Good to know before you go2
- Peak kite season here runs opposite to the beach-tourism high season — plan an autumn/winter/spring trip for wind, not a July/August one.
- Praia das Sinas specifically goes quiet in summer northeast wind, per the local school's own warning — check which of the three beaches is on for the day's direction rather than defaulting to one.
The spots
Praia do Bao
Praia do Bao, also called O Vao, is the beach by the bridge onto A Illa de Arousa in the Ria de Arousa.

Praia do Bao: the long version, the launch and the rules
More on Praia do Bao
It gets ridden from autumn through spring, not in high summer. The wind that works is south to southeast, and winter southerlies are the ideal setup. The sand is sheltered, Blue Flag listed and narrow for kite handling: about 10-20 m of width depending on tide. Summer fails twice over, because the zone is not regulated for nautical sports and the wind is unfavorable. Water sits around 17.6 C in August and 12.8 C in February, so you are in a wetsuit whenever you come. Treat it as a local intermediate-plus freeride beach rather than a school base.
Getting on the water
Beach launch on the O Bao sand by the bridge into A Illa de Arousa, used outside summer.
If it goes wrong
Nothing when you need it. A lifeguard tower and base sit on the sand about 210-220 m from the launch and the beach carries a Blue Flag, but that is summer cover, and this beach is ridden in autumn, winter and spring, when nobody is there. The Casa do Mar health centre on the island is about 1 km away and 112 is the emergency number in Galicia. There is no kite-specific rescue and the zone is not regulated for nautical sports, so nothing is organised around riders at all.
Room to rig
Limited: roughly 10 m of beach width at high tide and 20 m at low, on a beach given as 500 m long for O Vao.
Rules and access
2026: Praia do Bao is not regulated for nautical sports in high summer, and summer wind conditions are not favorable for kitesurfing.
Praia da Canteira
Of the three beaches in this A Illa de Arousa group, Canteira is the one with a solid kite record: a local school keeps its base here and rides it through the year.
intermediateIn seasonno month named for this spot
The model here carries the month's average wind rather than a count of windy days: it reaches 13.5 kt in October, the strongest month it models for this spot.
Praia da Canteira: the long version, the launch and the rules
More on Praia da Canteira
The beach is regulated for kitesurf and carries an informational sign for kiters, which is more than most Galician beaches give you. A Canteira is sheltered, 650 m long, coarse sand. North and northeast are the working directions. Typical wind strength is not published anywhere, so bring a spread of kites rather than a plan. Expect company: traditional dornas get beached here, and every other water-sports user turns up on a strong north-wind day. Check Canteira first when the forecast is north-quadrant, and save Bao for when it swings south or southeast.
Getting on the water
Sandy, sheltered launch; the local school works off it.
Room to rig
Moderate. The beach is 650 m long; rigging width and tide effect are unconfirmed.
Rules and access
2026: Praia da Canteira is a regulated kitesurf beach, with an informational sign for kiters on the beach.
Praia das Sinas
Praia das Sinas is a ria beach at Vilanova de Arousa, about 800 m long and narrow, with calm water and a semi-urban, wooded edge behind the sand.
intermediateadvancedIn seasonno month named for this spot
The model here carries the month's average wind rather than a count of windy days: it reaches 13.1 kt in March, the strongest month it models for this spot.
Praia das Sinas: the long version, the launch and the rules
More on Praia das Sinas
West and northwest are the winds that work here. In summer northeast the kite zone sits sheltered and under-winded, so that forecast is not worth the drive. It is a bathing beach first: occupation is medium through the year and heavy in summer, with swimmers on the sand and in the water. Boats anchor off the beach, so nothing about this is an empty training lagoon. Nobody has published a typical wind speed for it. Ride it as a conditional local freeride beach rather than a regulated summer kite spot.
Getting on the water
Semi-urban launch on an 800 m cove-shaped ria beach, used when west or northwest wind fits.
If it goes wrong
Beach rescue is listed for summer; kitesurf rescue is unconfirmed.
Room to rig
Moderate but narrow: average width is given as about 18 m by one count and 15 m by another.
Rules and access
2026: Praia das Sinas is not regulated for nautical sports in summer, and there are many bathers both in the water and on the sand.

What riders say
5 recurring claims
O Bao is mostly an autumn, winter and spring call; summer wind is repeatedly described as poor and the water-sports setup is not regulated then.
consensus×4 riders
Canteira is the island's clearest kite base: used all year, signed for kiters, and usually tied to north or northeast wind.
consensus×3 riders
Sinas is useful on west or northwest wind, but summer northeast gets blanked and the beach fills with swimmers.
majority×2 riders
Facilities for kiters have been a sore point; the local club complained of operating outdoors without shower, changing room or a base despite other nautical buildings nearby.
majority×1 rider
The school review evidence is small but positive: the one visible booking review liked the treatment, teaching, equipment and beach choice.
