Bo'ao / Qionghai is Hainan's east-coast kite area, centred on Asia Bay by the Wanquan River estuary.

Season and conditions

March to June is the main season, southeast and south monsoon, over clear water and soft sand along a 2.2 km coast that holds flatter training water and wave areas on the same stretch.

For learners

Schools teach beginners here, but this is no closed lagoon: it is tidal, the sea state changes and river-mouth current runs close by, so a new rider belongs in a lesson rather than on a self-launch.

Scene and access

Bo'ao has hosted national tour events and, earlier, international racing, and in 2026 it is still where Chinese kiting concentrates, with 50+ kites up on windy days.

The winter northeast is the unresolved part: the bay is described as working November-March, while the main course provider moves to Haikou for those months, so ask before you book a winter trip.

Getting in is straightforward through Haikou Meilan and the high-speed rail, and the Asia Bay resorts put you on the beach.

Getting on the water

The launchThe main launch is the Asia Bay beach at Bo'ao, along the Binhai Avenue resort frontage, with roughly 2.2 km of usable coast combining flatter training water and wave sections on clean sand.This is the same beach and adjoining water used for national tour racing, with briefings and race areas set up on it.The resident kite centre works from the beachfront with a shop, storage, showers and a compressor, which makes it the practical base whether or not you take lessons.
