When it fills in

Mornings are flat and pond-like. What wind there is builds through the afternoon off the bay and eases again by evening, and the afternoon is the only slot the windsurfers on this beach bother with.

Calis Beach is a long sand strip north of Fethiye town, backed by a promenade of hotels and cafes, and it is a package-holiday beach before it is a kite spot.
The wind is not absent, it is thin: averages of 4-8 knots and roughly 19 days a year that clear even a minimum rideable threshold, about 3-4 of them a month between January and March. June to August, when the beach is full, is close to windless.
Fethiye Surf Center teaches kitesurfing here anyway and uses the light stuff for beginner lessons; it has been running over 20 years and is reportedly Turkey's first kite school. When Calis is dead the same school moves people to Gokova or Karadere/Patara, and out of season to Egypt or Boracay.
Nothing published covers the shoreline in kite terms, no depth, no hazards past the crowding, and a vague warning about needing a permit or club membership is unconfirmed. Summer water is around 28-29 C and winter near 11 C. Come here to learn in January or February, not to ride.

About 19 days a year clear even a minimum rideable threshold (Beaufort 4, roughly 12kt), and they cluster from January to March at 3-4 days a month. June-August, the busy tourist season, has close to none. The wind is weak and inconsistent, and what there is falls in winter.

The quiver, in words

No local size table. On averages of 4-8 knots and roughly 19 days a year clearing a rideable threshold, this is big-kite water: indicative for a 75-85 kg rider, a 15-17 m or a light-wind foil setup on the days that work at all.

Direction to shore

The beach fronts Fethiye Bay with the open water to its west and south-west. The breeze that matters is the afternoon one coming in off the bay, so onshore to side-onshore; the mornings are glass. No compass wind rose is published for the beach itself.

The model is wrong here

The model reads 3% of days at its best month, which does not sit with the season this record states. The figures are kept and drawn as hatching so no wind colour can be read off them, and the ringed months are the ones riders name.

riders' months

Riders and schools name these months. The model reads lower here, and both are shown rather than averaged.

Modelled from the operational forecast archive at 1.5–7 km (2023-2024), daylight hours only, not a ground station: it resolves thermal, lake and valley winds far better than coarse reanalysis but still tends to understate a strong local thermal. A windy day has at least three consecutive daylight hours at 12 knots or more. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Standing depth

A long flat beach of darker sand and shingle with the shallow water carrying well out, shallow enough that people wade rather than swim. No measured wading distance is published, and the shingle is why the local advice is to bring water shoes.

Tides

Aegean/Mediterranean coast - minimal tidal range as a general regional characteristic, not independently measured for this beach

Winter ~11

Sheltered, gulf-facing sea beach on Fethiye Bay; a long sandy resort strip fronting a hotel/cafe promenade rather than an open-coast break.

The scene

What riders come here for

beginner lessons in light wind
A package-holiday beach with a promenade of hotels and restaurants. The crowd is tourists rather than kiters, and it peaks across the June to August window, exactly when the wind is weakest.

Rescue

Lifeguard cover on this municipal beach is seasonal and not guaranteed, and no kite rescue boat is advertised. The two watersports centres on the beach cover their own students during lessons and nothing beyond that. For an emergency in Turkey, 112 reaches all services.

Launch

A 4 km municipal beach on the north-west edge of Fethiye, fronted by a tiled promenade of hotels and cafes with shops behind. Darker sand and shingle underfoot rather than clean sand. There is no dedicated kite launch; the watersports centres sit at the Koca Calis end, by Sat Burnu.

Hazards riders report 8

  • Wind is often very light or unreliable - check the forecast closely before planning a trip
  • Busy tourist beach in summer
  • The summer crowds and the summer calm arrive together, June to August.
  • A special permit or membership of a local kite organisation is mentioned in generic guidance; unconfirmed for Calis specifically and it reads like boilerplate.
  • Shingle and pebble underfoot; bring water shoes
  • Lifeguard cover is seasonal and not guaranteed
  • Swimmers, SUPs and parascending boats share the water through the season
  • Afternoon chop once the breeze is in, and the water goes murky as the shingle churns

Rider tips

  • Aim for January to March. That is where the rideable days are, about 3-4 a month.
  • Book through Fethiye Surf Center rather than turning up with your own gear; there is no kite scene to join here.
  • Skip June to August unless you came for the beach; that is when the sand is full and the wind is weakest.
  • Ask about the trips to Gokova or Karadere/Patara before you pay, because that is where the wind is.
  • Check on arrival whether a permit or local club membership is being asked for.
  • Ride the afternoon. The bay is glass all morning and the breeze does not fill until after lunch.
  • The watersports centres are down at the Koca Calis end by Sat Burnu, not on the main promenade.
  • Water shoes, not bare feet: the shoreline is shingle as much as sand.

No-wind days

When Calis is not working, Fethiye Surf Center runs kite trips to Gokova and Karadere/Patara inside Turkey, and seasonally to Egypt and Boracay in the Philippines.

FAQ

Is Calis Beach suitable for beginners?

It suits gentle lessons only; a local school uses the light conditions mainly for beginner instruction rather than powered freeriding.

What is the wind like?

Wind is weak and unreliable, averaging around 4-8 knots, with station data showing only about 19 rideable days a year.

When is the best time to visit?

No clear best season is documented; station data shows only marginally more windy days in February-March than in summer, so conditions should be checked case by case.
