Zarautz & Zurriola

External renown — how known this place is in the kite world. Not a quality rating.

Zarautz and Zurriola pair a laid-back Basque surf town with a proper city beach inside San Sebastian's Gros district, on a coast better known for surfing and pintxos than for kiting.
It suits confident intermediate-to-expert wave riders folding a session or two into a wider Basque-coast trip, not beginners or anyone wanting a reliable, flat-water kite holiday — both spots are wave beaches where wind has to line up with swell, and Zurriola in particular is rated expert-only.

The spot cards

Good to know before you go3

  • Zurriola is rated an expert-only kite spot with mole and rock hazards on a small beach — not for learners.
  • Both spots are wave beaches where wind must be strong on top of the swell; kiting here is condition-dependent, not a daily-reliable session.
  • Kitesurfing access may require a permit or local kite-club membership — worth checking locally before rigging.

Zarautz: the long version, the launch and the rules

    More on Zarautz

The swell is steady from NW-W, the waves are small to medium for a kite, and the sand you launch from vanishes at high tide, which is the constraint that decides most sessions. WNW is the wind you want, and it has to blow properly hard. Too far west and the left side of the bay goes gusty. A NE thermal is reported in summer, cross-onshore, but summer is when the beach fills with swimmers and surf schools and there is nowhere to lay out lines. Water is 20-25 C at its peak, about 21 on a summer average and 12-13 in winter, so a shorty or 3/2 mm in peak summer and a proper suit either side of it. Intermediate and expert only: shorebreak, swimmers, concrete near the beach and the tide eating the sand make this a bad place to learn. No kite-specific wind statistics or best months have been published for Zarautz, and no municipal kite rule turned up for 2026 either.

    Getting on the water

Long urban sandy beach launch on the longest beach of the Basque coast, close to 3 km of sand over a sand bottom, with practical space strongly affected by tide and summer beach users.

    If it goes wrong

A lifeguard service runs through the Gipuzkoa beach season. Kite-specific rescue is unconfirmed.

    Room to rig

large at lower tides, tidal/narrow at high tide, limited in crowded summer periods

    Rules and access

2026: no municipal kite ordinance for Playa de Zarautz is published, and the town hall site is down. In its absence the general Spanish beach rules stand: a 200 m bathing zone off the shoreline, and where a buoyed access channel is laid you use it to get in and out.

  2. Zurriola

    ocean

Zurriola is the open surf beach in the Gros district of Donostia / San Sebastian, between the Urumea river mouth and Monte Ulia.

    advanced

In seasonno month named for this spot

The model here carries the month's average wind rather than a count of windy days: it reaches 12.6 kt in March, the strongest month it models for this spot.

Zurriola: the long version, the launch and the rules

    More on Zurriola

It kites when a low goes through: strong onshore NW or NNW, or a cross-on westerly, the wind that empties the peaks at Monpas and in the centre of the beach. Monthly wind averages bottom out at 5 knots from June to September and reach 8 from December through February, and the 12-knot-plus days cluster from late autumn through spring. Expert riders only. The sand is small and how much of it you get depends on the bathers, the surf crowd, the shorebreak and the mole, with rocks in the mix. Water is 13-18 C, near 18 C in summer and 13 C in winter, so a wetsuit every session and a shorty at best. Donostia's beach season runs 1 June to 30 September with lifeguard cover, and the 2026 ordinance for that season bans smoking and the use of sound devices without headphones but does not mention kitesurfing, so the zoning on the sand and the lifeguard instructions are what you follow. No reliable kite-size range has been published for the beach, and it is unconfirmed whether NE counts as cross-onshore.

    Getting on the water

Urban sandy launch on the Gros beach between the Urumea mouth and Monte Ulia; the practical launch depends on space between bathers, surfers, shorebreak, and the mole.

    If it goes wrong

Lifeguard and beach security cover runs through the official season, 1 June to 30 September. Outside those dates there is nobody on the sand. No kite-specific rescue has been confirmed at any time of year.

    Room to rig

    small and crowd dependent

    Rules and access

2026: Donostia's official beach season at Zurriola runs 1 June to 30 September with lifeguard cover. The 2026 beach ordinance for that season bans smoking and the use of sound devices without headphones, and does not address kitesurfing, so no official kite-specific rule exists and the advice to check the local rules on the beach still stands.

Getting there & around

  • San Sebastian Airport (EAS), about 20km from the city
  • Bilbao Airport (BIO), about 100km away
  • Biarritz Airport, France, about 50km away
Car neededNot for the Zarautz-San Sebastian corridor itself — the train/bus link is frequent — but useful for reaching other Basque coast spots outside this pair.
TransfersThe i2 bus links San Sebastian's Plaza Gipuzkoa to the airport roughly hourly (about 30 min, city-bus fare). Zarautz and San Sebastian are connected directly by Euskotren regional trains about every 30 minutes (roughly 30 min ride) and by hourly buses; Bilbao to San Sebastian is about 1 hour by bus.

What riders say

5 recurring claims

  1. There is no visible kite infrastructure. Riders searching for rental or lessons around San Sebastian find surf shops everywhere and nothing for kiting, and the answers they get point them over the border into France.

    majority×2 riders

  2. Wind is the limiting factor, not swell. Riders report light, side-onshore conditions where a 9 m was not enough, and someone who grew up here says the summer is simply not windy.

    majority×2 riders

  3. The postcard bay beaches, La Concha and Ondarreta, are too sheltered to be worth rigging. If you try anywhere in the city it is the Gros side, which is the surf beach.

    majority×2 riders

  4. These are crowded surf beaches first. Zurriola is rated as frequently busy, and the water hazard logged at Zarautz is swimmers, peaking May through August.

    majority×2 riders

  5. Zarautz is the one people keep suggesting you actually try, on the strength of its history with windsurfers rather than any kite scene.

History & trivia

Scene & life

  • Zarautz was founded in 1237, when Fernando III of Castile confirmed its Navarrese charters, and later became a genteel resort town visited by Jackie Kennedy and Marlene Dietrich.
  • Zarautz's 2.8km beach is the longest in the Basque Country and a regular World Surf League Qualifying Series stop.
  • Zurriola beach sits in San Sebastian's Gros district, between the Urumea river mouth and Monte Ulia.

Itinerary idea

Base in Zarautz or Gros, ride whichever spot lines up wind with swell, and fill flat days with a pintxos crawl in San Sebastian's Old Town plus a day trip to Getaria or Bilbao.

FAQ

Is Zarautz or Zurriola suitable for beginners?

No. Zarautz is a wave spot with a long sandy beach break rated intermediate to expert, with swimmers in the water adding hazard, and Zurriola in San Sebastian is similarly surf-oriented rather than a flat-water learning spot.

What are the wave and wind conditions like?

Both spots pick up consistent NW-W Atlantic swell: Zarautz produces small-to-medium waves, while Zurriola in Donostia/San Sebastian's Gros district is known for quality peaks at Monpas and the central beach break.

Are there schools nearby?

Zurriola has surf schools and summer lifeguards, though these serve the surf beach generally rather than being dedicated kite schools.

  • Is 'Zarautz & Zurriola' the name riders actually use for this area?
