The main riding beach runs roughly north-south, and a northerly blows parallel to it - side-shore, which is why it is the direction schools prefer for teaching.
NE and NW are the other two working directions.
S and SW are gusty and are the ones to leave alone, and anything outside that N-NE-NW arc risks pushing you away from the beach.
