Marche — Porto Potenza Picena to Numana

choppywavesbeginner-friendlygear rentalmid-range

3 spots · 4 schools

A stretch of the central Adriatic coast strung with small, low-key Marche resort towns and one dramatic exception — Numana, tucked under the cliffs of Monte Conero.
It suits riders who want a mellow, mid-priced Italian beach-town trip with real day-trip variety (hill towns, a national park headland, Blue Flag beaches) rather than a party scene or a purpose-built kite camp; it is a poor fit for anyone wanting nightlife density or English-first infrastructure.

The spot cards

Good to know before you go2

  • Numana has no train station of its own — plan a car or bus link if basing there without one.
  • Porto Potenza Picena is thinly documented as a kite spot beyond basic listings; treat any specific riding claims about it with caution.

The spots

  1. Porto Potenza Picena

    sea

Porto Potenza Picena is an open Adriatic beach on the Marche coast, and the documentation on it is thin.

The model here carries the month's average wind rather than a count of windy days: it reaches 10 kt in April, the strongest month it models for this spot.

Porto Potenza Picena: the long version, the launch and the rules

    More on Porto Potenza Picena

The water is flat to choppy and tide independent, with NNW and SSE both arriving sideshore. The count is 227 days a year with usable wind, but the strong months are January, March and December, so this is a winter stop rather than a summer one. The beach is medium and sandy, with toilets, food and a car park, and a wave breaker to keep clear of. The 2026 bathing-safety ordinance covering Civitanova Marche, Potenza Picena and Porto Recanati reserves the first 300 m from shore for bathers through the season and bans kite transit inside it except through public launch corridors, and whether Porto Potenza Picena has one of those corridors is unconfirmed. Local rescue cover for independent kiters is unconfirmed. Beginners have nothing to gain here; an intermediate rider working down the Marche coast in winter does.

    Getting on the water

Medium sandy beach with toilets, food and parking. It is a short walk in, and the spot is reachable by car or by train.

    If it goes wrong

Nothing here is set up for kiters. Through the bathing season the district rule puts a lifeguard on each bathing establishment's frontage and on the municipality's free beaches, a minimum of eight continuous hours a day from 10:00 to 18:00, longer where the place opens longer, with the hours posted on a sign at the entrance. Behind that lifeguard sits a lookout platform at least 2 m above the sand, a red rowing rescue boat marked SALVATAGGIO, a rescue can or tube, 300 m of floating rescue line on a reel, binoculars, mask and fins; a rescue board, a SUP or a jetski may be added to that but never swapped in for the boat. Outside the season there is no cover and the beach has to post a sign saying so. Kite instruction in the water needs a support boat sitting near the students, ready to help. At sea, call 1530 or 112. The Civitanova Marche Coast Guard office is on 0733 810395 and the Porto Recanati beach detachment on 071 4605033.

    Rules and access

2026: the Civitanova Marche bathing-safety ordinance, n. 11 of 9 May 2026, covers Civitanova Marche, Potenza Picena and Porto Recanati. Through the bathing season - third week of May to third week of September, which the Marche region may shift by a week either way - the first 300 m from the shoreline is reserved for bathers and closed to the transit of surf, windsurf and kitesurf; its outer edge is marked with red buoys 50 m apart. Launching and landing happen only through public launch corridors, and swimming inside a corridor is itself prohibited. The corridors are specified by the district's boating regulation, ordinanza n. 8 of 23 April 2025. Minimum age 16. Daylight only, sunrise to sunset, with fair weather and visibility. A flotation aid worn at all times: lifejacket, floating harness or floating wetsuit. A kite-only corridor runs 300 m out, 30 m wide at the beach and widening to 80 m by the 150 m mark, edged with orange buoys 20 m apart over the first 150 m and 50 m apart beyond, red buoys at the 150 m line, and 80 cm outer buoys reading CORRIDOIO RISERVATO AI KITESURF - VIETATA OGNI ALTRA ATTIVITA, with the same wording on a sign at the water's edge. Whoever holds the authorisation must keep a first-aid kit, a VHF for the Coast Guard on channel 16, and a boat able to recover a kitesurfer. A corridor takes two riders at once, one going out and one coming in. Where a free beach has no corridor at all, you may still cross the bathing strip when no bathers are in the water, on a course as near perpendicular to the shore as you can hold and with the kite down. Corridors are authorised case by case by the municipality on the Coast Guard's opinion, and no ordinance lists which Porto Potenza Picena frontages hold one, so check on the sand.

