Bora

12:00 · 15:00 · 18:00

Bora can blow day and night, usually strongest from dusk to dawn and weakest around 12:00-15:00. The spot statistics point the other way and give 12:00-18:00 as the window with the most wind days. No Punat-specific thermal onset has been published, so this is a forecast decision rather than a clock decision.

The marks are the clock times the record names, laid on a 24-hour day. The bar between the first and the last covers those hours; it is not a promise of wind.

Punat is the flat-water option on Krk: an enclosed lagoon, Puntarska Draga, on the southwest side of the island between Krk town and Punat, with the marina at one end.
When it works it is Bora, NE to E-NE, cross-on from the left at the lagoon entries and given a few extra knots by the hills; sessions start from about 12 kt, and a strong Bora turns gusty near the marina and village, with downdrafts.
It does not work often: the monthly averages sit around 4-7 kt and one dataset scores the place at 9.2% reliability, so this is a forecast-and-drive spot rather than a destination, and June-September is the best of it. Bora is usually strongest from dusk to dawn and weakest around 12:00-15:00, the opposite of a thermal spot's rhythm.
Jugo/Scirocco from the south-east can work on the Punat coast too, mainly on the more exposed Punta Debij side, and that is a wavier windsurf-style entry rather than the lagoon. The water is clear and shallow for the first 10 m off the entries; how far out you can stand is unconfirmed.
Launches are small pebble beaches: several between the wakeboard facility and the dive centre, with a free car park opposite the dive centre as of 2020, and a grassy access through the Krk Golf Club gate about 600 m before the water-ski facility where the owner charged 5 EUR/day in 2020. Bring your own gear (no rental or shop on the island), booties for the urchins, and keep clear of the marina traffic.

fills in: Bora can blow day and night, usually strongest from dusk to dawn and weakest around 12:00-15:00. Typical strength

Often light. NE/Bura sessions start from about 12 kt; a strong Bora gets very gusty.

Low-reliability flat water: protected and good when the Bora reaches the lagoon, gusty near the marina and village, too light on most days.
June-September are the months usually named as best, and they are also the months with the least wind: summer runs at 0-5% of days with usable wind against 23% in January and 17% in November, and other statistics put the strongest wind in March-May instead. About 101 days a year carry wind at all.
The wind that counts is Bora off the Croatian mountain hinterland; the hills around Punat and Baska strengthen a good Bora by a Force or two, but it is gusty and blows hardest outside settled beach weather. Jugo/Scirocco from the south-east can work on the Punat coast, mainly at Punta Debij, where it makes small waves.

Also on record

Monthly averages of roughly 4-7 kt, thermals not counted; one dataset gives 6.6 kt average and 9.2% reliability.

The quiver, in words

Indicative only, with no local size table found: sessions start around 12 kt, so a 75-85 kg rider spends most Punat days on a big kite, 12-15 m, and only reaches for 7-9 m when a real Bora arrives. Bora is gusty enough that you rig for the gusts rather than the lulls, especially on the marina side.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from the operational forecast archive at 1.5–7 km (2023-2024), daylight hours only, not a ground station: it resolves thermal, lake and valley winds far better than coarse reanalysis but still tends to understate a strong local thermal. A windy day has at least three consecutive daylight hours at 12 knots or more. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

The water

Type

flat

Standing depth

Shallow for the first 10 m off the main Punat Lagoon entries; how far the standing area extends is unconfirmed.

Tides

Tide independent; Adriatic tides do not matter for Krk spots.

Temperature

24.1°C summer · 11.2°C winter

Wetsuit

Boardshorts or shorty in high summer; full suit/possibly thicker neoprene in winter. Neoprene shoes recommended because Krk beaches are rocky and sea urchins can occur.

13–26°C water
The enclosed Puntarska Draga/Punat Lagoon is mostly flat with small chop in Bora. Jugo/Scirocco can put waves on the more exposed Punta Debij side, but that is a separate Punat-area windsurf entry, not the sheltered lagoon launch. The water is clear.

