Nortada

15:00 · 19:00

Mornings are the light part of the day. The Nortada builds from late morning, is at its strongest between 15:00 and 19:00, and can hold into the evening rather than dying at sunset. Modelled diurnal pattern rather than a beach log.

The marks are the clock times the record names, laid on a 24-hour day. The bar between the first and the last covers those hours; it is not a promise of wind.

First, the name: this is Cabedelo at Figueira da Foz, on the Mondego mouth, not the better-known Cabedelo at Viana do Castelo. It is a wide sand beach reached by wooden walkways over protected dunes, shared with surfers and bodyboarders, plus whoever is fishing that day. As a kite spot it is conditional rather than dependable.
Cross-offshore Nortada can build something serious here, but the beach gets none of the thermal boost that Viana or Guincho enjoy, and older observations from a station near Figueira da Foz average 6 kts on a NNO-dominant direction.
The local kite center, CKFF, does not put its sessions on the main Cabedelo peak at all; it moves to Praia Sul da Cova or Praia Sul Costa de Lavos depending on sea and wind, which tells you a lot about the main beach. Cross-off wind over a river mouth deserves respect.
Experienced wave and freeride riders will get a session out of the right day, and everyone else should follow the school to whichever beach it picked.

fills in: Mornings are the light part of the day. The Nortada builds from late morning, is at its strongest between 15:00 and 19:00, and can hold into the evening rather than dying at sunset. Modelled diurnal pattern rather than a beach log.

Typical strength

Nortada afternoons commonly run 11-16 knots from May through August, with 18 knots and over on roughly one afternoon in twenty. Mornings are usually too light to ride. Winter fronts push harder but come without the pattern. Indicative, from modelled coastal data rather than a beach anemometer.

An older station near Figueira da Foz averages NNO and 6 kts, which is a weak proxy for the beach itself. Cabedelo gets none of the thermal boost of Viana or Guincho, and the standout kite and windsurf wave days come only a few times a year.
The local kite centre opens March to October and moves its sessions between Praia Sul da Cova and Praia Sul Costa de Lavos depending on sea and wind. On modelled coastal data the Nortada is at its most useful from May to August, May being the best of them, while September and November are the thinnest afternoons of the year.
December to March brings the stronger but far less predictable frontal days. No best-month list is published for Cabedelo itself.

The quiver, in words

For a 75-85 kg rider a 12 m is the everyday Nortada kite here, with a 9-10 m for the afternoons that push past 18 knots and a 14 m if you want to ride the soft edges of the day. Indicative, worked from the wind range rather than from rider reports here.

Direction to shore

NW runs cross-offshore to sideshore at Cabedelo and Cova depending on the exact launch, which matches the cross-offshore Nortada description used for the spot.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from the operational forecast archive at 1.5–7 km (2023-2024), daylight hours only, not a ground station: it resolves thermal, lake and valley winds far better than coarse reanalysis but still tends to understate a strong local thermal. A windy day has at least three consecutive daylight hours at 12 knots or more. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Kitesurfing here is confirmed, but the exposed wave and river-mouth setting plus the cross-off Nortada make the main Cabedelo setup a place for independent intermediate and advanced riders.

Rules & access
2026: Cabedelo is a Blue Flag beach and dune access runs on wooden walkways that keep the dunes intact. No official kitesurf zoning is published.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Ask CKFF or a local rider whether the day is at Cabedelo, Cova or Costa de Lavos before you unpack.
  • Launch behind the small breakwater at Praia da Cova rather than at the main Cabedelo surf peak.
  • Respect the cross-off Nortada and the river mouth; do not go out without a self-rescue plan.
  • Cross the dunes on the wooden walkways, never through the vegetation.

FAQ

What is the wind like at this Cabedelo?

Nearby Figueira da Foz station data shows an NNW-average direction and about 6 knots average wind, and the spot lacks the thermal boost seen at Viana do Castelo or Guincho.

Is it suitable for beginners?

No, the exposed wave and river-mouth setting make it better suited to independent intermediate and advanced riders.

Are there kite schools nearby?

CKFF, a local kite center in Figueira da Foz, is open March to October and places its teaching zones at Praia Sul da Cova or Costa de Lavos rather than the main Cabedelo beach.

What hazards should riders know about?

Expect Atlantic waves, river-mouth currents and cross-offshore wind risk.
