Navia

also known as Playa de Navia

advanced onlyhigh crowds

Navia has no other spot on this map within 40 km of it. straight-line distance

Navia is a river-mouth beach in western Asturias, ridden on kite and wingfoil, and it only works on N and NE. NE is the one you want, cross-onshore, with waves breaking on sandbars out in the bay and flatter, choppy water inside.
Playa de Navia is 330 m of dark sand under pine and eucalyptus, semi-urban, with parking and services in season. La Poza, the pool beside it, is tide-driven, and the estuary gives a flat-water option at high tide. The river mouth means current and there are rocks, so treat both seriously even when the inside looks harmless.
No average wind range, best-month range or kite-size range has been published for it, and Asturias kiting lines up only on some days because of how the beaches face. Winter, January above all, is the best surf season here. Come on a good NE forecast for a quiet wave session and do not book a week around it.

Typical strength

No measurement exists for the beach itself. The nearest coastal station on this stretch runs about 9 kt as an annual mean with WNW dominant, and WNW does nothing here, so the N and NE days that work are a thin slice of the year. Read that figure as regional, not local.

Condition-dependent and sometimes gusty; the bay is protected, and only N and NE work.
No kite-specific best-month range is published. Winter, January above all, is the best surf season, and Asturias kiting works only on some days because of how the beaches face and where the wind comes from.

Direction to shore

N comes in straight onshore and NE cross-onshore, and NE is the one you want. S blows offshore and cleans the waves up, with some shelter from SW behind the land.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from weather reanalysis on a 10–25 km grid (2022-2024), not a ground station: reliable for trade and synoptic winds, understates thermal sea breezes and valley winds. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

The water

Type

ocean beach and estuary mouth

Standing depth

Shallow water is reported before the outer waves, but the extent of standing depth is unconfirmed.

Tides

The river-mouth beach is not strongly tide-gated for a kite session, though the waves work best around low. La Poza, the pool beside the beach, fills and drains with the tide, and the estuary gives flat water at high water.

Temperature

Summer About 19-21 in July-September regionally; 19.6 C recorded on 27 Aug 2026.

Winter about 12 regionally in November-February; Asturias water reportedly never gets really warm, 13-18

Wetsuit

summer wetsuit or shorty in peak summer; 4/3 mm with hood, boots and gloves in winter

Currents

River-mouth and rip-current risk.

Rated intermediate in one place and intermediate to expert in another. Estuary current, gusty wind, rocks and sandbar waves rule it out as a beginner kite spot.

Rules & access
2026: no municipal kitesurf ordinance for Playa de Navia was found. The national rule applies instead — recreational sailing and boards are banned inside a buoyed bathing zone, and where no buoys are set the bathing zone is the 200 m strip off a beach; entry and exit go through the marked channel at 3 knots. Through the summer bathing season Asturian beaches hold a reserved swimmers' area and kiting stays outside it. Dogs are barred from 22 June to 11 September. The town also closes the beach to bathing when Portuguese man o' war turn up, as it did in August 2025.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Ride it on N or NE only; the bay is protected and nothing else gets in.
  • Check the tide before counting on the estuary flat water or on La Poza.
  • Bring 4/3 mm with hood, boots and gloves outside peak summer, when the water sits around 12.
  • Give the rocks and the river-mouth current a wide margin, even when the inside water looks flat.
  • Expect lifeguard cover only from 20 June to 11 September, and none of it kite-specific.
  • Waves here are best near low tide; S wind is the offshore that cleans them up, and it is the wrong wind for a kite.
  • In August, check the town's notices before you drive out: man o' war closures happen.
