On the clock

13:00 · 20:00

Two different clocks. The summer sea breeze is the one with a schedule, building through the early afternoon and holding into the evening, roughly 13:00 to 20:00 across the Valencia beaches. The autumn and winter N gradient that makes this end of the beach worth riding has no daily cycle: it can be up at dawn or gone by lunchtime. Nothing Patacona-specific is confirmed.

The marks are the clock times the record names, laid on a 24-hour day. The bar between the first and the last covers those hours; it is not a promise of wind.

Patacona is the urban beach immediately north of Valencia harbour, and the kite end is the north end, in front of the camping. Navigable directions: N, NE, E, SE, S. There is no marked channel.
Summer is the wrong time to come, since the sand fills with people and the wind is often thin, so the useful stretch is autumn into winter, when the beach is empty and the chop and small waves are worth the drive.
Alboraya's 2026 beach notice prohibits launching sliding boards outside marked channels or authorised nautical activity areas, and no marked channel here has been confirmed, so read the signage before you unroll lines. The water is tide-independent and the launch area itself is big.
This is a local off-season session near the city, not a trip destination and not a place to learn.

Typical strength

15-25 knots for the May-September SE thermal season, though Patacona summer can be complicated by crowds and little wind.

Better in autumn and winter; summer thermal winds can work more broadly around Valencia, but beach crowding and restrictions are limiting.
Autumn into winter is the season. The N tramontana runs from the end of summer well into spring, the sand is empty and the water is worth the drive; when it comes with a storm it brings waves onto an open beach. Summer is the wrong time here, thin wind and full sand.
An April-to-October best window also circulates and the two do not agree.

The quiver, in words

For 75-85 kg, indicative and regional rather than measured here: 12 m around 15 kt, 9-10 m by 20 kt on the summer thermal, 7-8 m for the harder autumn and winter N days.

Direction to shore

E is onshore; NE and SE are side-onshore; N and S are cross-shore on this east-facing coast.

Dominant direction

Navigable directions: N, NE, E, SE, S. The wind that made the north end a spot is the N tramontana, which blows hardest north of Valencia city from the end of summer through to well into spring.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from the operational forecast archive at 1.5–7 km (2023-2024), daylight hours only, not a ground station: it resolves thermal, lake and valley winds far better than coarse reanalysis but still tends to understate a strong local thermal. A windy day has at least three consecutive daylight hours at 12 knots or more. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Rescue

Lifeguards and a sea rescue service, seasonal. In 2026 that is 1 May, then the Saturdays and Sundays of May, then continuously from 1 June to 6 September, staffed 10:30 to 19:30 at Patacona, with a new lifeguard post on the beach, 22 lifeguards, four boat skippers and a coordinator, two ambulances with nurses and emergency technicians, a jet ski, quads and drones.
The autumn and winter months this spot is actually ridden in have none of it; offshore trouble goes through 112.

Launch

The kite area is at the north end of Patacona, in front of the camping, with a long, wide sandy beach and a big launch area.

Space

Big sandy beach, but reduced practical space when beach users are present.

Rules & access
2026: Alboraya's beach notice bans sport and recreational navigation of any craft or floating device, sail or motor, inside the bathing zones except in duly authorised and buoyed areas, and prohibits beaching or launching craft and sliding boards outside channels or lanes specifically reserved and marked for them, or outside authorised and signed nautical-activity areas. Navigation is to stay more than 200 m off the shore and within a mile of the coast, and any crossing of the bathing zone goes through a channel or authorised area at no more than 3 knots. No marked kite channel at Patacona has been confirmed, which leaves the bathing season without a clean legal launch here. The season with lifeguard service runs 1 May, the weekends of May, then 1 June to 6 September, 10:30 to 19:30.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Rig at the north end in front of the camping, not in the middle of the promenade.
  • Read the Alboraya beach signage first: the 2026 notice bans launching outside marked or authorised areas.
  • Come in the autumn and winter months. June, July and August are people, not wind.
  • Keep clear of the mole and the breakwater at the harbour end.
  • If the beach is busy, walk away; there is no channel keeping bathers off your lines.
