2 spots · 4 schools

This is Rome's home coast for kiting, not a destination anyone flies to for the spots alone: two flat, wide Tyrrhenian beaches within an hour of the capital, busy with Roman day-trippers and weekend riders rather than travelling kiters.
It suits anyone based in Rome who wants a car-free or short-drive session and doesn't mind a working beach town rather than a resort; it does not suit riders chasing an uncrowded or scenic trip, since both spots sit inside dense summer beach-club sprawl with little of its own identity beyond the wind.

Good to know before you go2

  • Neither spot is a self-contained kite village — expect a working Italian beach town with general tourist crowds, not a rider-focused scene.
  • Summer weekend traffic on the Pontina toward Torvaianica can be heavy.

Lido dei Pini: the long version, the launch and the rules

    More on Lido dei Pini

From 1 October to 1 May the beach establishment is shut and the sand in front of La Capannina 3 is yours: very wide, flat, parking behind it, chop and small waves out front. In summer the establishment takes the beach back and riding depends on an authorized reserved area, so a July or August session is a phone call, not a plan. Usable directions are SE, S, SW, W and NW; Maestrale, Ponente and Ostro are the winds named for this launch. Water is 25.8 C at the height of summer and 13.7 C in winter, so the good months are the cold ones and you will want a proper winter suit. Beginners do learn here with a school, though the chop and the small waves are real. Nobody has published the summer corridor dates or boundaries for 2026.

    Getting on the water

Launch in front of the La Capannina 3 establishment on Lungomare delle Sterlizie, on a very wide and completely flat sandy beach. Reserved enclosed parking sits directly behind the spot, with equipment washing, changing rooms and showers, and food service from the restaurant on the beach.

    If it goes wrong

A recovery service runs at the spot alongside the school operation, and KitePoint manages an authorized reserved area through the bathing season from a base open all year. Whether either is available to riders who are not with the school or the association is unconfirmed. KitePoint answers on +39 339 5365186.

    Rules and access

The La Capannina beach works as a kite spot from 1 October to 1 May, while the seasonal establishment is closed. The stretch used for teaching is authorized by the Comune di Anzio, and KitePoint manages an authorized reserved kite area at Lido dei Pini through the bathing season, so summer riding is possible inside that managed zone even with the wider beach occupied. The 2026 summer boundaries and dates are not published, so check the signage and the status of the reserved area on site before riding in bathing season.

Torvaianica: the long version, the launch and the rules

    More on Torvaianica

The sand is wide and free of rocks, so rigging is the easy part of the day. Watch the sandbanks: when the wind tends south the sea over them turns irregular and demanding, the shore-break gets heavy, and current runs once the sea is up. It works with anything from south through northwest. Do not plan a July trip around the thermal, because the summer thermal here is not especially strong. Area Kite Torvaianica at Lungomare delle Sirene 99 is a delimited zone with rental and storage, and it is where lessons happen. In peak season the problem is not the wind but the car: the seafront fills, parking goes early, and the beach is shared with bathers.

    Getting on the water

Designated sandy kite area at Lungomare delle Sirene 99, next to BoraBora/Area Kite Torvaianica. The Acquarius nautical club is the other common launch, with parking and storage.

    If it goes wrong

Assistance is the staffed kite area at Lungomare delle Sirene 99, reachable on 333 310 5864, with the Acquarius nautical club the other manned base on the same seafront. No dedicated kite rescue boat is confirmed.

    Rules and access

2026: Pomezia's 2026 beach ordinance sits in the municipal transparency register. What is readable of it prohibits kite-surf sails from transiting or stopping flying on the beach except in allowed contexts; the full text is unconfirmed. Area Kite Torvaianica at Lungomare delle Sirene 99 is a delimited kite area, so use the designated zone or corridor and follow the posted summer bathing rules.

