On the clock

13:00 · 20:00

The SE thermal normally fills in around 13:00 and holds until about 20:00, May to September. Regional Valencia timing, not confirmed at this beach.

The marks are the clock times the record names, laid on a 24-hour day. The bar between the first and the last covers those hours; it is not a promise of wind.

Motilla is a school beach first. Almost everything documented about it is the Boatkite operation on the Sueca coast: courses run inside a buoyed and delimited school zone on Playa de Motilla, with boat-based lessons leaving El Perello marina for a large offshore practice area.
Club Boatkite at Playa de Motilla is one of the places where kiting is allowed in summer while other Valencia-area beaches are closed to it, and that permission is most of what the spot is worth. The beach itself is short, 300 m long and 39-49 m wide, so there is little room outside the marked zone.
Wind is the standard Valencia summer pattern, the SE Garbi thermal, roughly 12-25 kts across the region and usually building from late morning or early afternoon; nothing measured at Motilla itself was found. Whether an independent visiting rider can use the channel without going through the club is unconfirmed, so make contact before planning a day around it.
Beginners and improvers get a real spot here; advanced riders get a small box.

thermal

fills in: The SE thermal normally fills in around 13:00 and holds until about 20:00, May to September. Regional Valencia timing, not confirmed at this beach.

Typical strength

15-25 kts is the figure usually given for the summer SE thermal; a slightly wider 12-25 kts also circulates. Both are regional Valencia ranges, indicative, with nothing measured at Motilla itself.

This is a regulated school and club area rather than an open performance spot. The summer SE thermal is regular across the wider Valencia region.
Club Boatkite at Playa de Motilla is one of the summer permitted areas. Most courses take place in the marked school zone at Motilla, while boat courses use El Perello marina and a large offshore practice area.

The quiver, in words

For a 75-85 kg rider: 12 m when the thermal first fills around 15 kts, 9 m through the usual 18-22, 7 m on the strongest 25 kt afternoons. Derived from the regional summer range, indicative, with no local session data behind it.

Direction to shore

The summer SE thermal arrives cross-onshore on this east-facing stretch of the Sueca coast. Derived from the shoreline orientation, not measured.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from the operational forecast archive at 1.5–7 km (2023-2024), daylight hours only, not a ground station: it resolves thermal, lake and valley winds far better than coarse reanalysis but still tends to understate a strong local thermal. A windy day has at least three consecutive daylight hours at 12 knots or more. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Rules & access

Rider tips

  • Contact Boatkite before turning up; the school zone is theirs to run.
  • Ask for the current buoy layout and whether independent riders are accepted.
  • Take a first lesson inside the marked school zone rather than launching elsewhere on the Sueca beaches.
  • Ask about a boat session out of El Perello if the beach zone is crowded or unsuitable.
  • Plan for June, July or August; boardshorts or a shorty cover the water in summer.
