Book Santa Maria for August and you have booked the wrong month. Every operator with money on the answer gives the same window: one centre runs from the beginning of November to the end of April, one camp runs October to April, and the school that publishes figures calls December to April the steady stretch at about 12 knots average and June to October 9-10 knots (2026). That is not a quieter season. It is a different island. The rain arrives, prices drop and half the kite economy shuts.
November is a shoulder month, not the season proper, and booking it is a gamble that sometimes pays. May and June are the declining edge. That leaves five months.
Two counts of the same season
A wind table covering 2003-2014 puts days at 4 Beaufort or more at 89 percent in January, 93 in February, 91 in March, 92 in April and 97 in May, then 85 in June, 55 in July, 50 in August, 65 in September, 82 in October, 88 in November and 85 in December.
Read on its own it makes May the windiest month of the year. The operators call May shoulder. Both readings still stand. The summer collapse is agreed; the shape of the spring is not.
Santa Maria has two waterfronts
The town beach is not Kite Beach. Kite Beach is the Costa da Fragata stretch east of town, a bay of about 2 km, and the run out to it is 10 to 15 minutes: a taxi at around EUR 5 one way (2021-2023), a school shuttle at EUR 8 a day or EUR 50 a week (2026), a bike at EUR 15 a day (2026) or a hire car at about EUR 50 a day (2026).
Nobody rents a car for this. Riders share the taxi once they know a few faces, and the club transfer runs EUR 2 per person per trip (2026). One hotel on the town beachfront hosts a water sports centre on the property, and it is the exception. If you book a beachfront room expecting to walk to your kite, check which beach.
Most centres shut around 17:00, so an evening session means carrying your own gear rather than relying on the storage. The beach empties from about half past three in the afternoon, which is also when the wind starts easing. The strong hours are roughly 09:00 to 15:00.
The tide decides which sport you get
At low water the bay goes flat and the shallows run right up to the sand, which is the session for freestyle and for anyone still crashing. At high water it makes steep short-period waves that riders use for jumping, and the reef about 300 m out gets heavier and cleaner on the outer line.
It is buoyed in yellow. Less confident riders are told to stay downwind of it. The trade arrives NNE to NE, diagonally onshore, so a blown session drifts you back to the beach.
Sizes follow the month rather than the day: 12-18 knots in November, 20-25 in January and February, 15-18 in May. A 75-85 kg rider is on 8-9 m at the peak and wants an 11 or 12 m in the shoulder months, and a 9-12 m pair covers the whole main season.
What you can buy on the sand, and what you cannot
There is no rescue boat at Kite Beach. What is sold there is a launch-and-landing watch: an attendant sets the kite up, launches you, lands you and keeps an eye out, at EUR 15 (2026) for 2 hours, EUR 20 (2026) for the day, EUR 75 (2026) for the week, EUR 135 (2026) for two.
You will hear three versions of the cover on that beach: a rescue service on it, a safety boat that actually sits in Santa Maria bay a headland away, and no reliable rescue at all. Treat the watch as what you are actually buying.
The rest is on the price lists. Full kit is EUR 70 a day or EUR 275 a week (2026), a storage box EUR 15 a day or EUR 85 a week (2026), and a ten or eleven hour beginner course in a group of two runs EUR 350 to EUR 365 (2026), with one camp starting at EUR 280 (2025).
Past a week, fly with your own kit. The ambulance number is 130, healthcare on the island is officially very basic and limited, and the real hospitals are on other islands.
Who should not book this
Anyone learning alone. Schools do teach here on the strength of the cross-onshore wind and the sandy launch, and the people who have kited it disagree. The verdict fits in one line: "It's not for learning nor beginner, would go again there". Chop and shorebreak, waves outside and a shallow at low water all need managing at once, and about 150 kiters are out at the busiest times.
Ponta Preta is a different sport. Fast reef right-hander, 3-6 m on winter swell, cross-off wind and a rocky launch with shorebreak on it. Sal schools will not let their rental gear go there, so you ride your own or you watch.
The GKA Kite-Surf World Cup ran on it from 16 to 21 February 2026. At Ponta Sino the rule everyone repeats is not legal: do not ride past the point, because the next stop downwind is open Atlantic. Ponta Leme and Murdeira are side-off to offshore, and Murdeira has rock at both ends of the beach and nothing standing by.
The paperwork and the bag on the sand
EASE pre-registration has to be completed at least 5 days before you fly, and from 1 July 2026 turning up without it means paying double the Airport Security Tax at the border.
The amount is not published, and the EUR 30 that circulates for 2026 is unconfirmed. Cape Verde fixes the escudo at 110 to the euro, a cheap restaurant meal is around 550 escudos (2025) and a draft beer 295-450 escudos (2025).
Sal gets named in official crime advice for bag snatching, which makes the bag you leave on the sand for a two-hour session the one thing worth paying to lock up. The airport is 16 km north, a taxi is EUR 12-15 (2025) and the shared minivan about EUR 1 (2025).
