The spot

Varadero's kite beach is the east end of the Hicacos Peninsula, in front of the Marina Palace / Paradisus resort strip, where the sand is widest and the bathers thin out. Underfoot it is white sand, shallow for about 50 m at low tide, flat to choppy, with small-to-medium waves once it blows.

Wind and season

The wind is the north-coast trade, NE/ENE at 14-20 kt in the winter months, with cold fronts that swing it north and push 25-30 kt through in January; November to April is the season, December through March the reliable core. Launch away from the hotel-front crowds and away from the buildings, which chew up the wind; the old Barcelo/Blau Marina Palace end is the usual pick in NE wind because the flatter water lies east of it.

Beginners and downwind

Beginners can learn here: the shallows are wide and the schools are on the sand. The full-peninsula downwinder is roughly 20-25 km from the east end and needs a pickup arranged, since not every hotel-front section is a place you can land.

Rescue and logistics

Rescue is listed as a feature and lifeguards are reportedly on the resort sections, but nobody has confirmed a dedicated kite rescue boat. VRA airport is 25-50 minutes away, which makes this the easiest base in Cuba, provided you bring every spare you might need because kite gear is hard to buy or import in the country.

ENE is the year-round dominant wind on Cuba's north coast, which is why the north side is the reliable side.

Winter wind

Winter cold fronts off the United States come through with strong northerlies that back through NW before settling NNE to ENE, and that swing is where the occasional north-west reading comes from rather than any different section of the peninsula.

Spring, summer and autumn

Spring and autumn Atlantic high pressure gives 12-25 kt for days at a time. July and August get an early-afternoon thermal of 15 kt and up, stronger in the west of the island than the centre or east. Southerlies are rare.

For Varadero itself the season is November-March or November-April.

Rescue

The resort sections have hotel lifeguards and beach flags, and spot listings tick a rescue box, but no dedicated kite rescue boat has been confirmed and no public number for the beach was found. The schools on the sand are the practical answer; ask them before you ride the far end on your own.

Wide white-sand beach around the eastern hotel strip. Do not launch directly in front of the crowded hotel sections. The former Barcelo/Blau Marina Palace area at the tip of the peninsula is the usual launch in NE wind, with the flatter water east of it.

2026: no Varadero-specific kite rules; none were on the books in 2025 either. Reportedly the resort beach sections close to bathers once the wind reaches about 20 knots, which is the same wind that makes the beach worth riding. Talk to a local before you go out, and do not launch in front of the crowded hotel sections.

Schools that ride here

Rider tips

Rig at the east end, away from the crowded hotel fronts, and ask Cuba Kiters or Caribbean Riders where the active launch is that week.
Keep clear of the buildings: the wind close to the hotels is gusty and disturbed, and the flatter water is east of the old Marina Palace.
Pack a warm layer for after a winter session; front days and sunset both turn cold, and a 3 mm suit is only for the few cold days in late December, January or February.
Doing the 20-25 km peninsula downwinder: arrange a pickup and a local to tell you which hotel fronts you can land on, because many are not suitable.
Bring every spare you might need (lines, bladders, a pump): kite gear is hard to buy or import in Cuba.
In strong wind or bad weather check the beach flag and whether the hotel lifeguards are on; undertow and higher surf show up on those days.
The 50 m shelf at the old Marina Palace end is the teaching water. The strip in front of the main hotels is neither as shallow nor as free of bathers, so find out which section the schools are using that week.

Fly into VRA and take the hotel transfer, a taxi, a chartered bus or a hire car; the Viazul bus gets you to downtown Varadero and a local taxi does the rest. Flying to Havana and driving about two hours is the other way in.
