What it costs and what fits

Fee
  • Free for 1 piece of sports equipment up to 23kg (separate from, and in addition to, the standard checked baggage allowance).
  • A second board/piece, or weight beyond 23kg, is charged against the passenger's standard Free Baggage Allowance (FBA) or billed as excess.
Max weight
23 kg
Max length
300 on mainline jets, 230 on CRJ1000, 160 on ATR cm
Pieces
1 free piece per passenger; additional pieces charged
Pre-booking
Not stated as strictly required, but give advance notice anyway
Small aircraft
ATR-operated Garuda routes cap sports equipment/board length at just 160cm - well under a typical kite coffin/quiver bag length - and the CRJ1000 caps at 230cm; only mainline jet routes (up to 300cm) comfortably fit a full kite quiver bag.
Filed as
  • Free 'sports equipment' allowance - Garuda's baggage info page lists surfboards, bicycles, golf clubs and dive equipment as qualifying items;
  • kiteboards are not separately named but riders report kite quivers are commonly accepted under this same sports-equipment allowance when declared as surf/board equipment.

Before you pack

3 points

  1. Explicitly request the 'sports equipment' free allowance at check-in - it is separate from your normal checked bag and gate/counter staff won't always apply it automatically
  2. If flying an ATR-operated domestic leg (common on smaller Indonesian island routes), confirm the 160cm length cap before packing - many kite quiver bags exceed this and may need to be split or shipped separately
  3. Only one piece travels free; a second kiteboard or spare board should be planned for as excess weight against your standard checked allowance

What riders report at the counter

1 report

  • The free 23kg sports-gear allowance is the one Bali travellers most often miss, because they don't know to ask for it separately from checked baggage — a second board in the same bag is weighed against the ordinary checked allowance instead.
