Before you pack
2 points
- Keep the bag under 50 lb/23 kg to avoid excess-weight fees and to stay in the standard checked-bag category rather than the $150 oversize special-items bucket.
- Present the item clearly as a surfboard/kiteboard bag (not loose kite/windsurfing rig parts) to be routed into the favorable standard-bag policy introduced for travel on/after April 17, 2024.
What riders report at the counter
2 reports
- One rider was charged a flat $150 fee when the gear was classified as an oversize special item rather than as a standard board bag.
- Gate agents dispute what counts as 'sports equipment' — one questioned whether curling gear qualified. Classification at check-in is agent-dependent.
