On the clock

11:00 · 13:00 · 15:00 · 17:00 · 19:00 · 21:00

A midday and afternoon spot. Nights and mornings sit close to calm, the breeze starts building around 11:00, holds its strongest hours between 13:00 and 17:00 and fades out between 19:00 and 21:00. In March the same curve peaks later, nearer 15:00-17:00. Timing from a gridded 2016-2025 hourly record; it matches the local description of breeze in the central hours of the day.

The marks are the clock times the record names, laid on a 24-hour day. The bar between the first and the last covers those hours; it is not a promise of wind.

Gurugu is the club beach of the Castellon strip: broad fine sand in front of the Aeroclub, and the home water of Club Eolo Castellon for kitesurf, windsurf, paddle surf and hydrofoil.
Formula Kite has raced here more than once, in 2020, 2022 and 2023, which tells you the water off Grao de Castellon holds a race course and that foil and race training make sense on it. What it does not tell you is what the wind does across a year.
The only firm figure on record is 12-14 knots of easterly during official training in July 2020, and one afternoon is not a season. The second gap is the zoning: the specific kite channel on record, 50 m wide on the sand with 200 m of buoyed water, dates from 2010, and nothing current confirms where the line sits now.
Ask the club before you rig, especially in June, July and August with bathers on the sand and a regatta possible offshore.

fills in: A midday and afternoon spot.

Typical strength

Gentle breeze far more often than strong wind. The regular pattern from April to October is a soft onshore that fills through the middle of the day; official race training on this water in July 2020 ran on an easterly of 12-14 kt, which is about as good as an ordinary summer afternoon gets. The bigger days are winter and spring NE. No month-by-month measurement exists for this beach.

An active forecast and race venue. No month-by-month wind climatology has been published for this exact beach.
The breeze season runs April to October, holding with some regularity in the central hours of the day. Formula Kite events have run at Gurugu in July, including the 2020, 2022 and 2023 Spain Series and Copa de Espana editions; official training in July 2020 had easterly wind of 12-14 knots, which is an event condition and not a climatology.
Winter and spring supply the stronger NE days rather than the summer breeze.

The quiver, in words

Nothing local pins these down. Indicative for a 75-85 kg rider against the wind on record: 13-15 m twin-tip covers the ordinary afternoon breeze, a foil earns its keep on everything under 12 kt, and 10-12 m is enough for the NE and NNE days that push past 18 kt. Race riders here are on foil kit of their own choosing.

Direction to shore

The beach runs almost due north-south and faces east, so both working families come in off the water. ENE and NE arrive side-onshore from your left as you look out; S and SE side-onshore from your right. NW through NNW is the offshore direction here and is the one to leave alone.Angle read off the mapped shoreline.

Dominant direction

ENE or NE, and S or SE. Those are the two families that work, and the stronger episodes are almost all in the first: in a 2016-2025 gridded record, the NE and NNE sectors hold about four in ten of every hour above 18 kt.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from weather reanalysis on a 10–25 km grid (2022-2024), not a ground station: reliable for trade and synoptic winds, understates thermal sea breezes and valley winds. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Standing depth

Shallow a long way out. A bathymetric grid keeps the water under about a metre for the first 150-200 m off the sand, near 2.5 m by 300 m and 3.5-5.5 m from roughly 400-500 m; Mediterranean tide barely shifts it.Good for walking a kite back, and the reason a dead breeze here means a long wade rather than a swim. Read off a depth grid, not paced out.

Tides

No tide dependence specific to the kite spot is on record; it is an open Mediterranean beach.

13–29°C water
Open Mediterranean sandy beach used for windsurfing, kitesurfing, wingfoil and kitefoil. Fine sand in front of the Aeroclub de Castellon, and the home spot of Club Eolo Castellon. The water off Gurugu has been used as a Formula Kite race area.

Your level

beginnerintermediateadvanced
Beginner kitesurf lessons run in Grao-Castellon, and the same water hosts Formula Kite racing, so the beach carries both instruction and advanced foil and race use when conditions and zoning allow.

Rescue

There is cover, but only in season. A lifeguard base sits on the sand about 280 m from the launch and a Policia Local beach unit about 265 m, reachable on +34 964 355 400. Staffing dates are unconfirmed and follow the bathing season, so outside the summer months assume nobody is watching the water.
112 is the emergency number in the Valencian Community, and the nearest health centres are 1.2 km and 2.8 km inland. Nothing is arranged for independent kiters outside events.

Launch

Wide sandy launch in the Club Eolo Castellon area, in front of the Aeroclub de Castellon. The delimited surf and kitesurf area on record from 2010 was a 50 m wide beach channel with 200 m of buoyed water.

Hazards riders report 7

  • summer bathers
  • riding outside the delimited sports zone was prohibited under the 2010 zoning; current boundaries unconfirmed
  • event traffic during Formula Kite regattas
  • current rescue arrangements unconfirmed
  • NW through NNW is offshore on an east-facing beach, and the NNW sector carries a real share of the strongest hours on record.
  • Lifeguard cover is seasonal: outside the bathing months there is nobody on the sand.
  • The water stays under a metre for the first 150-200 m, so a dying breeze leaves you wading rather than drifting in.
Rules & access
2010: Gurugu had a delimited surf and kitesurf area, enlarged that year to a 50 m wide beach channel and 200 m of buoyed sea, with those sports prohibited elsewhere on the beach. No 2026 municipal map or current ordinance clause for the kite channel has been found.

Rider tips

  • Ask Club Eolo or the town hall where the sports zone runs this season; the only channel dimensions on record are from 2010.
  • Use it for foil or race training on a moderate easterly or a sea breeze, and do not plan around 12-14 knots as an average.
  • Keep clear of the bathing area, and of race operations whenever a Formula Kite event is on.
  • Bring your own safety plan: rescue cover for independent riders outside events is unconfirmed.
  • Do not turn up at 09:00. The breeze does not fill until about 11:00 and the useful window is 13:00 to 17:00.
  • Leave it alone on a NW or NNW day: that is offshore here, on a beach where the shallows run 200 m out and the help is seasonal.
  • Note the beach police number, +34 964 355 400, before you rig.
