Location and features

Ritoque is a long Pacific beach in Quintero, Valparaiso Region, shared by kiters, windsurfers, surfers and everyone else who uses a beach. The kite area sits around Playa Ritoque and Punta Piedra: a big sandy launch, open-ocean waves, and lagoon sections behind the sand that hold flatter freestyle water when there is enough of it.

Season and wind

The season runs September to March, and August is good too.

S/SW is the working direction in a thermal, cross-onshore setup, though neither the direction nor the local wind name is agreed on for this beach, so read the forecast rather than the label.

Water and hazards

Water peaks at 16-19 C in February and drops to 12-14 C in August, so neoprene is normal all year. This is not a soft beginner beach: the littoral current is strong, the water is officially dangerous for swimming, and there are rocks, a bridge area, rows of surf and an experts-only track by the railway. Driving onto beaches and dunes is prohibited in Chile and has been fined at Quintero/Ritoque.

Getting on the water

In practice you are relying on other riders and on your own self-rescue, so ride within swimming distance of a beach you can actually walk back from.

2024/1998: Chile's Orden Ministerial N°2, national and in force since January 1998, prohibits entry and transit of motor vehicles on beaches and coastal dunes, and the Quintero maritime police fined drivers under it in September 2024 at this stretch of coast. No kite-specific permit, seasonal ban or official Capitania de Puerto/municipal kitesurf zoning has been published.

Environmental status

2026: the dune and lagoon belt behind the beach sits inside the Humedal de Mantagua y Dunas de Ritoque, a 1,911-hectare regional biodiversity priority site in Quintero municipality that has no protection decree of its own and therefore no explicit water-sports ban - treat it as sensitive ground rather than open access, and stay off nesting and wetland margins.

Sharing the beach

The only zoning that exists on the water is informal: a preference map splits the beach between windsurfers and kiters by gentlemen's agreement, and when a kite and a windsurfer cross in opposite directions the kite gives way and goes downwind, because of the 25 m of line behind it.
