Novigrad (Istria) & Umag

advancedmid-range

1 spot

Umag's Punta launch sits inside a big Adriatic resort belt of tennis stadiums, campsite chains and cycling paths, twenty minutes' drive from Novigrad's quieter Venetian-era old town. This is a comfortable, infrastructure-heavy base for a rider bringing family or wanting real restaurants and a walkable evening, not a dedicated kite-camp scene with a rider crowd of its own.

The conditions in full

Good to know before you go3

  • Novigrad feels like a natural evening pairing with Umag but is a 20-minute drive, not walkable — don't plan it as a spontaneous stroll.
  • The Punta launch area is described as small and rocky/stony rather than a soft sand beginner beach — bring footwear for the walk in.
  • Camping Savudrija, the closest campsite to the spot, lists no on-site kite or windsurf school — arrange lessons and rental separately if you need them.

Conditions

Umag

Umag Punta is the point north of the old town, between Hotel Adriatic and Hotel Sipar where the old Hotel Beograd stood, and it is a southerly-wind spot.
The Yugo/Scirocco is what you come for: it hits Punta harder and more regularly than some spots further south in Istria, and on the good days there are waves by the small red lighthouse off the point.
The summer Maestral is disputed; the spot is described both as a no-thermal launch that only works on the southerly and as somewhere thermal sessions happen, so do not book July for the NW. The NE Bora is not one to ride here, and the season runs March to October.
The water is open Adriatic: chop and small waves, with rocks and reef in it, and the launch is a mini sand beach on a rocky shore with just enough room to rig; some locals step straight off the small mole. Not a beginner spot, not close.
Water is around 25 C in summer and close to 12 C in winter, so a shorty for the warm months and a full suit either side. Whether kiting is tolerated at Punta during the 2026 bathing season, and whether anyone would come and get you, are both unconfirmed, so ask before you plan a week around it.

Getting on the water

Conditions

The launchPunta, north of the old town, between Hotel Adriatic and Hotel Sipar by the former Hotel Beograd, at the westernmost point of the peninsula: a mini sand beach on a rocky shore, with the small red lighthouse offshore. The beach itself is small. Behind it there is parking and rigging room, signed for hotel guests and used by riders anyway. Some skip the sand and step off the small stone mole straight onto the board. The southerly comes in side-shore from the left.
If it goes wrongNothing organised. No lifeguard, patrol boat or paid recovery is documented at Punta. Croatian maritime search and rescue answers on 195, and 112 reaches the same system; no call-out cost is published. Plan your own exit before you launch — the drift runs north along the coast and there are landable points down that way.

Rules & access

Conditions

2026: no kite-specific beach ordinance for Punta is published by the City of Umag. The only public documents covering the beaches are the maritime-property concession approvals, most recently posted for 2015, 2018 and 2019, so the resort stretches either side of the point are run by their concession holders — ask there before rigging.
Charactermixed
Typical12-35 kn is the range quoted for Umag Punta. The summer Maestral in the northern Adriatic runs about 12-15 kn. Sirocco episodes on the Adriatic top out much higher, up to around 54 kn in the worst of them, and one episode can last from half a day to several days. The strong southerly days here are genuinely strong.
Dominant directionRideable directions run ESE through WNW, and the southerly Yugo/Scirocco is the one that counts. Bora from NE and summer Maestral from NW are the regional winds, and neither is recommended for Punta.

Local name
Yugo/Scirocco; Maestral; Bora
Fills inTwo different clocks. The southerly Yugo is synoptic rather than thermal: it can already be blowing at dawn, it holds through the night, and an episode runs from half a day to several days, so you watch a front rather than an hour. The NW Maestral is the opposite, a summer sea breeze that exists only in daylight and fades in the evening.
Kite sizesNo local rider reporting exists. Against the 12-35 kn band quoted for the point, a 75-85 kg rider covers most southerly days on a 9 m, drops to 7 m once it pushes past 25 kn, and needs 12 m or more for a light Maestral afternoon — indicative from the wind range, not measured on this beach.
QualityBest on a southerly Yugo/Scirocco, which is more regular and stronger here than at some spots in southern Istria. Thermal and frontal wind both happen, and so do plenty of light days; do not count on it.
Best monthsMarch · April · May · June · July · August · September · October
SeasonMarch through October is the season quoted for the spot, but the wind it actually works on argues for the other half of the year. The southerly Yugo/Scirocco peaks in March and in November and is an autumn and spring wind; summer belongs to the NW Maestral, a daytime sea breeze this point does not use.Bora is the big regional wind and the wrong one here. July and August are the least likely months for a real session.

WetsuitShorts or shorty in peak summer; full suit in spring/autumn; thick winter suit if riding winter systems.
CurrentsNorthern Adriatic tidal streams are weak, up to about 0.5 kn, with inshore and wind-driven currents on top. At the point the working drift sets north along the coast, and there are landable bailout spots along that stretch.
NotesOpen Adriatic: chop and small waves, clear water, a rocky beach and rocks and reef in the water. On the best Yugo/Scirocco days there are waves by the small red lighthouse off Punta. The family beach at the Punta resort is shallow and easy to walk into, but nobody has confirmed it as the kite launch.Sea temperature averages 25.1 C in summer and 11.6 C in winter; August averages 26.1 C.

