Portonovo is a bay under Monte Conero, just south of Ancona, and the water changes character with the name of the wind. Scirocco from the southeast gets reinforced by a Venturi effect off the Conero and, in summer, lays the bay out flat and lake-like: that is the freestyle and freeride day.
Ostro from the south, in spring and summer, brings chop and small waves instead. The beach is stones, not sand, and the launch and landing area is medium sized, with kite lessons and launching based near the Capannina. No tide to plan around.
The rules are the hard part here. Ancona bathing-safety ordinance n. 27/2026 applies from 1 May to 20 September 2026 and keeps navigation and anchoring outside 300 m except through marked launch corridors, with Conero-coast derogations to 100 m on specified stretches, while ordinance n.
26/2023 pushes kite navigation to at least 500 m from shore in the bathing season unless a corridor is used. In June, July and August the bay is full of beach users, and nothing confirms this as a beginner spot.

Character

thermal

fills in: It fills around lunchtime and runs to sunset. Mornings are rarely worth rigging for.

Typical strength

15 to 30 knots on the E/SE base that this bay works on, from around midday to sunset.

A Conero Venturi effect reinforces thermal Scirocco and usually gives good summer freestyle and freeride conditions.
Spring and summer are the best of it, with May through September the usable window. Other beach users are the limiting factor in June, July and August.

The quiver, in words

No local size table. Indicative for a 75-85 kg rider across the 15-30 knot band the bay works in: 12 m at the bottom of it, 9 m through 18-22 knots, 7 m once the Scirocco is properly funnelling at 25 and up.

Direction to shore

The bay opens to the east and north-east under Monte Conero, and E through SE is the base direction here: it blows in off the water, side-onshore, with the headland funnelling the Scirocco so it lands stronger than the general forecast suggests. Ostro from the south comes in more along the beach and roughens the water. West and north-west blow off the land, over the Conero.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from the operational forecast archive at 1.5–7 km (2023-2024), daylight hours only, not a ground station: it resolves thermal, lake and valley winds far better than coarse reanalysis but still tends to understate a strong local thermal. A windy day has at least three consecutive daylight hours at 12 knots or more. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Rescue

No kite rescue boat. Under the 2026 Ancona bathing-safety ordinance the beach concessions and the Comune have to run an assistance and lifesaving service through the season: at least one qualified assistente bagnanti per 150 m of beach front, a minimum of eight continuous hours a day from 10:00 to 18:00, with the periods and hours posted at the beach access.
At sea, call 1530 or 112. The nearest Coast Guard offices are the Capitaneria di Porto in Ancona on 071 227511, staffed round the clock, and the Ufficio Locale Marittimo in Numana on 071 7360377.

Launch

Stony beach in the bay of Portonovo under Monte Conero, with a medium launching and landing area; lessons and rentals are run from the Capannina bathing establishment, open 09:00 to 19:00 in season. Two named riding spots sit in the bay, the water off the little church of Santa Maria and Spiaggia della Torre.

Rules & access
2026: Ancona's bathing-safety ordinance, which replaces ordinance 21/2025, defines the bathing season as the third week of May to the third week of September, with the Marche region able to shift either end by a week; the separate lifeguard obligation runs 1 May to 30 September. Inside the season the band of water 300 m off the shoreline is reserved for bathing, and surf, windsurf and kitesurf may not cross it; craft have to leave and return through the public launch corridors. On the stretch running south from the line drawn off the little church of Santa Maria di Portonovo to Spiaggia dei Sassi Neri, where the cliffs drop straight into the sea, that reserved band is cut to 100 m. Ordinance 26/2023 on local navigation limits applies alongside it, and is reported to push kite navigation out to 500 m during the season unless a corridor is used; that figure was not checked against the 26/2023 text.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Find out whether a marked corridor is open before you ride between 1 May and 20 September 2026.
  • Wear boots or reef shoes: the launch is stones, not sand.
  • Save the flat sessions for Scirocco; when Ostro is on, expect chop and small waves.
  • Park by La Capannina and walk the gear down to the bay.
  • Stay off the water at peak bathing hours in June-August unless a local school has cleared the access.
  • Find out whether a marked corridor is open before you ride in the bathing season, the third week of May to the third week of September 2026.
  • Rig for the afternoon: the E/SE base fills around midday and runs to sunset at 15-30 knots.
  • Put 1530 and the Numana coastguard office, 071 7360377, in your phone before you go on the water.
  • Know where the Santa Maria church line falls: south of it the reserved band shrinks to 100 m, north of it you are held out to 300 m.
