On the clock

14:00 · 15:00

No daily clock to plan around. The wind arrives with the weather system and blows at night as readily as at noon; modelled hourly data give only a small afternoon lift, about 7 kt around dawn against 8.8 kt at 14:00-15:00 in the summer half. Go by the front, not by the hour.

The marks are the clock times the record names, laid on a 24-hour day. The bar between the first and the last covers those hours; it is not a promise of wind.

Torkelstorp is a flat-water spot on Kungsbackafjorden, south of Kungsbacka and close enough to Gothenburg for an after-work session. It is one of northern Halland's most used windsurf and kite places, and it wants south or southwest wind. Inside the bay the water goes flat and clean, which is why the speed and freestyle riders like it.
The beach is a small strip of grass and sand, and the hazards are the bridge and the rocks. Get the direction wrong and there is no reason to be there. Get it right and half the coast turns up.
No official kite access page exists, so the rules and any rescue arrangement are unconfirmed.

Typical strength

About 10-14 kt average when it blows, month by month, off modeled data. The strong sessions come when the fjord lines up with the wind.

direction-dependent
South or southwest is what switches the spot on. The windy half of the year is October to February, when between a quarter and a third of daytime hours reach 12 kt in modelled data; May, June and August are the thinnest months and June the thinnest of all.
The practical kite season on this coast is still late April to early October, because outside it the wind you gain comes with winter water and a drysuit. Monthly figures are modelled for the coordinates, not measured at the launch.

The quiver, in words

For 75-85 kg the working kite is a 12 m, with a 9 m for the days the fjord lines up properly and a 14-15 m or a foil for the summer evenings that sit at 10-12 kt. Autumn and winter southwesterlies are 7-8 m weather, and they come with drysuit water.Indicative, derived from the wind range; no local rider figures were found.

Direction to shore

Best in a southerly or southwesterly. SE through W on the right side of the dock gives the flattest water.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from the operational forecast archive at 1.5–7 km (2023-2024), daylight hours only, not a ground station: it resolves thermal, lake and valley winds far better than coarse reanalysis but still tends to understate a strong local thermal. A windy day has at least three consecutive daylight hours at 12 knots or more. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Standing depth

Big shallow area in Kungsbackafjorden.

Tides

Tide independent; practical tide range is small on this coast.

Temperature

18.4°C summer · 3.1°C winter

Wetsuit

Summer is a shorty or a normal suit, and boardshorts for one to two months. A 3/2 covers April-October; outside that you want a drysuit.

2–19°C water
Flat to choppy. The bay is often smooth and it has a name for speedsurfing.

Your level

beginnerintermediateadvanced
Shallow and flat, which gets it called beginner-friendly, while other listings put rider ability at intermediate and expert. Beginners only with instruction, the right wind direction and a plan for the hazards.

Rescue

Nothing on site. No lifeguard, no club boat, no kite rescue. The shore and the harbour belong to the local small-boat association, which runs no watersports service of any kind.
Emergencies are 112, sea rescue coordinated from the joint rescue centre in Gothenburg; the nearest volunteer sea-rescue stations are Hovås to the north and Bua to the south, both a boat ride away. Ride with someone, and carry a phone you can reach in the water.

Launch

A small grass and sand beach on the fjord, with a narrow grassy strip to lay out a kite.

Space

Hazards riders report 8

  • Rideable only on the right wind direction; otherwise it goes glassy or unpredictable.
  • Harbour and mooring traffic
  • The bridge and the rocks are the two things to keep off.
  • Rocks that show only at low water; stay out of the area 50 m east of the little jetty.
  • Rocky pier/dock near the flat-water section
  • Wind is highly direction-dependent
  • Weed in late summer and autumn, enough to foul a windsurf fin.
  • It gets crowded the moment the direction is right.
Rules & access
2026: no municipal or county kitesurfing rule was found for this launch. The waterfront, the small-boat harbour and the parking are the Torkelstorp small-boat harbour association's, and it posts no watersports rules of its own, so access runs on tolerance rather than on a right. Park clear of the ramp and the barrier, leave the boat owners room to work, and take everything out with you; parking conflicts and litter are the complaints that have surfaced here before. The public right of access covers walking to the water. It does not cover blocking a working harbour.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Chase S or SW forecasts only; a windy reading at a nearby coast station means nothing here.
  • Walk the jetty area before you rig and stay off the rocks 50 m east of it, which show only at low water.
  • Get there early on a strong S/SW day, because the small launch fills up.
  • In late summer and autumn expect weed in the water.
  • The parking is the boat association's. Park so a trailer can still get to the ramp and keep the barrier clear.
  • There is no rescue here of any kind. Ride with someone and keep a phone within reach.

FAQ

When is the best time to kite at Torkelstorp?

The spot works only in south or southwest wind; modeled data lists January, June, October and December as peak months.

Is Torkelstorp suitable for beginners?

Sources disagree: some call it beginner-friendly because it is shallow and flat, others list it as intermediate to expert, so beginners should treat it as conditional on instruction and correct wind direction.

What is the wind like?

Average wind in peak months is about 13 knots, with the fjord producing very flat water on the right side of the dock in a south-southwest to west angle.

What are the hazards?

Rocks near a jetty about 50 metres east of the launch, harbour and mooring traffic, and the fact the spot only works in specific wind directions.