Car neededyes
TransfersAnzio has its own station on the FL8 regional line from Roma Termini via Roma-Campoleone, with roughly hourly departures; a fast ferry (about 1h45) also runs from Anzio to the island of Ponza. Torvaianica has no train station of its own — it is a frazione of Pomezia reached off the Via Pontina — so it is effectively car/bus territory.
Road quirksTorvaianica is reached from the Pontina state road, which backs up hard on summer weekends when Rome empties toward the coast; beachfront parking is contested in July-August.

Practical

LanguageItalian; English is inconsistent outside central Rome and tourist businesses.
MoneyEuro; Italy is broadly card-friendly, though small beach-side kiosks can be cash-only in season.
VisaItaly is in the Schengen area; standard Schengen entry rules apply.
SafetyThe Torvaianica beach itself is described as wide and rock-free, but underwater sandbanks can make the sea choppy and irregular when southerly wind builds, and currents and shore-break pick up with strong onshore wind and rough seas.

Seasons beyond windSummer is the crowded, family-beach-club season on both stretches; outside July-August the beaches empty out and are effectively local-only.

What riders say

6 recurring claims

  1. Riders who chase the Lazio summer thermal describe a dead zone running from Torvaianica south through Lavinio and the Lido dei Pini stretch. They track the wind stepping down as you move south from Campo di Mare — mid-teens becoming single figures — and picking up again only past Torre Astura toward Latina.

    majority×3 riders

  2. Summer here is big-kite riding. The gear talk from people who ride this stretch daily in July and August is about twelve metres and up being the kite that actually gets you out, not the one you keep for emergencies.

    majority×2 riders

  3. The wind counts are best in the cold half of the year, which is the opposite of when the beach is usable. Autumn fronts are what riders name for the good sessions, and the statistical peaks sit in January, March and November rather than midsummer.

    majority×2 riders

  4. The water is not the flat lagoon the flat-beach photos imply. Riders warn about a scatter of shallows that make it lumpy and irregular when the wind swings south, plus a heavy shorebreak and real current once it blows properly.

    majority×2 riders

  5. The crowding riders actually complain about is on land. Weekend and summer traffic and parking are the recurring grievance, not the number of kites in the air — this is Rome's day-trip coast and it behaves like one.

    majority×2 riders

  6. There is a designated kite area and it matters. Riders on this coast pass round the same warning: nine times out of ten nothing happens, but the coastguard does write tickets for people riding outside the authorised zone.

Scene & life

VibeRoman weekend-beach energy rather than a kite-travel scene — families and day-trippers in summer, a smaller core of local riders and instructors year-round.
Must try
  • brodetto and other Anzio fish soups
  • spaghetti alle vongole and pasta with anchovies and pecorino, both tied to the local seafood tradition
  • fresh Anzio-landed fish: lobster, turbot, sea bream, bass, mullet, sole
Activities
  • Anzio's Roman-era ruins and harbour
  • Tor Caldara nature reserve near Anzio
  • Zoomarine water park at Torvaianica (opened 2005)
Day trips
  • Ponza island by fast ferry from Anzio (about 1h45)
  • Rome itself, about an hour away by train or car
Pairs withRome city break — this is realistically a coastal add-on to a Rome trip, not a standalone kite destination.

History & trivia

Scene & life

  • Anzio was the site of the January 22, 1944 Allied amphibious landing (Operation Shingle), a pivotal WWII operation that took months of hard fighting before contributing to Rome's liberation on June 4, 1944.
  • Anzio has also been a film location, including for Cleopatra (1963) and The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999).
  • Torvaianica only grew into a real seaside town from the 1950s, partly around notoriety from the 1953 Montesi case; uncontrolled postwar building left it run-down by the 1980s-90s before a recent repopulation, partly by young families priced out of Rome.

Itinerary idea

Base in Rome or Anzio, treat this as day sessions rather than a dedicated kite trip, and use the Anzio train line to skip driving if staying without a car.
