Burriana: the long version, the launch and the rules

    More on Burriana

L'Arenal, the long sandy beach north of the harbour, gives roughly 900 m of kite space between the harbour mole to the south and a second mole to the north, and the water is flat to choppy with small waves when the wind has east in it. Levante out of the southeast comes in onshore to side-onshore; NNE and SSW run sideshore, which is the better setup here. The published statistics are discouraging, around 5-8 kt monthly average and 4-12 days a month at 4 Bft or more, but they leave out thermal wind and summer brings thermal breezes the numbers never count. Nobody has published a local kite ordinance, a buoyed channel or any rescue arrangement, so this is a spot for someone who already lives an hour away rather than a trip. Intermediate and up: both ends of the beach are hard structure, the sand is full of bathers all summer, and no shallow standing area is confirmed. Water sits around 25.3 C in summer and 14.7 C in winter, so a shorty covers most of the year.

    Getting on the water

The long sandy L'Arenal beach north of Burriana harbour, about 1 km of sand and roughly 120 m wide, with about 900 m of reported kite space between the harbour mole to the south and a second mole to the north. Parking sits at the beach and the walk to the water is short. Kayak, sail, paddle and windsurf instruction runs from the Club Nautico and the Escuela del Mar at the same beach; no kite operator is among them.

    If it goes wrong

Lifeguards and lifeguard towers are posted on L'Arenal through the bathing season, with the dates and hours not published. Nothing kite-specific exists: no club rescue boat, no kite school on the sand, no posted rescue number. Emergencies go through 112.

    Rules and access

2026: no Burriana-specific kite ordinance and no marked kite channel is confirmed. The general Spanish beach rule sets a 200 m bathing zone and requires you to use the buoyed access channel where one is laid.

  2. Playa del Gurugú

    sea · beginner ok

Gurugu is the club beach of the Castellon strip: broad fine sand in front of the Aeroclub, and the home water of Club Eolo Castellon for kitesurf, windsurf, paddle surf and hydrofoil.

The model here carries the month's average wind rather than a count of windy days: it reaches 11.2 kt in March, the strongest month it models for this spot.

Playa del Gurugú: the long version, the launch and the rules

    More on Playa del Gurugú

Formula Kite has raced here more than once, in 2020, 2022 and 2023, which tells you the water off Grao de Castellon holds a race course and that foil and race training make sense on it. What it does not tell you is what the wind does across a year. The only firm figure on record is 12-14 knots of easterly during official training in July 2020, and one afternoon is not a season. The second gap is the zoning: the specific kite channel on record, 50 m wide on the sand with 200 m of buoyed water, dates from 2010, and nothing current confirms where the line sits now. Ask the club before you rig, especially in June, July and August with bathers on the sand and a regatta possible offshore.

    Getting on the water

Wide sandy launch in the Club Eolo Castellon area, in front of the Aeroclub de Castellon. The delimited surf and kitesurf area on record from 2010 was a 50 m wide beach channel with 200 m of buoyed water.

    If it goes wrong

There is cover, but only in season. A lifeguard base sits on the sand about 280 m from the launch and a Policia Local beach unit about 265 m, reachable on +34 964 355 400. Staffing dates are unconfirmed and follow the bathing season, so outside the summer months assume nobody is watching the water. 112 is the emergency number in the Valencian Community, and the nearest health centres are 1.2 km and 2.8 km inland. Nothing is arranged for independent kiters outside events.

    Rules and access

2010: Gurugu had a delimited surf and kitesurf area, enlarged that year to a 50 m wide beach channel and 200 m of buoyed sea, with those sports prohibited elsewhere on the beach. No 2026 municipal map or current ordinance clause for the kite channel has been found.

What riders say

5 recurring claims

  1. Gurugú is not a casual beach for kiting, it is the venue: the Spanish Formula Kite series and national championship have run there year after year off a local club.

    consensus×4 riders

  2. For roughly a week in early August the Arenal stops being a beach: a festival of several hundred thousand people takes it over, with a stage built on the sand.

    consensus×3 riders

  3. The wind story riders tell each other is seasonal rather than daily: strong in autumn and winter, softer through spring and summer, and rarely nothing at all.

    majority×2 riders

  4. Burriana's Arenal is the roomier of the two: about 900 metres of sand between two moles, flat to choppy, tide-independent, with small waves when it blows from the east.

    majority×2 riders

  5. Outside that week, summer here is described as less mobbed than the nearby coastal cities, even though the spot profiles still mark June to August as beach-user months.
