Good to know before you go2
- Praia da Lanzada enforces designated channels and buoy markers for water sports in summer, and conditions are often unfavorable for kiting during that same bathing season.
- Praia de Lourido's roughly 100 parking spaces near the beach are unmonitored.
The spots

Praia de Lourido: the long version, the launch and the rules
More on Praia de Lourido
The wind is the southwest thermal at around 280 degrees, running from March into late September or early October, and 10-14 m covers it. Water is calmer than the open Atlantic beaches, with shallow zones that suit a first week on a board. The catch is the beach itself: about 700 m long but only about 10 m of average width, so a high tide plus a July afternoon can leave almost nothing to rig on. No official 2026 kite-zone rule and no public rescue arrangement were found. It is a school and freeride beach, nothing more.
Getting on the water
Beach launch on a sheltered half-shell bay of fine white sand on the Poio shore, where the ria narrows toward Pontevedra. It runs about 700 m long but averages only about 10 m wide, so rigging space swings with the tide and the crowd. Unguarded parking with more than 100 spaces sits behind it; the sand can also be reached on foot or by boat.
If it goes wrong
Seasonal beach cover only. The Cabeceira end of the Lourido sands has a lifeguard post, rebuilt together with public toilets in April 2026 for close to 50,000 euro, with space for watch duty, first aid and coordinating an emergency; Cabeceira is one of the municipality's two Blue Flag beaches and is staffed for the bathing season. Outside those months nobody is on the beach, and there is no kite rescue boat. Emergencies go through 112.
Room to rig
limited to moderate; narrow average beach width and tide changes matter
Rules and access
2026: no municipal kite permit, marked corridor or seasonal kite ban is published for Lourido, and the council's own site carries no kitesurf regulation at all. The beach has no kitesurf information sign of the kind posted at A Canteira on A Illa de Arousa. What constrains you in summer is the bathing crowd and the staffed lifeguard post at the Cabeceira end, not a posted zone.
Praia da Lanzada
A Lanzada is a long exposed Atlantic beach on the PO-308 between O Grove and Sanxenxo, and it has nothing in common with the sheltered ria teaching spots at Cesantes and Lourido.

The model here carries the month's average wind rather than a count of windy days: it reaches 15.7 kt in March, the strongest month it models for this spot.
Praia da Lanzada: the long version, the launch and the rules
More on Praia da Lanzada
It works on south, southwest, west and northwest wind with swell, and the best-supported season is autumn and winter, when the synoptic systems arrive and the bathing crowd has gone. A competing seasonal picture puts it at April to October and especially July to September, which conflicts with the local view, so check before you plan a trip around it. Summer access runs through a buoyed nautical channel, and the dunes behind the beach are protected bird habitat. Wind speed is not published for this beach and neither are the tide windows, so read the swell as carefully as the wind. Skip A Lanzada if you are learning, because shorebreak, waves and open-ocean drift are the character of the place. Rescue outside summer lifeguard hours is unconfirmed.
Getting on the water
Launch from the long sandy Atlantic beach, respecting dune protection and summer beach zoning. A regulated nautical access channel and buoyed zone apply in summer.
If it goes wrong
No kite-specific rescue. A Lanzada carries Blue Flag status and a summer lifeguard service as a bathing beach; outside the bathing season nothing is confirmed, which covers most of the months this beach is actually ridden. The emergency number is 112, the coordinating line for a coastal emergency in Galicia.
Room to rig
About 2,500 m of beach with roughly 20 m of average width, so length is never the constraint. What restricts the practical launch is the summer bathing zoning, the buoyed nautical access channel, the protected dunes behind, and how far the tide has come in.
Rules and access
2026: A Lanzada is regulated in summer with a buoyed zone and a marked nautical access channel for entry and exit; no municipal text or map for the current season is published either. The frame above it is national: article 73 of the Reglamento General de Costas (Real Decreto 876/2014) prohibits recreational sailing and any craft moved by sail or motor inside a properly buoyed bathing zone and requires launching and beaching through marked channels, and where a stretch is not buoyed the bathing zone counts as the 200 m of water nearest the shore on a beach, with a three-knot limit inside it. The beach also holds Blue Flag status in season, and the dune system behind it is protected habitat.

What riders say
4 recurring claims
A Lanzada is a real wave option, especially outside summer, but it is not the reliable sunny-season kite bet people may expect from a resort beach.
consensus×4 riders
Summer crowding and restrictions are a real planning issue at A Lanzada; riders should check the current access channel or expect to move to Mexilloeira.
consensus×4 riders
School reputation in the wider Pontevedra kite scene looks decent, but review counts are uneven and the most visible praise is for schools rather than independent riders comparing spots.
majority×4 riders
Lourido is the calmer teaching side of the pair: flat water, thermal wind and low tide come up again and again in beginner-focused descriptions.
