Tabuhan Island / Banyuwangi has no other spot on this map within 40 km of it. straight-line distance

Pulau Tabuhan is a small uninhabited island in the Bali Strait off Bangsring, Banyuwangi, and one of Indonesia's better-documented remote flat-water kite spots. White sand, clear water, and wind that is unusually consistent for Southeast Asia: the southeast trades get funnelled through the narrow Java-Bali strait, commonly quoted around 20-25 kt, sometimes 20-30 kt in older figures.
The wind window is May to October, sometimes stretched into November, sometimes narrowed to May-September. The water is flat or choppy rather than wave-based, which is freeride and freestyle territory.
What makes the place advanced is the logistics rather than the riding: every session depends on boat transport and local support, and no reliable on-island school, rescue, tide table or current guide was found. Sort that out with a Banyuwangi boat operator before you arrive, not on the beach at Bangsring.

Typical strength

Strong and constant through the dry-season wind window. The strait between Java and Bali funnels the southeast trade wind, which is where the consistency comes from.
Near-constant wind up to 25 kt from May into November, with May-October also given as the best months. A narrower version of the dry season, May-September with up to 20 kt, circulates alongside it.

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from weather reanalysis on a 10–25 km grid (2022-2024), not a ground station: reliable for trade and synoptic winds, understates thermal sea breezes and valley winds. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Wetsuit

Boardshorts or a rash vest. The Banyuwangi side of the Bali Strait is warm year-round, around 26-27 C in August and around 28-29 C through the wet season under the northwest monsoon.

Currents

Bali Strait current is complex and moves with the monsoon and the tide. No current pattern specific to kiting at Tabuhan is published.

28–30°C water
Tabuhan is wave-free, flat to choppy, with white sand and clear water over reefs that snorkelers and divers use. It is an open island rather than a protected mainland lagoon, so boat logistics and local knowledge of current and tide still matter.

Your level

beginnerintermediateadvanced
Listed as suitable for any level, and the flat-to-choppy water does carry freeride and progression. A beginner still needs the boat organized and someone teaching, because the island is uninhabited, reached by boat, and no dedicated on-island rescue is on record.

A remote island day-trip scene of snorkelers, divers and the occasional wind and kite group. Uncrowded for kiting next to Bali, though boat-tour traffic turns up at weekends, on holidays and through the dry-season visitor months.

Rules & access
2026: no particular kite rules are known, so talk to someone local before you ride. Entry, boat and tour fees apply to reach Tabuhan from Bangsring, and no kite-specific permit or official riding-zone rule is known.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Book through Bangsring Breeze, which organizes the boat crossing and the kiteboarding and windsurfing sessions.
  • Fix the boat, your beach time and the pickup before you leave Bangsring; a normal snorkel-tour schedule does not fit a kite session.
  • Ask straight out if the operator covers kite rescue or only passenger transport.
  • Carry water, shade, sun protection, repair basics and a phone in a dry bag, because fixed facilities on the island are limited or unconfirmed.
  • Give the snorkelers, dive boats and reef a wide berth; that reef is why the other boats are there, so a mask earns its space in the bag.
  • Cross-check the forecast for Tabuhan Island against a live local report from Bangsring before you commit to the boat ride.

Getting there

Airport

Banyuwangi International Airport / Blimbingsari (BWX); Bali's Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS) is an alternative via road/ferry or onward travel

Route

Fly or travel overland to Banyuwangi, then continue by taxi or private car to Bangsring Beach or the Grand Watu Dodol and Bangsring-area operators, then take a local boat to Pulau Tabuhan. A taxi to Kampe/Bangsring Beach with a boat onward works, as do the local tourist boats out of Bangsring.

Transfer

About 40 minutes from Banyuwangi Airport to Bangsring Breeze plus roughly 20-30 minutes by boat to Tabuhan; from Banyuwangi town, about 20 minutes by road to Bangsring and under 25 minutes by boat.
