Porto Potenza Picena is an open Adriatic beach on the Marche coast, and the documentation on it is thin. The water is flat to choppy and tide independent, with NNW and SSE both arriving sideshore.
The count is 227 days a year with usable wind, but the strong months are January, March and December, so this is a winter stop rather than a summer one. The beach is medium and sandy, with toilets, food and a car park, and a wave breaker to keep clear of.
The 2026 bathing-safety ordinance covering Civitanova Marche, Potenza Picena and Porto Recanati reserves the first 300 m from shore for bathers through the season and bans kite transit inside it except through public launch corridors, and whether Porto Potenza Picena has one of those corridors is unconfirmed. Local rescue cover for independent kiters is unconfirmed.
Beginners have nothing to gain here; an intermediate rider working down the Marche coast in winter does.

Typical strength

Monthly averages of 7-12 kt: 12 kt in January-February, 10 kt in March and November, 11 kt in December.

Clean water and flat-to-choppy conditions; no wind-quality rating is available.
January, March and December rate as the strongest months. The count of 227 days per year with wind uses a minimum threshold of 4 Bft/12 kt and excludes thermal wind, so treat it as indicative.

The quiver, in words

No local size guidance has been published. Indicative only, worked back from the 12 kt threshold behind the local wind-day count: a 75-85 kg rider is on 13-15 m when the wind is barely making that count, 11-12 m through the mid-teens, and 9-10 m once it reaches the low twenties.

Direction to shore

NNW and SSE are reported as sideshore.

Dominant direction

NNW and SSE sideshore; wind-direction data for this spot is otherwise limited.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from weather reanalysis on a 10–25 km grid (2022-2024), not a ground station: reliable for trade and synoptic winds, understates thermal sea breezes and valley winds. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Standing depth

Not measured for this beach. The district rule does hand you a marker to read off the sand: through the bathing season every frontage must flag the safe-water limit - where the bottom reaches 1.00 m - with white buoys or a sign, or else post that the limit is unmarked. How far the shallow band actually runs at Porto Potenza Picena, and whether the wave breaker sits inside or outside it, is unconfirmed.

Rescue

Nothing here is set up for kiters. Through the bathing season the district rule puts a lifeguard on each bathing establishment's frontage and on the municipality's free beaches, a minimum of eight continuous hours a day from 10:00 to 18:00, longer where the place opens longer, with the hours posted on a sign at the entrance.
Behind that lifeguard sits a lookout platform at least 2 m above the sand, a red rowing rescue boat marked SALVATAGGIO, a rescue can or tube, 300 m of floating rescue line on a reel, binoculars, mask and fins; a rescue board, a SUP or a jetski may be added to that but never swapped in for the boat.
Outside the season there is no cover and the beach has to post a sign saying so. Kite instruction in the water needs a support boat sitting near the students, ready to help. At sea, call 1530 or 112. The Civitanova Marche Coast Guard office is on 0733 810395 and the Porto Recanati beach detachment on 071 4605033.

Launch

Hazards riders report 5

  • summer beach users
  • wave breaker
  • 300 m bathing zone in season unless using authorized corridors
  • no lifeguard cover at all outside the bathing season, and the beach is only obliged to warn you with a sign
  • no launch corridor confirmed on this frontage, so crossing the bathing strip in season depends on the water being empty of swimmers
Rules & access
2026: the Civitanova Marche bathing-safety ordinance, n. 11 of 9 May 2026, covers Civitanova Marche, Potenza Picena and Porto Recanati. Through the bathing season - third week of May to third week of September, which the Marche region may shift by a week either way - the first 300 m from the shoreline is reserved for bathers and closed to the transit of surf, windsurf and kitesurf; its outer edge is marked with red buoys 50 m apart. Launching and landing happen only through public launch corridors, and swimming inside a corridor is itself prohibited. The corridors are specified by the district's boating regulation, ordinanza n. 8 of 23 April 2025. Minimum age 16. Daylight only, sunrise to sunset, with fair weather and visibility. A flotation aid worn at all times: lifejacket, floating harness or floating wetsuit. A kite-only corridor runs 300 m out, 30 m wide at the beach and widening to 80 m by the 150 m mark, edged with orange buoys 20 m apart over the first 150 m and 50 m apart beyond, red buoys at the 150 m line, and 80 cm outer buoys reading CORRIDOIO RISERVATO AI KITESURF - VIETATA OGNI ALTRA ATTIVITA, with the same wording on a sign at the water's edge. Whoever holds the authorisation must keep a first-aid kit, a VHF for the Coast Guard on channel 16, and a boat able to recover a kitesurfer. A corridor takes two riders at once, one going out and one coming in. Where a free beach has no corridor at all, you may still cross the bathing strip when no bathers are in the water, on a course as near perpendicular to the shore as you can hold and with the kite down. Corridors are authorised case by case by the municipality on the Coast Guard's opinion, and no ordinance lists which Porto Potenza Picena frontages hold one, so check on the sand.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Find out whether a launch corridor is open before you ride in the bathing season; inside 300 m is bathers only (2026).
  • Aim at January, March or December: the monthly averages sit at 12 kt in January-February, 10 kt in March, 11 kt in December.
  • Read the 227-days-a-year wind figure loosely, because it counts a minimum of 4 Bft/12 kt and leaves thermal wind out.
  • Give the wave breaker a wide berth on the way out and on the way back in.
  • Come by train to Porto Potenza Picena if you are travelling light; the beach is a short walk from the station side.
  • With no corridor, cross the bathing strip only when there are no swimmers in the water, straight out, kite low.
  • Lifeguard hours run 10:00 to 18:00 as a minimum in season and stop entirely outside it; the times are on a sign at the beach entrance.
  • Riding here outside the bathing season is the simplest option, which is convenient because the strong months are January, March and December anyway.