Getting there & around

  • Pula Airport (PUY) — the main air hub for Istria, in the south of the peninsula
  • Trieste (Italy) and Ljubljana (Slovenia) airports are also commonly used for this end of Istria, since Umag sits at Croatia's westernmost point close to the Slovenian border
Car neededyes
TransfersNo passenger rail reaches Umag or Novigrad directly — Croatian trains run only as far as Pula/Buzet in this region, and the two northern-Adriatic rail lines from Ljubljana and Rijeka don't connect.Regional buses run the coastal corridor and Trieste-Pazin-Pula routes exist, but a rental car is the practical way to combine the kite spot, the old town and inland day trips on your own schedule.

Practical

LanguageCroatian is official; this was Venetian and then Italian territory for centuries, so Italian is nearly universally understood on the coast and Umag's own town statute mandates Italian bilingual status, preserving Italian place and street names by law. German is also widely spoken, and most restaurants have at least one English speaker on staff.

ExamplesCamping Savudrija standard pitch, 2 adults + electricity: roughly €21/night low season to €40/night high season (2026).
Seasons beyond windThe sea is considered swimmable from May to October. Late July (Croatia Open tennis week) and the May Sea Star Festival are the two crowd-and-price spikes on the calendar; outside those, this end of Istria is noticeably quieter.

What riders say

6 recurring claims

  1. People who live within driving distance mostly skip Umag town itself and launch a few kilometres up the coast at Savudrija or Zambratija.

    consensus×5 riders

  2. The Umag launch only really switches on with jugo, the southerly. In bora or anything northern you get in the car and drive somewhere else.

    consensus×4 riders

  3. In summer what you actually get is a light NW sea breeze, roughly 10-13 knots. That is foil, wing or big-kite territory, not a twin-tip week.

    consensus×4 riders

  4. Kiting is the minority sport on this coast. Most of the people on the water are on a wing or a windsurf sail, and you can easily be the only kite out.

    consensus×3 riders

  5. The days people rate 5 out of 5 here are jugo wave days, and most of them fall outside July and August.

    majority×3 riders

  6. Novigrad's own water is lighter again. The afternoon breeze at Antenal is a foil-and-wing breeze most days, and the beach beside it is a family beach.

Scene & life

VibeResort-town Adriatic rather than a kite community — the social calendar here is built around tennis and a music festival, not a rider scene.
Must try
  • Istrian fuži pasta, often with truffles (truffle season runs from late September)
  • fresh Adriatic fish and seafood, scampi especially
  • Istrian olive oil, regarded highly since Roman times
  • Istrian wines (malvasia, teran) and local grappa
Activities
  • Recreational tennis at Umag's ATP-standard courts (Goran Ivanišević Stadium)
  • Cycling the flat coastal path from Umag to the Savudrija lighthouse
  • Golf Adriatic course
  • Sepomaia Roman villa site and the Umag Town Museum

Pairs withIstria's inland wine-and-truffle towns for rest days, or a longer Istrian coastal loop toward Poreč and Rovinj further south.
Après-kite
  • Marina-front restaurants and bars in Umag
  • Novigrad's harbour restaurant strip, generally the stronger food scene of the two towns

ATP Croatia Open, Umag — clay-court tournament, late July

Sea Star Festival, Umag — music festival held every May since 2017 (the first edition drew roughly 50,000 people)

History & trivia

Scene & life

  • Umag's ATP clay-court tournament, the Croatia Open, has been played annually for decades and is the town's single biggest draw.
  • Novigrad's Italian name Cittanova comes from centuries of Venetian rule; the town was the seat of a Catholic diocese from the early Middle Ages until 1828, and once hosted the 2016 nine-pin bowling Single's World Championship — an oddly specific claim to fame for a town of under 4,000 people.
  • Istria changed hands repeatedly through the 20th century — Austro-Hungarian, then Italian after WWI, then Yugoslav after WWII — and the postwar period saw most of the region's ethnic Italian population leave. Among the emigrant families was the Andrettis, who settled in Pennsylvania; their son Mario Andretti became one of motorsport's most successful drivers.
  • Umag's Podravka tomato-processing plant, tracing back to an early-1900s fish-and-tomato packing works, closed in 2023, ending a local tomato-growing industry that had run for over a century.

Itinerary idea

Base in Umag for kite days and easy tennis/cycling rest days; add one evening in Novigrad for the old town and seafood, and one inland day to Motovun or Grožnjan if the wind sits out.

What we could not settle. Ride here? These are the gaps worth filling.

  • Is 'Novigrad (Istria) & Umag' the name riders actually use for this area?
  • Exact drive times/distances from Pula, Trieste and Ljubljana airports to Umag
  • Bus frequency and reliability on the Novigrad-Umag coastal route, especially off-season
  • Whether any operator actually runs kite lessons or rental at the Umag Punta launch itself
  • Solo-traveller and digital-nomad friendliness — no direct evidence either way
