a board bag at 170cm on ATR 72 aircraft against 277cm on the Airbus jets; Garuda's ATR legs stop at 160cm and its CRJ1000 at 230cm; Olympic Air caps each item at 1.70 m on ATR-operated island routes; Qantas drops to 240cm on QantasLink Dash 8 aircraft against 277cm on the mainline fleet.
Prebooking is a discount rather than a formality: Norwegian EUR 25 (2026) cheaper online, Wizz Air EUR 20 (2026), Iberia the distance between EUR 40 and EUR 77 (2026). Air Seychelles carries kite equipment on international flights only, not on the domestic inter-island hops.
That bites if the spot is on another island. IndiGo's sports-equipment handling fee cannot be bought on its ATR aircraft or on Lite Fare tickets, both common on short Indian domestic sectors.
