External renown — how known this place is in the kite world. Not a quality rating.

Agropoli and Paestum sit on the same long sandy Gulf of Salerno beach in the Cilento, a slower, more residential stretch of the Campania coast than the Amalfi side, with an ancient Greek temple site as the headline non-kite draw.
It suits riders who want an easy beach-town base with real Italian food and a UNESCO site on the doorstep rather than nightlife — it is not the place for a big traveller or nomad scene.

The spot cards

Good to know before you go2

  • Agropoli is comparatively thinly documented as a kite spot online compared with its neighbours — go in expecting to scout locally rather than relying on a detailed spot writeup.
  • Both ends of the Agropoli beach have rocks and cliffs, and Paestum's shore break and currents strengthen in wind — check the specific launch in person.

The spots

  1. Agropoli

    sea · beginner ok

Agropoli sits on the Cilento coast south of Salerno, and the kite record for it is thin.

Agropoli: the long version, the launch and the rules

    More on Agropoli

The water is shallow, tide-independent and flat to choppy, with small waves once the wind strengthens; the beach is sandy, and both ends close with rocks, stones and cliffs. The launch area is medium-sized, which works in May or October and gets awkward in August when the seafront fills with beach users. Nobody has published a dominant wind direction or a normal wind strength for the San Marco seafront, and that is the gap that matters, because you cannot plan a trip around a spot whose working direction is unknown. A local operator counts Agropoli among its Gulf of Salerno spots, so there is kite activity here, but the launch corridor status and any rescue cover are unconfirmed. Winter water sits around 14 C, so anything outside high summer needs a suit.

    Getting on the water

A medium launch and landing area on a sandy beach with shallow water off it. The pin is the Agropoli San Marco seafront, not the separate village of San Marco di Castellabate.

    Rules and access

2025: Ordinanza di Sicurezza Balneare n. 35/2025 for the Agropoli coast entered into force on 16 May 2025, setting the bathing season from 17 May to 21 September 2025 with mandatory lifeguard service at bathing establishments from 08:00 to 20:00. It covers lifeguard and beach-safety provisions only, with nothing on kitesurf or windsurf launch corridors. No Agropoli-specific 2026 kite corridor or kitesurf rule is published; look for a posted corridor on the beach before launching.

  2. Paestum

    sea · beginner ok

Paestum is a long sandy beach on the Gulf of Salerno, near the Greek temples, and it works for kite, wingfoil and windsurf.

Paestum: the long version, the launch and the rules

    More on Paestum

The water is shallow with chop and small waves; on a sandy bottom the swell stands up, so a session can be flat one day and a beach break the next. NW Maestrale comes in side-shore, W to NW Ponente runs side-shore to onshore, and SW Libeccio also works. SE Scirocco and S Ostro are the unresolved part: reportedly side to side-on into the bay, and just as plausibly blocked from it, so treat a south forecast as a maybe. The required level is contested too. Shore break, currents in strong wind and a summer beach full of swimmers are enough reason for a first-timer not to ride here alone. April to September are the months, though the westerly summer thermal is already weak this far down the coast. Check the current Agropoli and Capaccio Paestum corridor and swimming-zone rules before rigging in bathing season; no readable 2026 text was found.

    Getting on the water

Long sandy beach, with a spot on the wide beach in front of Hotel Parco dei Principi offering private parking, bar, restaurant and lawn for packing gear. Free parking is available elsewhere, though some designated parking is paid in summer.

    If it goes wrong

No kite-specific rescue was found, and no lifeguard arrangement covering the kite beach. In an emergency on the water the call is 1530, free and answered day and night, or the Agropoli coastguard operations room on 0974 825201; VHF channel 16 reaches the nearest maritime authority.

    Rules and access

2025 season order 35/2025 of the Agropoli maritime district, which covers Capaccio Paestum along with Agropoli, Castellabate and the Cilento communes: through the bathing season — the third Saturday of May to the third Sunday of September, or longer where the regional season is longer — the sea within 200 m of the beach is reserved for bathers between 08:00 and 20:00, and no craft may sail, anchor or stop inside it, kitesurf and windsurf named explicitly. Crossing that band is done only through a marked launch corridor: at least 10 m wide, square to the shore, running to the outer limit of the bathing water, red buoys every 20 m over the first 100 m and every 50 m after that, white flags on the outermost pair, and minimum steerage speed inside it. Kitesurf itself is governed by a separate standing order of the same office, n. 20/2016 of 29 April 2016 as amended, whose text was not obtained; nor was a 2026 season order. Emergency at sea: 1530, free and answered around the clock, the Agropoli coastguard operations room on 0974 825201, or VHF channel 16.

