Garbi

13:00 · 15:00 · 20:00

The SE Garbi normally sets in between 13:00 and 15:00 and runs to about 20:00 in high summer. Mornings are usually too light to rig.

The marks are the clock times the record names, laid on a 24-hour day. The bar between the first and the last covers those hours; it is not a promise of wind.

Playa del Pollo is the kite name for the El Dosel and Mareny de Sant Llorenc side of Cullera, a natural beach with dune cordons on the edge of the Albufera Natural Park.
The Garbi, the SE thermal, reportedly comes in stronger here than at the Valencia beaches because of how this shore is turned, and that is what people drive down for on summer afternoons. Riders use the central part of the beach, away from the bathers; E and NE work too.
Chop to small or medium waves over sand, with no tide to plan around. The catch is legality: as of 2025, summer kiting around Valencia is prohibited outside named zones, and Playa del Pollo does not clearly sit among them, even though an official kite zone with a 200 m entry and exit channel is reportedly marked here too.
No municipal text has turned up either way, so between June and September ask on the beach before you pump. It is quiet, it is isolated, and outside the lifeguard season there is nobody coming to get you.

Character

thermal

fills in: The SE Garbi normally sets in between 13:00 and 15:00 and runs to about 20:00 in high summer. Mornings are usually too light to rig.

Typical strength

15-25 kt once the Garbi is established, with 14-20 kt the everyday working band. 28-30 kt happens but is rare.

The thermal reportedly comes in stronger here than at the Valencia spots nearby because of how the beach is oriented. Summer afternoons are the reason to come.
Summer thermals are the highlight. The Garbi needs land heat: it forms once air temperatures pass about 25 C, which makes it a May-to-September wind blowing most afternoons between roughly 13:00 and 20:00, strongest from June through August.
June to September delivers under high pressure on Spain's east coast about 70% of the time, and April through October is the wider window. Off-season riding works, especially on N, NE and E, but rescue cover and legal status are murkier then.

The quiver, in words

For a 75-85 kg rider, 9-11 m covers the 15-20 kt Garbi afternoon, 7-8 m handles the days it tops out near 25 kt, and 12-13 m earns its place early in the thermal or in April and October. Indicative rather than a local quiver survey.

Direction to shore

Onshore to side-onshore on the SE Garbi, which is the wind that makes the spot; E and NE also come in onshore. N and S run roughly along this north-south shore. Derived from the coastline orientation rather than from a local measurement.

Dominant direction

N, NE, ENE, E, SE, S

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from the operational forecast archive at 1.5–7 km (2023-2024), daylight hours only, not a ground station: it resolves thermal, lake and valley winds far better than coarse reanalysis but still tends to understate a strong local thermal. A windy day has at least three consecutive daylight hours at 12 knots or more. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Boardshorts or swimsuit in summer; wetsuit from fall to spring, with a full wetsuit in winter.

14–29°C water
Mediterranean sandy beach on the Cullera / El Dosel-Mareny de Sant Llorenc shore. El Dosel and Mareny de Sant Llorenc are low-occupation natural beaches with fine sand and dune cordons in the Albufera Natural Park; the water is chop to small or medium waves with a sandy bottom.

Your level

Rescue

VHF channel 16

A lifeguard tower with surveillance and a first-aid post covers the El Dosel and El Dosser section during the bathing season, and the beach carries a Blue Flag. That is bather cover, not kite rescue. Outside the season nothing is manned and the beach is isolated, so check coverage on the day.
Spain's general emergency number is 112; sea rescue answers free on 900 202 202 and on VHF channel 16.

Launch

Riders use the central part of the beach, where it is free of bathers. El Dosel runs 1,800 m long by about 50 m wide, fine golden sand with a dune cordon behind it and no buildings; Mareny de Sant Llorenc to the north is 2,500 m by 45 m and more isolated still. The launch is large at El Pollo and medium with plenty of sand at El Dosser.

Space

Open sandy beach: 1,800 m of El Dosel plus 2,500 m of Mareny de Sant Llorenc, both rated low occupation. Room is not what limits you here; where you are allowed to rig is.

Hazards riders report 10

  • unmarked legal status in summer, unconfirmed
  • naturist beach users
  • summer legal status is contradictory across sources
  • naturist beach users nearby
  • isolated natural beach sections with limited services
  • possible chop and waves late in the day or on storm days
  • riding zones or entry/exit channel should be respected if marked
  • No shade, no drinking water and no services on the natural sections
  • Nothing is manned outside the bathing season, and the beach is a long way from help
  • Beach closed to the public from 05:00 to 08:00 during cleaning
Rules & access
2025-2026: kitesurfing in Cullera is legal only inside zones the town council has enabled, and the council can enable them only with prior authorisation from the Demarcacion de Costas de Valencia. The municipal beach ordinance also lets the council fix the hours, the period and the exact space for the activity, and requires the strip between the waterline and the first line of the beach to be kept clear for passage. Where a beach carries no marked channel, the bathing zone is the 200 m band off the shore: craft must cross it perpendicular to the beach at under 3 knots, and where marked entry and exit channels do exist they are compulsory, with swimming and diving banned inside them. In practice, summer kiting around Valencia is restricted to named zones, which are Club Barraquetes Vent, Club Boatkite at Playa de Motilla and the public Perellonet channel; Playa del Pollo is separately called a very good summer spot, ridden in the central area, and is also described as having an official kite zone with a 200 m entry and exit channel and no lessons from June to September. No municipal or Costas document naming Playa del Pollo has been found either way. Beach cleaning runs 05:00-08:00 at El Dosel and public access is closed during it.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Look for a marked channel before rigging; if there is none, think twice between June and September.
  • Ride the central section and stay well clear of the bathers and of the naturist stretch.
  • Bring water and shade. This part of the sand has nothing on it.
  • Ask locally about the legal zone in summer rather than assuming the kites already up are legal.
  • Plan your own rescue outside the lifeguard season, and do not ride alone here.
  • Save 112 and 900 202 202 before you drive down. Outside the bathing season nobody is watching this beach.
  • Do not turn up before 08:00 in season: the beach is closed for cleaning from 05:00.