Your level

beginnerintermediateadvanced
Listed for any level, and the flat sheltered bay does suit beginners and windfoil. The catch: launches are small and pebbly and Punat has no school and no rescue, so a true beginner should ride with someone local rather than self-launch.

The scene

What riders come here for

flat waterfreeridefreestyle practicewindfoilwindsurfing
Less documented and less crowded than Baska, but Punat is a resort/marina bay with family beaches and boating; summer beach pressure can make small launches sensitive.

Rescue

No lifeguard, no kite school and no boat cover for kiters at Punat Lagoon as of 2026. The town's organised watersports run to sailing school, two diving centres, cable ski, SUP and boat rental, and none of that would recover a kiter downwind.
The bay is enclosed, which helps, but it is busy with marina and charter traffic, which does not. Ride with someone, and carry a phone you can reach from the water.

Launch

Several entries to Punat Lagoon between the wakeboard facility and the Krk diving centre, pebble beach access, and a large free car park opposite the diving centre as of 2020. A second access runs through the Krk Golf Club road/gate roughly 600 m before the water-ski facility: open grass and wind-sheltered rigging niches, 5 EUR/day charged by the owner as of 2020, and the gate must be closed behind you. Every launch is small and stony.

Hazards riders report 9

  • Marina/boat traffic in the bay
  • Bura wind can be strong and gusty in this region outside summer
  • Small pebble/stone launch areas
  • Rocks and reefs in the water
  • Wave breaker
  • Ships and marina/boat traffic in Punat bay
  • Strong gusts and downdrafts in Bora, especially closer to the marina and village
  • Rocky Croatian shorelines and possible sea urchins; neoprene shoes recommended
  • Residential and tourist beach surroundings require careful navigation around bystanders and swimmers
Rules & access
No kite-specific permit, zoning or seasonal restriction at Punat as of 2026. The county maritime-domain order covering Punat (checked 2026) does not mention kitesurfing or kajtsurfing at all; it bans jet-skis within 300 m of shore and keeps beaches and the maritime domain in general public use, with commercial use needing a concession or permit. Ask locally before riding.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Treat Punat as a forecast day trip, not a destination; the averages are 4-7 kt and reliability is 9.2%.
  • Expect gusts and downdrafts on the marina and village side of the lagoon; stay toward the open side in Bora.
  • Bring booties: pebbles, rocks and sea urchins.
  • Ask at the golf-club gate before driving in; the 5 EUR/day charge dates from 2020 and may have changed.
  • Novices: do not self-launch. There is no school and no rescue here; get a local rider to show you the swimmer-free zone that day.
  • Bora blows hardest dusk to dawn and softest 12:00-15:00; plan a morning or evening session.
  • Ask at the golf-club gate before driving in; the 5 EUR/day charge dates from 2020 and may have changed. Close the gate behind you either way.
  • Nobody is coming to get you. No lifeguard, no school, no boat: ride with a partner and keep a phone in a waterproof pouch.

FAQ

When is the best time to kitesurf at Punat?

June to September are the best months, with the Bora blowing from the Croatian mountain hinterland as the main wind phase, sometimes reinforced a few knots by the surrounding hills.

Is Punat suitable for beginners?

The sheltered, flat lagoon is often described as suitable for beginners, but launch areas are small and pebbly and no local school or rescue arrangement was confirmed, so true beginners should ride with local supervision rather than self-launch.

What is the wind like at Punat?

The main wind is Bora from NE to E-NE, which is gusty and can be unreliable; Jugo/Scirocco from the south-east also affects the coast, especially on the more exposed Punta Debij side.

Where can you launch at Punat?

Entries sit between the wakeboard facility and the Krk diving centre, and via a Krk Golf Club access road with grassy rigging areas about 600 m before the water-ski facility.

Are there rules or fees for launching?

No kite-specific permit or zoning was found for 2026; one lagoon access point via the golf-club gate charged a day fee as of 2020, and riders should confirm current terms locally.
