Playa del Saler & Playa de la Patacona

advancedgear rental

2 spots · 2 schools

These are two very different beaches bracketing Valencia: El Saler sits inside the protected Albufera Natural Park south of the city, with pine-backed dunes and almost no settlement of its own, while La Patacona in Alboraya is an urban beach neighbourhood minutes from the city centre by metro.
Both work best as day spots from a Valencia city base rather than as a stand-alone kite destination — and both are explicitly described as bad choices in summer.

Good to know before you go3

  • Both beaches are explicitly flagged as bad or crowded in summer — treat this as a shoulder-season/storm-season pairing, not a summer one.
  • El Saler has no marked kite launch channel and almost no independent infrastructure — plan it as a day trip from Valencia, not a base.
  • At La Patacona, the used launch is the north end near the campsite, not the whole beach.

Playa del Saler: the long version, the launch and the rules

    More on Playa del Saler

Riders use the sand in front of an old sea defence, with N, NE, E, SE and S all navigable on this east-facing coast. There is no marked channel and summer is heavily enforced, so summer is not the season. What works is autumn and winter north-wind storms, when the beach picks up waves and the bathers are gone. A balised channel for El Saler was denied in 2023 and denied again in 2024, on Albufera Natural Park and Natura 2000 grounds: dune and shorebird habitat. Skip it if you are learning or want a dependable holiday beach. Take it as an off-season wave option for intermediate and advanced riders, with Perellonet, Cullera or Sueca as the fallback.

    Getting on the water

Riders launch from the sand in front of an old sea defence. The beach either side is a long open arenal with dune and pinewood behind it and no marked channel anywhere along its length.

    If it goes wrong

Cover on the sand exists only inside the bathing season. In the 2024 campaign that ran 1 June to 15 September, 10:30 to 19:00, with an extra half hour either side, from 10:00 and until 19:30. Inside that window El Saler has three watchtowers, three first-aid posts, an ambulance and a beach police patrol spread along the arenal. Outside those dates nothing is staffed, which is precisely the autumn and winter storm season the spot is ridden for.

    Room to rig

Big. About 2,700 m of fine sand between L'Arbre del Gos to the north and La Garrofera to the south, dunes and pine forest behind it, public parking and a bike lane at the back.

    Rules and access

2023: the Albufera Natural Park technical management office refused authorisation for a summer balised nautical-sports channel at El Saler and El Perellonet, citing Natura 2000 dune and shorebird habitat, after an unauthorised session of roughly 67 kites was seen disturbing birds. 2024: authorisation for a balised channel in the maritime-terrestrial zone of El Saler was refused again. 2025: there is still no marked channel at Playa del Saler, summer is heavily enforced, and summer riding is not recommended.

Playa de la Patacona: the long version, the launch and the rules

More on Playa de la Patacona

Navigable directions: N, NE, E, SE, S. There is no marked channel. Summer is the wrong time to come, since the sand fills with people and the wind is often thin, so the useful stretch is autumn into winter, when the beach is empty and the chop and small waves are worth the drive. Alboraya's 2026 beach notice prohibits launching sliding boards outside marked channels or authorised nautical activity areas, and no marked channel here has been confirmed, so read the signage before you unroll lines. The water is tide-independent and the launch area itself is big. This is a local off-season session near the city, not a trip destination and not a place to learn.

    Getting on the water

The kite area is at the north end of Patacona, in front of the camping, with a long, wide sandy beach and a big launch area.

    If it goes wrong

Lifeguards and a sea rescue service, seasonal. In 2026 that is 1 May, then the Saturdays and Sundays of May, then continuously from 1 June to 6 September, staffed 10:30 to 19:30 at Patacona, with a new lifeguard post on the beach, 22 lifeguards, four boat skippers and a coordinator, two ambulances with nurses and emergency technicians, a jet ski, quads and drones. The autumn and winter months this spot is actually ridden in have none of it; offshore trouble goes through 112.

    Room to rig

Big sandy beach, but reduced practical space when beach users are present.

