San Vito Lo Capo is a beautiful place to ride and a compromised kite spot. The bay sits under Monte Monaco on Sicily's northwest tip: sand under the whole launch, clear water, town directly behind the beach. West-to-north winds are the usable exposure, and winter and spring perturbations can put waves in the bay, which the rest of the time is flatter or choppier than a true wave beach.

Summer closure

In July and August do not bother. The sand fills with swimmers and concessions, enforcement is reportedly strict, and getting a kite up is close to impossible. There is no weather station in the bay, so you drive on a forecast and find out when you arrive.

Plan with fallbacks

Most of the schools that name San Vito are Lo Stagnone operations running it as an excursion, so an independent rider wants a local rule check and a fallback spot for the same afternoon. The compensation is what you do when it goes glassy: Zingaro, Monte Monaco, Scopello, Erice, boat trips and a town that feeds you properly.

Getting on the water

The launchOne long sandy bay beneath Monte Monaco, small and enclosed, with the town on it. In July and August launching is reportedly practically impossible for the crowding.

2025/2026: no kitesurf permit or corridor ordinance specific to San Vito Lo Capo has been published. The 2025 'Mare e Laghi Sicuri' operation of the Trapani Coast Guard explicitly covered San Vito Lo Capo and referenced the beach-safety ordinance, and a 2022 Trapani Coast Guard reminder states that navigation and mooring by pleasure craft, windsurf and kitesurf included, is prohibited inside the bathing zone.

Treat summer kiting as restricted to water with no bathers in it, and read the local signs and check with the Capitaneria before launching.
