thermal sea breeze and Norte

10:00 · 12:00 · 14:00 · 15:00 · 17:00

A midday-to-afternoon spot. The thermal can start to switch on from about 10:00 and is normally in by 12:00-14:00, then holds to sunset; an indicative daily curve puts the strongest hours around 15:00-17:00. Mornings are light unless a Norte is already blowing, in which case it can be on at any hour.

The marks are the clock times the record names, laid on a 24-hour day. The bar between the first and the last covers those hours; it is not a promise of wind.

Progreso is the workable kite beach on the north coast of Yucatán, about 30 km north of Merida, and the zone riders use is Playon, the wide sand downwind of the long Progreso pier where the local schools set up.
The water is shallow and sandy, flat in places, chopped up with a small shorebreak and the odd small wave when the north wind leans on it. Two winds run the place: the NE thermal sea breeze that fills in through the afternoon, and the Norte fronts that push through in winter.
The window every account agrees on is February to June. On a normal side-onshore thermal day this is an easy place to learn, with schools, food and a bed five minutes away; on a strong Norte, a storm outflow or a side-offshore SE, it is not.
Progreso is a working port, so keep your distance from the pier and the ship traffic. Nobody has published municipal beach rules for the kite zone, so ask at a school where the boundaries sit.

Progreso is windy for much of the year. The core is February to June. NE thermal sea breeze runs from late winter into July, and cold-front Nortes come through from roughly November to February or March.
September is the weak month. Red tide and summer storms can also cost you sessions.

For 75-85 kg, 9, 10 and 12 m cover the ordinary 15-25 knot thermal and Norte days, and the 12 m is the one that comes out most. Add a 7-8 m for the hard front days and a 13 m if you want the light early-afternoon slots. Schools stop riding above about 30 knots.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from the operational forecast archive at 1.5–7 km (2023-2024), daylight hours only, not a ground station: it resolves thermal, lake and valley winds far better than coarse reanalysis but still tends to understate a strong local thermal. A windy day has at least three consecutive daylight hours at 12 knots or more. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

The water

Type

shallow sandy Gulf beach with flat water, chop, small shorebreak and occasional small waves

Standing depth

Sand bottom, no reef and no rock. You can stand roughly 100 m out at the Playon school zone, about waist deep, and the water at the main launch sits under a metre. Sandbars keep it shallow in patches farther out before it drops away.

Tides

Minor: Progreso is close to microtidal, with a typical tidal range of roughly 0.4-0.7 m between high and low water.

Temperature

28°C summer · 24°C winter

Wetsuit

usually no wetsuit; a shorty or top can be useful on cooler Norte days

Currents

No significant current is reported along the Progreso beaches.

25–32°C water
Sandy and gently shelving. From roughly November to March a Norte stirs the bottom and the water turns brown, and the stronger north winds add chop and a bit more wave.

Your level

beginnerintermediateadvanced
The shallow sandy Playon and wide beach support lessons and progression. Strong Norte days, gusty storm outflows, and side-offshore morning winds are not beginner conditions.

Rescue

The schools on the Playon are the practical rescue. At least one runs a support boat for lessons and downwinders when the wind has any offshore in it, and operators call sessions off above about 30 knots or with lightning around. Nothing public was found: no lifeguard service and no general kite rescue for an independent rider.
One of the schools keeps beach hours of 12:00-19:00, seven days.

Launch

Wide, long sandy launch at the main kite beach downwind/west of Progreso pier, with additional riding reported upwind of the pier.

Space

wide open sandy beach with plenty of launch and landing space, though shells occur in places

Hazards riders report 8

  • shipping/port traffic near the pier
  • shallow sandbars far offshore
  • strong Nortes can create gusty, onshore conditions and bigger chop
  • SE/SW wind can be side-offshore from the north-facing beach
  • summer cumulonimbus/turbonada storm outflows can be very gusty and then shut off
  • heat and humidity from May to July
  • red tide can reduce conditions in some periods
  • working port and long pier require separation from port traffic and structures
Rules & access

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

    Rider tips

    • Set up at Playon, west and downwind of the pier: that is where the schools are and where the launch space is.
    • Ask locally before riding an SE or SW. On this north-facing beach it comes off the land.
    • Book a room with air conditioning from May to July. The heat and the humidity are the problem, not the wind.
    • Watch the sky inland in summer. Turbonada outflows arrive fast, blow hard, then shut off.
    • Give the pier and the port traffic a wide berth, and expect shells in the sand where you land.
