Houhai, on a small peninsula in Haitang Bay, is the hub: a fishing village turned combined kite-and-surf base with two beaches facing different directions, so someone is nearly always riding through the October-March winter monsoon.

Bo'ao and Wenchang catch the March-to-June southeast monsoon on the island's east coast, while Yalong Bay trades that for polish - a five-star resort strip with kiting bolted on. It suits budget travelers at Houhai and resort riders at Sanya alike.
