Santa Maria is a compact, self-contained resort town at the south end of a flat, arid, salt-pan island - unlike a lot of wind-only spots, you don't need to base elsewhere for a bit of life: restaurants, bars and the beach are all within walking distance of Kite Beach. It suits riders who want near-guaranteed wind eight-plus months a year, a short flight from Europe, and easy logistics (walkable town, English/Italian/French tourist infrastructure). It is not the place for deep Cape Verdean culture, big nightlife, or budget travel - it's a desert-island resort strip, prices run mid-to-high for the region, and real Creole culture (music, Carnival, food scene) is a flight away on other islands. Families and all-inclusive resort guests share the same beach as the kite/freestyle/wave crowd, so it's a mixed, low-key scene rather than a hardcore kite-camp bubble.
