Barletta Freekite Beach & Margherita di Savoia

beginner-friendlygear rental

2 spots · 3 schools

A stretch of real Puglia Adriatic sand: Barletta's wide Ponente beach is a summer thermal-wind kite beach next to a genuinely historic town, and Margherita di Savoia's long shoreline runs beside Europe's largest working salt pans. Good for a summer-thermal road trip through Puglia with a history/nature angle; Barletta specifically is a warm-season spot, not a year-round base.

Good to know before you go2

  • Barletta's thermal wind component is easy for forecasts to miss — it builds through the afternoon rather than showing on a morning check.
  • Margherita di Savoia's beach parking is free off-season but paid and busier in summer.

Barletta Freekite Beach: the long version, the launch and the rules

    More on Barletta Freekite Beach

June to August is the documented season and the day has a shape: the Levante (E) thermal fills in around 14:00 and runs to about 17:00, usually 15-20 knots. That thermal is easy to miss, because forecasts under-read it; Levante averages up to about 20 knots, the afternoon can also settle from NE, and Grecale comes onshore around 13-18 knots. A 75 kg rider is on a 12 m in that band and wants a 9 m in the bag for the stronger days. Water is chop with the odd small wave, held under about 0.5 m by summer Levante, and bigger further out when Tramontana or a stronger Maestrale is in; it runs 26.6 C in summer and 12.6 C in winter. Ponente is offshore and Libeccio side-off, both gusty and inconsistent, and neither is a day to ride unless the rescue dinghy is on the water. Swimmers through the season, the road and concrete behind the sand, the harbour wall at the east end and shells in the water are the rest of the list.

    Getting on the water

Wide sandy launch on Barletta's Litoranea di Ponente / Lungomare Pietro Mennea, past the bathing establishments toward Margherita di Savoia, in the Lega Navale and Spiaggia dei surfisti area. The sand here is dark and iron-rich rather than pale. The school end has a launch corridor, a marked kite zone, parking, changing rooms and a bar, and it is the busiest patch of the beach with local riders.

    If it goes wrong

Freekite runs a dinghy for rescue among its services, and the school end of the beach advertises a launch corridor and a marked kite zone. Do not ride Ponente or Libeccio unless that boat is on the water. For anything serious the free Coast Guard line is 1530 and the European emergency number is 112; the Barletta harbour office is on 0883 531020. Staffed beaches carry one qualified lifeguard per 150 m of frontage in season, but that cover is aimed at swimmers close in, not at a kiter half a kilometre out.

    Rules and access

2026: kitesurfing is not named anywhere in the local rules, so what binds you is the bathing regime. The Barletta harbourmaster's bathing-safety ordinance no. 21/2026, covering Bisceglie, Trani, Barletta and Margherita di Savoia, reserves the sea out to 200 m from the shoreline on low coast (100 m on cliff coast) for swimmers from 1 May to 30 September, prohibits sail-powered craft inside that band, and allows it to be crossed only inside a marked launch/landing corridor. Puglia's regional bathing ordinance of 15 April 2026 sets the bathing season itself at 23 May to 13 September, 24 hours a day, and makes the coastal municipality responsible for building and maintaining those launch corridors to the harbourmaster's specification. The school end of the beach advertises a launch corridor and a marked kite zone, but no published document fixes where they run, so line yourself up on the flags on the day. On staffed beaches the ordinance requires one qualified lifeguard per 150 m of frontage.

  2. Margherita di Savoia

    sea · beginner ok

Margherita di Savoia is a long sandy town beach on the Adriatic, open to Maestrale and Tramontana, and a spot Puglia riders take seriously for freeride and slalom.

The model here carries the month's average wind rather than a count of windy days: it reaches 11.6 kt in April, the strongest month it models for this spot.

NW and N run parallel to the coast; NE Grecale comes straight in and chops the water up, and there is a coastal current when it blows hard. The bottom shelves gradually and the beach is big, so there is room to rig even in season. Wind People teaches at Lido Valerio, with beginner, intermediate and advanced courses, a launch corridor, a KiteZone, parking, changing rooms, a bar and a rescue boat. June through September is the main season, though the spot is open all year, and summer means sharing the sand: the 2026 Puglia ordinance keeps the first 200 m off a low sandy shore for bathing between 23 May and 13 September, and corridors have to be set up under the maritime authority's rules. Nobody has published a monthly average wind speed for this beach, so the range you will actually get is unconfirmed. On a windless day the salt pans behind the town are worth the walk for the flamingos.

    Getting on the water

Long sandy beach along the edge of town. Wind People runs its courses at Lido Valerio, with a launch corridor and a KiteZone.

    If it goes wrong

A gommone rescue boat runs with the school. Whether independent riders are covered is unconfirmed.

    Rules and access

2026: the Puglia bathing ordinance sets the season from 23 May to 13 September and reserves the sea within 200 m of beaches and low rocky shores, and 100 m off cliffs, for bathing 24 hours a day across that whole period, unless the maritime authority fixes different limits. Setting up and maintaining launch corridors falls to the coastal municipalities for public use, and concessionaires may install their own for rental and sports activity, in both cases under the competent maritime authority's rules. Wind People operates a KiteZone and a launch corridor at Lido Valerio.

  • Bari Palese, roughly 55-60km south, is the nearest airport with confirmed regional links; Margherita di Savoia's town tourism page also lists Brindisi, Foggia and Taranto airports and Trenitalia/regional bus (SITA Puglia, AMET, COTRAP) links, without giving exact distances
Car neededRecommended — the two towns are about 15km apart and the salt-pan reserve and beach parking are easiest with a car.

What riders say

5 recurring claims

  1. The kite beach at Barletta is the Ponente side, not the town beach — a long wide strip of fine sand with the harbour wall closing the east end, and the months people name are late spring through early autumn on thermals.

    consensus×3 riders

  2. The wind and the swimmers arrive together: the best months are the same ones when bathers are on the sand, and swimmers are listed straight-faced as a hazard.

    majority×2 riders

  3. There is a way of doing things here and the advice is to ask before you rig: the local crew is described as welcoming, but the sensible move is to fly with them and check the rules first, and the school side of the beach runs a marked kite zone and launch corridor.

    majority×2 riders

  4. Margherita is the open, flat-water option next door: a long sandy beach with a progressive bottom and a lot of room, reliably windy on Maestrale and Tramontana, with northeast turning it onshore and choppy.

    majority×2 riders

  5. Margherita is read as a speed and slalom spot with a past: the old windsurf scene there has faded and kiters are the ones still using it.
