A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. What it holds here is the month's average wind, month by month; it does not count how many days carry a three-hour window at 12 kt.

The spots
Praia de Mira
Praia de Mira is a real kite spot that almost nobody has written about.

The model here carries the month's average wind rather than a count of windy days: it reaches 12.8 kt in March, the strongest month it models for this spot.
Praia de Mira: the long version, the launch and the rules
More on Praia de Mira
The beach is exposed Atlantic sand, central Portugal coast: a beach break with lefts and rights, shore break, wind swell and ground swell over a sandy bottom. Outside the bathing season the sand runs wide and the sea is windy and wavy, and that is when kiting works here. The one figure anywhere for the working range is 16-28 knots on 8-12 m kites, and nothing measured backs it up. The kite evidence is thinner than for Aveiro and it shows. Treat it as intermediate-plus freeride and wave riding rather than a lesson beach. The 2026 bathing season runs 13 June to 13 September, and in that window the swimmers own the sand.
Getting on the water
About a kilometre of urban beachfront backed by dunes and pine, with fine sand, boardwalks and parking behind the dunes. Access is open public beach and no permit is needed. The southern end of the beach is the part pointed to for surf and other water sports. Outside the bathing season the sand runs wide, and that space is the whole reason it works for kites.
If it goes wrong
Lifeguards and first-aid posts cover the Blue Flag bathing area in season. Behind them sit the municipal civil protection service and the Bombeiros Voluntarios de Mira, who train together on water rescue under the 2026 municipal rescue plan; 112 is the number. Out of season, and on the unwatched stretches either side of the town beach, there is nobody on the sand: plan your own self-rescue and a downwind landing.
Rules and access
2026: access is open public beach with no permit and no published kite corridor, and the municipality lists kitesurf among the water sports practised at Praia de Mira. The Blue Flag bathing season runs 13/06/2026 to 13/09/2026, and kiting belongs outside it; in season, follow the posted signage and the lifeguards.
Costa Nova
Costa Nova is the main lagoon kite base on the Ílhavo side of the Ria de Aveiro.

Costa Nova: the long version, the launch and the rules
More on Costa Nova
Two waters share the name and getting that straight matters. On the ria side, Praia da Costa Nova is flat and shallow behind the sandbar, and Riactiva runs its kitesurf lessons and rentals from that margin. On the far side of the same sand sits a west-facing Atlantic wave beach, a different spot entirely. The wind is the regional Nortada out of the north from March to October, filling in through the early afternoon, while the winter south wind is gusty and shifty, and not the reason to come. Tidal channels and sandbanks cut the lagoon, so beginners belong with a school rather than alone on the water. The 2026 bathing season sets lifeguard cover and swimmer zones on the ocean side, and that decides where you rig in summer.
Getting on the water
Sandy ria-side launch at Costa Nova, on the Praia da Costa Nova margin of the lagoon, with the school sitting on it. Launching directly in front of the school is not allowed; the south side is where riders launch, and which entry you use depends on the wind direction and your level. Ocean beach launches sit on the far side of the sandbar and are a different, wave-exposed setup.
If it goes wrong
Lessons run with support boats once students move off the beach and onto the lagoon, and personal accident insurance is compulsory for course bookings. There is no standing public kite rescue at the Costa Nova launch and no lifeguard kite patrol; lifeguard cover on Costa Nova and Barra exists only inside the 2026 bathing season and watches swimmers, not kiters.
Rules and access
2026: the Blue Flag and bathing season for Costa Nova runs 06/06/2026 to 13/09/2026, and Ilhavo lifeguard cover starts later, from 13/06/2026, inside that same season. Launching directly in front of the kite school on the ria margin is not allowed; riders launch from the south side. No kite-specific permit, ban or launch corridor is published beyond that; follow beach signage, lifeguard instructions and any marked swimmer or navigation channels.
Praia da Barra
Praia da Barra is the ocean side of kiting at Aveiro, a few minutes from the Ria de Aveiro lagoon where everyone learns.

Praia da Barra: the long version, the launch and the rules

The inside sections are the gentlest ground around here for a first go at riding waves; walk down the beach and they get serious. It is open Atlantic sand beside the Farol da Barra and the port entrance breakwater, so shore break, swell and the shipping channel are part of the deal. The wind is the same Nortada regime as Costa Nova and the lagoon: northerlies from spring to autumn, and a gusty, shifty south wind in winter that rarely pays off. Water stays cool right through summer, so neoprene all year. Intermediate and advanced riders get a wave and freeride beach out of it; a beginner stays in the lagoon.
Getting on the water
Wide sand ocean beach by the Farol da Barra and the Aveiro port entrance breakwater, a few minutes from the lagoon base.
If it goes wrong
Beach lifeguard cover is documented for the 2026 bathing season. Kite-specific rescue at Praia da Barra is unconfirmed.
Rules and access
2026: the official bathing season and Blue Flag period at Barra run 06/06/2026 to 13/09/2026, and Ilhavo's contracted lifeguard service for the ocean beaches, Barra and Costa Nova, reportedly runs 13/06/2026 through 13/09/2026. Obey the posted beach zoning, the lifeguards and the Capitania do Porto de Aveiro, above all near swimmer areas and the port entrance. The port's safety rules, Regulamento n. 382/2021, define the outer approach to the bar as the box from a quarter of a mile north of the North Mole to a quarter of a mile south of the South Mole and out to one mile west of the North Mole, and ships making the entrance take the leading line inside it; those rules set no distance, corridor or zone for kites or boards, and the Capitania publishes no bathing-season edital covering watersports.

What riders say
5 recurring claims
The useful trick here is switching between flat lagoon water at Costa Nova and open Atlantic water at Barra, sometimes on the same trip.
consensus×5 riders
Costa Nova is repeatedly described as shallow, flat and learner-friendly, but the main crowd is school traffic rather than a big traveling kite scene.
consensus×4 riders
Summer northerlies are the clean pattern; south-wind sessions happen, but riders should expect them to be shiftier and more winter-like.
majority×3 riders
Barra is less brutal than a fully exposed west-coast beach because the breakwater takes some bite out of the swell, but it is still ocean water.
majority×3 riders
Value and convenience depend on staying close to the schools or having transport; the good spots are nearby, not all on one walk-out beach.