La Pineta: the long version, the launch and the rules

    More on La Pineta

Water is flat behind the wave breaker and chops up outside it, and the beach is sand and pebble rather than clean sand. It is wide, with a bathing establishment, parking, food, a recovery service and rooms, and MKS Kiteschool sits at Via della Repubblica, presso pineta Portorecanati. Ships out of the harbour, the breakwaters themselves and summer beach traffic are what you watch. The rule matters more than the wind here: in the bathing season the first 300 m from shore is reserved for swimmers and you cross it only through an authorised public launch corridor (2026). Beginner suitability is unclear, rated both beginner-to-pro and intermediate-to-expert, so a first-timer should phone the school rather than turn up. Nobody has published a typical wind strength for the spot, and the season that gets quoted, every month from January to December, is not a season.

    Getting on the water

Wide sandy beach in front of the harbour, next to the Porto Recanati pineta. Long enough to rig without queuing, with schools, recovery, food, a bathing establishment, parking and accommodation on the spot.

    If it goes wrong

A recovery service exists. Who runs it and when it operates is unconfirmed.

    Rules and access

2026: the Civitanova Marche bathing-safety ordinance for Civitanova Marche, Potenza Picena and Porto Recanati reserves the first 300 m from shore for bathing during the bathing season and prohibits transit by surf, wind-surf and kite-surf there except through public launch corridors; no La Pineta-specific corridor document is published.

Numana: the long version, the launch and the rules

    More on Numana

The beach is long small-pebble shingle, the water aquamarine, and Monte Conero stands over the whole bay. Northerlies are the most reliable wind, usually around 10-15 knots, and the stretch is rideable in almost any direction, which is why it reads as a relaxed light-wind beach rather than a performance one. Water is chop and small waves, not flat. A strong north-easterly builds shorebreak, and that is the day to leave the beginner board in the car. June, July and August fill the sand with ordinary beach users, and the Ancona maritime compartment runs marked launch corridors through the bathing season, so where the corridor sits matters more than the forecast. Come in May or September for the wind without the umbrellas.

    Getting on the water

Long pebble/shingle beach south of Numana, opposite Numana Blu campsite.

    If it goes wrong

Nothing kite-specific has been confirmed. Numana carries the Blue Flag and the Green Flag and runs lifeguard cover on the town beaches through the bathing season, but no cover has been documented for the kite stretch opposite the campsite, and the corridor rules put riders 500 m offshore in season. The Italian coast guard answers emergencies on 1530.

    Rules and access

2026: in the Ancona maritime compartment the bathing season runs 1 May to 20 September 2026. Under the local navigation ordinances, n. 26/2023 on limits for pleasure craft and n. 36/2023 on recreational navigation, kitesurf and windsurf must stay at least 500 m from the shore during the season and reach the water only through the marked launch corridors, taken perpendicular to the beach at minimum speed in displacement trim. Motor craft are held to 10 knots in the permitted zones and 8 knots inside 500 m of the shore. Confirm the position of the current authorized kite corridor at Numana or Marcelli before launching in summer.

What riders say

5 recurring claims

  1. Numana is the spot people get emotional about: riders call the Conero side beautiful enough to justify extra driving when it is on.

    consensus×5 riders

  2. The legal kite corridor is a necessity more than a polished club: riders mention umbrellas in the wrong place, no permanent services and people rigging among beach users.

    majority×4 riders

  3. Wind is not sold as clockwork; riders talk about checking live data, bringing big gear and taking the good days when the Adriatic turns on.

    majority×4 riders

  4. Porto Potenza and La Pineta look more like practical Adriatic locals' spots than travel magnets, with wave breakers and boats shaping where beginners should go.

  5. Access rules around Numana have confused visiting riders for years: sometimes it is a membership area, sometimes a loose donation, sometimes just ask first and be polite.

History & trivia

Scene & life

  • Porto Recanati and Porto Potenza Picena both sit on the site of Potentia, a Roman colony founded around 189-184 BCE; excavated remains include a Temple of Jupiter, a covered market and mosaic-floored houses.
  • Numana has Piceni-era roots and was later a Greek trading post ('emporium') before Roman rule; its Regina di Numana tomb is a notable archaeological find.
  • Porto Potenza Picena's historic core grew around a 16th-century watchtower built as defence against pirate raids.

Itinerary idea

Base at Porto Recanati or Civitanova for train access and services, and treat Numana as a day or half-day trip for the light-wind spot and the Conero scenery.
