Guadalmar / Los Álamos kite zone & Rincón de la Victoria

beginner-friendlygear rental

2 spots · 3 schools

This is greater Malaga's urban kite scene: a small, regulated launch strip squeezed next to the airport runway at Guadalmar, with a calmer school beach about 20 minutes east in Rincon de la Victoria.
It suits riders who want city infrastructure, nightlife and easy transit built around the sessions rather than an untouched kite trip, and it does not suit anyone wanting space — the legal zone at Guadalmar is tiny and shared.

The spot cards

Good to know before you go3

  • The legal kite zone at Guadalmar/Los Alamos is a narrow strip of roughly 300 m next to Malaga airport's approach — sources disagree on the exact boundaries, so confirm locally before rigging
  • Guadalmar is described as busiest June-August, with around 40 kites out on a good day
  • Guadalmar suits freeride/freestyle on flat-to-choppy water rather than waves; wave riders should look further along the coast (e.g. El Chaparral)

Guadalmar / Los Álamos kite zone: the long version, the launch and the rules

More on Guadalmar / Los Álamos kite zone

Schools use it for lessons and body-drag work, and locals ride freeride, freestyle and foil there. The water is open Mediterranean beach: flat on a good day, chop on a bad one. Usable directions are not settled, with E and SW named alongside SE thermal and a stronger N, and poniente reportedly concentrated here by the Guadalhorce valley. North wind is gusty and offshore. Not a beginner condition. No official current plan map of the legal boundary was found, so treat the edges of the strip as approximate and ask a school or read the beach signage before you rig. It works from March to October, and through summer bathers fill both sides of the zone.

A homologated nautical-sports strip at Guadalmar / Campo de Golf San Julián, about 300 m of beach between Chiringuito La Traviata and the golf-course side.

    Rules and access

2016-2026: A reserved/homologated kitesurf or non-motor nautical-sports area exists at Campo de Golf San Julián/Guadalmar. The approximately 300 m zone is authorized by Junta de Andalucía and Capitanía Marítima inside the Plan de Playas; the official current boundary document was not found.

Rincón de la Victoria: the long version, the launch and the rules

More on Rincón de la Victoria

The local school teaches most of its beginners here, on a long dark-sand strip just east of Malaga with room to lay out lines and fly a kite on land before anyone gets wet. The main beach is urban and 3.6 km long, backed by a maintained promenade, and the water in front of it is normally calm with moderate surf. Levante is the wind, side-shore on this south-facing Costa del Sol Oriental coast, and there are no long-term wind statistics worth leaning on for the local station, so treat any forecast as a starting point. From May to October the beach fills up, and that is the constraint: this is not a remote freeride beach, and on a hot Saturday there is nowhere to put a kite. The water is not always the temperature the calendar suggests, because cold upwelling on the Malaga coast can drop it in a day. No official kite zone or launch corridor is published, only general beach-management rules.

    Getting on the water

Beach launch on the long dark-sand strip, with room to lay lines and fly the kite on land before going in, and shallow water close to shore. The meeting point moves along the beach with the forecast when a school is running the session. The first 200 m of water is priority bathing water under the municipal bando, so getting out and back has to be worked around swimmers in season.

    If it goes wrong

The 2026 municipal beach plan covers aquatic rescue, lifeguarding and evacuation from the watchtowers and a main module. Kite-specific rescue is unconfirmed.

    Rules and access

2026: the municipal beach bando makes the strip from the sand out to 200 m priority water for swimming and diving, and prohibits navigation of any craft inside it except authorised ones. Floating craft of any propulsion may not go further than one nautical mile from shore. Craft must enter and leave the water through the designated varadero lanes, not off the open beach, and bathing is prohibited in those lanes. Motor vehicles, camping and fires on the sand are banned, and rod fishing is prohibited between 10:00 and 21:00. Kitesurfing is not named anywhere in the bando and there is no marked or authorised kite zone on this beach; the two authorised kite areas on this coast are Guadalmar in Torremolinos, a roughly 300 m stretch inside the Plan de Playas, and Playa de los Monteros in Marbella, which is closed to kites 15 June to 15 September. The 2026 beach safety and service plan opened on 1 June.

Car neededNot essential if based near a Cercanias stop (Torremolinos, Malaga city, or the Los Alamos/Guadalmar area itself). More useful for reaching Rincon de la Victoria to the east or other Costa del Sol spots (El Chaparral, Cabopino) further along the coast.
TransfersCercanias line C1 runs Malaga Airport - Malaga city - Torremolinos - Fuengirola every 20 minutes; the airport to Torremolinos is about a 10-minute ride.

What riders say

5 recurring claims

  1. This is a city-session spot first: easy from Malaga, legal/marked in places, useful after work or on a short stay, but not spacious enough to feel like a dedicated kite destination.

    consensus×5 riders

  2. Space is the recurring catch: swimmers, summer beach users, buoys, beach bars and other kiters all matter, and a good day reportedly means around forty kites.

    consensus×5 riders

  3. The wind picture is very local: summer southwest thermal and easterly are the everyday directions, while north to northwest can make flat speed water but is offshore and can be much stronger.

    consensus×3 riders

  4. School feedback around Malaga trends good, with repeated praise for patient instructors and safety, but the value depends on accepting mobile scheduling around the forecast rather than fixed beach time.

    majority×4 riders

  5. Rincon de la Victoria reads more like the calm family/surf-paddle base than the main kite launch; schools describe moving west to Torremolinos when kitesurf or wingfoil is the goal.

Scene & life

VibeTorremolinos is one of Spain's best-known LGBT-friendly resort towns — Toni's Bar, opened in 1962, is considered the first gay bar in Spain, the town co-hosted World Pride in 2017, and its June Pride is now the third largest in the country. The Los Alamos stretch of beach also runs live dance-music events through summer.
