Miyakojima
Japan's most popular subtropical kite/beach island - turquoise water and powder-white sand, genuinely resort-developed compared to the mainland spots, but still low-key outside Hirara town. Suits riders wanting a proper warm-water island holiday within Japan, with typhoon risk as the main tradeoff.

What nobody tells you first
- No ferry to/from Okinawa main island since 2008 - flying is the only option.
- August-September typhoon season can cancel flights and inter-island transport with little notice.

- Miyako jofu, a hand-woven ramie textile, traces its production back to the Tensho period (1573-92).
- The Paantu festival sees men dressed in mud and leaves smearing mud on houses, cars and people for protection and luck.