    Rules and access

2026: Alboraya's beach notice bans sport and recreational navigation of any craft or floating device, sail or motor, inside the bathing zones except in duly authorised and buoyed areas, and prohibits beaching or launching craft and sliding boards outside channels or lanes specifically reserved and marked for them, or outside authorised and signed nautical-activity areas. Navigation is to stay more than 200 m off the shore and within a mile of the coast, and any crossing of the bathing zone goes through a channel or authorised area at no more than 3 knots. No marked kite channel at Patacona has been confirmed, which leaves the bathing season without a clean legal launch here. The season with lifeguard service runs 1 May, the weekends of May, then 1 June to 6 September, 10:30 to 19:30.

Getting there & around

  • Valencia Airport (VLC), in Manises, about 8 km west of the city centre
Car needednot for Patacona, which is metro-connected; a car is more useful for El Saler
TransfersMetrovalencia lines 3 and 5 run from the airport to the city centre in about 15 minutes. El Saler is reached from the city via the CV-500 road or EMT bus lines 24/25. La Patacona/Alboraya has its own metro stations (Alboraya-Palmaret and Alboraya-Peris Aragó, Line 3) plus municipal buses.

Seasons beyond windEl Saler is described as badly overcrowded and not recommended in summer; La Patacona is similarly called out as crowded with little wind in summer, with autumn-winter as the better window for both. Valencia city itself has mild winters and hot, dry summers, so the shoulder seasons suit sightseeing better than peak August heat.

What riders say

4 recurring claims

  1. El Saler is real but complicated: people like the space and east-sector thermals, yet the summer legality and protected-beach setting keep coming up.

    consensus×5 riders

  2. Summer is the awkward season near the city: thermal wind may happen, but beach users, missing channels and enforcement make riders look farther south or north.

    consensus×5 riders

  3. Patacona is the convenient city option, but the public questions are mostly about whether it is allowed and where a beginner should actually take lessons.

    majority×4 riders

  4. Outside peak beach season, El Saler gets mentioned for north storms and waves; Patacona reads flatter and more urban, with chop and small waves rather than a destination wave spot.

Scene & life

VibeValencia city's own nightlife and social scene rather than a kite-specific one; the Patacona/Malvarrosa beachfront has a lively chiringuito (beach-bar) scene in summer, while El Saler is quiet and nature-focused
Must try
  • paella valenciana — its documented origin traces to the rice-farming communities around the Albufera lagoon next to El Saler, and it is still traditionally served as a Thursday lunch dish across Spain
  • horchata (orxata) and fartons from Alboraya, home of the tiger-nut (chufa) crop used to make it
Activities
  • boat trips and birdwatching on the Albufera freshwater lagoon next to El Saler
  • the Ciutat de les Arts i les Ciències (City of Arts and Sciences)
  • Valencia's historic centre and Central Market
  • the Turia Gardens, laid out in the city's old dry riverbed
Day trips
  • an Albufera lagoon boat tour
  • Port Saplaya, a canal-front "little Venice" neighbourhood next to Patacona
Pairs witha Valencia city break built around museums, tapas and — if timed for March — Las Fallas
Kite + workValencia is an established digital-nomad city with the usual coworking/coliving infrastructure, though none of it is kite-specific

Las Fallas, Valencia city's UNESCO-listed March festival

History & trivia

Scene & life

  • A 1968 development plan intended to line El Saler's dunes with hotel blocks, an airport and a horse-racing track; construction stalled in 1974, and much of the dune cord and pine-forest habitat has since been restored — one of Spain's earlier successful environmental campaigns against coastal development.
  • El Saler's 18th-century hunting lodge, the Casa de la Demanà, inspired Vicente Blasco Ibáñez's 1902 novel Cañas y Barro.

Itinerary idea

Base in Valencia city, drive out to El Saler when the wind/swell window is right, use Patacona as the easy metro-accessible option, and save the paella and Albufera boat trip for a flat day.