Getting there & around

  • Salerno Costa d'Amalfi Airport (QSR), about 21 km southeast of Salerno — Aeroitalia (focus city), Ryanair and Volotea (2026)
  • Naples International Airport (NAP), the larger regional hub, roughly 100 km north
Car neededHelpful — the Cilento's mountainous, village-scattered terrain rewards a car for day trips, though the Agropoli/Paestum coastal strip itself is walkable and cyclable once you're based there.
TransfersAgropoli-Castellabate station on the Tyrrhenian coastal line has regional and medium-distance trains; from Salerno airport, the Salerno Airlink coach or CSTP line 8 bus reaches Salerno city and its station.

What riders say

6 recurring claims

  1. Paestum is the one that actually works: a long open sand beach with nothing in the way, big enough to launch and land without thinking, and it takes wind from almost every direction - NW, W, SW, S and SE all give something, with the launch shifting inside the beach (the Laura end for thermal, Licinella near the Solofrone river mouth when it swings southwest).

    consensus×3 riders

  2. August is written off, and for traffic and beach crowds rather than any rule. From mid-September the beaches empty out and you can ride almost anywhere the wind is, with weekends still busier than weekdays.

    consensus×3 riders

  3. Agropoli itself is barely a kite spot. The bay at the west end of town is small and hemmed by rocks and cliffs at both ends, and it works better as a swim than a session; the riding happens a few kilometres up the coast at Paestum or well south of town.

    majority×2 riders

  4. The thermal is not a given here, and that is the honest headline. It fills in on a very sunny, dry day when there is already a moderate west or northwest gradient underneath it; otherwise you are waiting for a front to come through.

    majority×2 riders

  5. Wind comes less often here than on the Amalfi side of the gulf, and the trade is a deliberate one: fewer sessions, in exchange for scenery and space instead of the parking wars and crowds further north.

    majority×2 riders

  6. The wider stretch is treated as one spot with a car attached: move fifty kilometres along the coast and you can find something rideable in almost any wind, with Case del Conte south of Agropoli the wave option in southerlies and Acciaroli and Casal Velino the next stops down.

Scene & life

VibeA small-town Italian beach resort — summer brings Italian domestic tourists, the off-season is quiet and residential; no dedicated kite or nomad social scene is documented.
Must try
  • mozzarella di bufala campana — buffalo mozzarella, historically tied to the marshland around the Sele plain and Paestum
  • Cilento white figs DOP, dried and often glazed with chocolate or honey
  • anchovies prepared multiple ways — stuffed, marinated, oregano-seasoned — an Agropoli speciality
Activities
  • the Paestum archaeological park — three Doric Greek temples (Hera I, Hera II/Neptune, Athena) plus a fourth temple discovered in 2019
  • Agropoli's medieval castle and old town
  • Baia di Trentova, a cove reached on foot via a narrow land bridge just south of Agropoli
Day trips
  • the Velia archaeological site, more Greek/Roman ruins further south
  • Castellabate and Acciaroli along the Cilento coast
  • villages inside the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park (e.g. Roscigno) for hiking
Pairs withthe wider Cilento coast (Castellabate, Acciaroli, Palinuro) and the Amalfi Coast/Naples, both within day-trip or short-transfer range.

History & trivia

Scene & life

  • Paestum was founded as the Greek colony of Poseidonia around 600 BCE, later became Lucanian, then Roman Paestum, and was gradually abandoned by the 8th–9th century, partly due to malaria and Saracen raids.
  • Agropoli's coastal defence towers date to 1564, part of a chain built against raids.

Itinerary idea

Base in Agropoli or on the Paestum beachfront, do the temples early morning before the heat, and use a rest/no-wind day for a Cilento coast drive south to Castellabate or Acciaroli.

FAQ

Is Agropoli suitable for beginners?

It's documented as an any-level spot with shallow, tide-independent water and flat-to-choppy conditions, though the sandy beach is bordered by rocks, stones and cliffs at both ends.

Is Paestum suitable for beginners?

Accounts differ - some rate it any-level, while others mark it intermediate because of shore break and currents, so check conditions on the day.

What's the water like?

Both spots are shallow with chop and small waves that build as wind strengthens, on the Gulf of Salerno's long sandy coastline.
