Garbi

Afternoon. The windows given are 13:00-20:00, or a Garbi that builds from late morning and peaks 14:00-18:00.

The marks are the clock times the record names, laid on a 24-hour day. The bar between the first and the last covers those hours; it is not a promise of wind.

El Perellonet is where Valencia city riders go when the sea breeze fills in. The Kitezone area sits south of the gola, the mouth at the end of the Albufera channel, and gets used through the year, with N, NE, E, SE and S all listed as navigable.
The wind that matters is the SE thermal, called Garbi or Llebeig, and it is an afternoon wind. The published rules for the balised channel are strict and easy to break by accident: valid insurance, in and out through the marked channel only, 3 knots maximum inside it, and riding outside it at 200 m from shore.
In 2024 a summer kite area in the south beach sector was authorised from 1 July to 15 September with supervised afternoon use. Authorisation here is not routine, because the beaches sit against the Albufera and its Natura 2000 protection; in 2023 the nautical-sport channels for El Saler and El Perellonet were refused for the summer before the practice was allowed inside the park area.
Beginners should book a school rather than improvise around bathers in a narrow channel. Come in May or September if you want the thermal without the beach being full.

Typical strength

15-25 knots in the May-September SE thermal season; 12-20 knots is the other figure given for Garbi.

The afternoon thermal is steady enough for freeride. In winter, low-pressure systems leave the sea rough.
Spring and summer thermals run April/May through September/October. The only official channel dates found for Perellonet are summer-only.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from the operational forecast archive at 1.5–7 km (2023-2024), daylight hours only, not a ground station: it resolves thermal, lake and valley winds far better than coarse reanalysis but still tends to understate a strong local thermal. A windy day has at least three consecutive daylight hours at 12 knots or more. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Standing depth

Fine sand shelving out gently, with calm shallow water a long way off the beach - the reason this stretch is used as a family bathing beach. No measured wading distance is published, so treat it as indicative. In practice the depth question barely applies to riding: the rules push you outside the channel and 200 m off the shore, well past anywhere you could stand.

Tides

Tide does not matter here. The Valencia beaches are treated as tide independent.

Temperature

25.2°C summer · 14.6°C winter

Wetsuit

Open Mediterranean beach at the Gola del Perellonet. The Kitezone area is south of the mouth and is used year-round; the small public channel is seasonal and exists for access and exit, with the riding done outside it.

Your level

The official channel is for controlled access and exit, not for riding. Between summer bathers, the narrow channel and the rule to stay 200 m off the beach, a beginner needs a school or a supervised session.

Rescue

VHF channel 16

During the authorised summer season the kite area is supervised daily from 14:30 to 19:30 and a designated safety officer checks occupancy against the safety criteria. The beach itself is listed with a municipal lifeguard service in the bathing season. No kite rescue boat is documented.
Outside those hours and outside that season there is nothing dedicated: the emergency call from the beach is 112, or Salvamento Maritimo on 900 202 202, and VHF channel 16 from the water.

Launch

Kitezone sits on the south side of the desembocadura, with the balised Perellonet kite area in the southern beach sector.

Space

The beach in the wider Perellonet area is wide, but the public Canal Kite El Perellonet itself is small.

Hazards riders report 10

  • small summer channel

  • small seasonal access channel
  • 3 knot speed limit in the marked channel
  • must navigate outside the channel at 200 m from shore
  • environmentally sensitive Albufera / Natura 2000 surroundings
  • possible chop or small bump-and-jump waves when Garbi strengthens
  • the legal window is re-granted every year and has been refused before, so a summer trip can arrive to no authorised zone
  • seabird disturbance in the Albufera is the argument used against the channels, so uncontrolled kiting outside the zone is what puts the permit at risk
Rules & access
Authorisation here is granted season by season, not once and for all. The 2016 rules for the balised El Perellonet kite zone: valid liability insurance, entry and exit through the marked channel only, 3 knots maximum inside it, no jumps or risky manoeuvres in the channel, gear collected off the sand when not in use, navigation outside the channel respecting 200 m from the shore, and no bathing in the channel while it is in use.
Life vest and helmet are recommended. In 2024 the kite channel was authorised in the south sector of the beach, just north of the Gola del Perello, from 1 July to 15 September, supervised 14:30-19:30, with a federated sports licence or valid liability insurance required to use it; the same 14:30-19:30 supervised kite zone and licence-or-insurance requirement ran again in 2025. In 2023 the Albufera natural park office refused the El Saler and El Perellonet channels for that summer before nautical sport was allowed inside the park area at all. Nothing had been published for 2026 when this was compiled.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Check this year's channel authorisation before you plan a summer session; the permit is granted season by season.
  • Use the channel to get in and out at 3 knots or less, then ride outside it and past 200 m from shore.
  • Carry your federated licence or liability insurance on the beach during the regulated season.
  • Turn up for the afternoon. Garbi builds from late morning at best and does its work between 14:00 and 18:00.
  • Clear your kit off the sand when you are not riding; leaving it out breaks the beach rules.
  • Supervision of the kite zone has run 14:30-19:30 in both 2024 and 2025, so a morning arrival buys you nothing but parking.

FAQ

When is the best time to kite at El Perellonet?

April to October is the main thermal window, with the SE Garbi typically building in the afternoon and peaking between 14:00 and 18:00.

Is El Perellonet suitable for beginners?

The marked channel is meant for controlled entry and exit rather than free riding, so beginners should use a school given the narrow channel and summer bathers.

Are there rules or restricted zones?

Riders need valid liability insurance, must enter and exit through the marked channel at a maximum 3 knots, and must ride outside the channel at 200 m from shore; a 2024 notice authorized summer kiting from 1 July to 15 September with supervision.

What is the wind like?

The SE thermal, called Garbi or Llebeig, typically blows 12-25 knots depending on the source, alongside N, NE, E and S directions listed as navigable.
