thermal easterly

11:00 · 12:00 · 14:00 · 16:00 · 19:00 · 21:00

Thermal days run to the standard sea-breeze clock: nothing before late morning, a build from about 11:00-12:00, the peak between 14:00 and 16:00, then a fade from 19:00 and gone by 21:00. Synoptic easterlies ignore that and can blow through the night. Onset taken from modelled hourly wind for this coast, not from a beach station.

The marks are the clock times the record names, laid on a 24-hour day. The bar between the first and the last covers those hours; it is not a promise of wind.

Els Terrers is the urban beach on the Benicassim seafront, facing east into the Mediterranean, fine sand with a promenade right behind it and a sailing school on it. The kite winds are E Llevant and SE Garbi, both onshore to side-onshore on this Castellon coast, and what they produce is chop and small waves, not flat water.
The problem here is under the surface: a line of moles and wave breakers runs along this stretch and some of them sit submerged, so you want them located before you ride anything close to shore. The beach is only about 30 m wide, which in July and August leaves very little sand between the promenade and the bathers.
No dedicated kite zone at Els Terrers has been confirmed and the posted summer status contradicts itself, so ask before you rig. Intermediate and up, and best with someone local pointing at the breakwaters. Spring and late September are the sane months.

Typical strength

Sea-breeze afternoons sit around 8-14 kt. The 15-20 kt days come with a spring or autumn easterly rather than with midsummer: in modelled hourly wind for this stretch of coast only 1-3% of daytime hours reach 12 kt from May to September, against about 17% in March. Indicative, no wind station on the beach.

A local Mediterranean sea-breeze and synoptic spot. No reliable wind statistics exist for it.
April to September is the working assumption, from the Mediterranean easterly and thermal pattern rather than from anything published for Benicassim: no best-month or knot data exists for the beach. More days with wind appear outside summer, with no direction data behind that.

The quiver, in words

A big-kite beach. For 75-85 kg the summer sea breeze is 12-15 m work, and a light-wind board or a foil turns marginal afternoons into sessions. 9-11 m covers the 15-20 kt spring and autumn easterlies.Anything under 8 m stays in the bag most of the year. Indicative, derived from the wind range and not from measured local sessions.

Direction to shore

onshore to side-onshore on the east-facing beach

E and SE are the named rideable directions in spot guides, locally Llevant E and Garbi SE

The model is wrong here

The model reads 11% of days at its best month, which does not sit with the season and the wind strength this record states. The figures are kept and drawn as hatching so no wind colour can be read off them, and the ringed months are the ones riders name.

riders' months

Riders and schools name these months. The model reads lower here, and both are shown rather than averaged.

Modelled from the operational forecast archive at 1.5–7 km (2023-2024), daylight hours only, not a ground station: it resolves thermal, lake and valley winds far better than coarse reanalysis but still tends to understate a strong local thermal. A windy day has at least three consecutive daylight hours at 12 knots or more. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

The water

Type

chop and small waves

Standing depth

No published figure. The hooked breakwaters box the shore into a chain of shallow bathing coves, so there is standing water inside them, but how far out you can walk and where the bottom drops away is not recorded anywhere.

Tides

Tide independent.

Temperature

27°C summer · 14°C winter

Wetsuit

shorts or shorty in summer; shorty or long legs in spring/autumn; full wetsuit in winter

Currents

The line of breakwaters closes the beach into a run of coves and keeps along-shore current off it. The structures, not the flow, are what you plan around.

13–29°C water
Els Terrers is an urban beach 1,700 m long and roughly 30 m wide, fine sand with gravel in some listings, calm bathing water and a seafront promenade. For kiting it is choppy water and small waves in E and SE wind.

Your level

not for beginners hereintermediateadvanced
Intermediate and expert. Intermediates can use it and experts will enjoy it, but the submerged and semi-submerged breakwaters rule it out as a default beginner beach without local supervision.

Rescue

Lifeguard and first-aid posts run by the local police through the bathing season, with two salvamento posts marked on Els Terrers, roughly one near each end.
Posted hours are 11:00-19:30 in June and September and 11:00-20:00 in July and August, from a municipal beach poster published in 2021 and unconfirmed for 2026. Outside those hours, and outside the season, there is nobody on the sand: 112. No kite-specific rescue.

Launch

Rig on the urban sand only where the beach zoning and the bather density allow, and keep clear of the moles and breakwaters.

Space

Medium. Els Terrers runs about 1.7 km but is only about 30 m wide, with a promenade and summer beach services taking part of that.

Hazards riders report 8

  • submerged breakwaters (rock groins): the local hazard here, and the unmarked ones are the problem
  • busy promenade beach in summer
  • many wave breakers/moles, including some under the surface
  • summer beach users in June, July and August
  • urban promenade beach with seasonal services and limited beach width
  • unclear summer kite access restrictions
  • two buoyed navigation channels at the eastern end of the beach, shared with the sailing school traffic
  • lifeguard-supervised bathing zones occupy the frontage through the season
Rules & access
2026: the governing text is the municipal ordinance on safety in the use and enjoyment of the town's coast. The town buoys ten entry and exit channels along its beaches, craft have to use them, and depositing or leaving craft outside the buoyed zones is prohibited. On Els Terrers both marked channels sit at the eastern end, one straight and one forked, near the sailing school; the rest of the frontage is bathing water under lifeguard supervision. No municipal text names kitesurfing at Els Terrers, and the posted status contradicts itself: restricted in summer in one listing, no information in another. Check the buoyed zoning and the channel mouths on the sand before you rig.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Ask locally exactly where the submerged breakwaters sit before riding close to shore.
  • Walk the full 1.7 km of Els Terrers at a quiet hour and mark every mole before you launch.
  • Avoid June, July and August: the bathing crowd owns a beach only about 30 m wide.
  • Watch E and SE forecasts; nothing else turns this beach on.
  • Confirm whether the summer kite restriction is active before you rig on Els Terrers.
  • The two buoyed channels are at the east end by the sailing school. Cross them, do not ride them.
  • March gives more windy hours than any summer month here. Midsummer afternoons are usually 8-12 kt.
