Kitesurfing in Yucatán
3 spots · 1 destination · 8 schools
Three spots on the Gulf-facing north coast, and they are not the same trip.
Progreso's Playon sits west of the town pier, 30 km from Merida, shallow enough to stand 100 m out, with the NE thermal in by early afternoon. El Cuyo repays the three hours from Cancun: a fishing village at the edge of the Ria Lagartos reserve, a kite zone east of the village, 18-23 knots March to June, and about fifteen kites on a busy day. Rio Lagartos is the other extreme, reserve coastline reached by boat with the fishermen, and kitesurfing is not on the reserve's list of permitted activities.
Yucatán holds 3 kitesurf spots in our atlas, grouped into 1 destination. Riding here is mostly flat water. The season runs February to June. Every spot suits beginners. 8 schools operate in the region.
