Afternoon. The Garbi usually comes in between 14:00 and 15:00, sometimes closer to noon, and runs to sunset. It blows onshore E-SE for two or three hours, then swings cross-shore and often finishes cross-off southerly in the evening.

The spot

Location and wind

The riding at Oliva Nova is really Playa Rabdells and the Oliva Nova/Aigua Morta stretch, not the point most databases pin. The wind that matters is the warm-season Garbi/Llebeig thermal: E-SE in the afternoon, often around 16-20 knots, with 12-30 knots reported near Oliva Nova Golf and about 20 knots on a good day.

Water and season

Fine sand, dunes, flat to choppy Mediterranean water, small waves or waist-high sets when the thermal or a stronger NE pushes, and no tide to plan around. Treat it as a spring-to-mid-September or April-to-October destination; it is not a November-April winter spot, and for winter westerly terral you go to Punta Molins in Denia instead.

Regulations

Summer riding is governed by the authorized kite zone and corridor, and the 2026 bathing-season rescue service covers only the listed dates, from 11:00 to 19:00. Outside those dates there is no municipal cover at all, which matters here more than the paperwork does.

The wind

locals call it Garbi and Llebeig thermal; occasional NE; winter terral winds occur but Denia/Punta Molins is the preferred spot for those.

Old Rabdells station statistics, from observations between 2011-07-01 and 2015-01-31, give an annual average of NE 8 knots with 12-knot gusts. Those figures are stale, and current Rabdells statistics are not available.

Typical strength

16-20 knots on a normal thermal afternoon. Summer afternoons near Oliva Nova Golf cover 12-30 knots, and about 20 knots is the good-day figure.

Best on sunny spring-summer thermal days; July-August can be less steady and has the highest beach-user pressure.

The season is spring to mid-September on E-SE thermals. June-September is the strongest stretch for Oliva Nova, June-October brings sunny-day thermals, and April-October also comes up as the best months. Oliva can be ridden all year, but the spring-summer thermal is the draw, and winter terral winds are better at Punta Molins in Denia.

During the 2026 bathing season, Oliva's municipal beach decree provides lifeguard and rescue service from 11:00 to 19:00 on the listed bathing-season dates. The summer kite club zone reportedly has a rescue boat and a zone controller. Outside the official bathing-season dates the 2026 decree states there is no municipal lifeguard, rescue or first-aid service.

2026: there are authorized kitesurf areas in Oliva, mainly at Oliva Nova, plus a specific kitesurf area at Playa Rabdells; in summer and bathing season, navigation outside the authorized zones is prohibited.

Bathing season

2026: Oliva's bathing-season decree sets the season as 30 Mar-13 Apr, 6-7 Jun, 13-14 Jun, 20-30 Jun, 1 Jul-31 Aug, 1-6 Sep, and the weekends 12-13, 19-20 and 26-27 Sep, with municipal lifeguard and rescue from 11:00 to 19:00 on those dates and no municipal lifeguard, rescue or first-aid service outside them.

School lessons

Since the 2018 PATIVEL coastal-landscape rules, kite schools may not run lessons on the natural beaches of the Valencian Community, which is why the authorized local school teaches offshore from a boat under Direccion General de la Marina Mercante, Capitania Maritima, federation and municipal approvals; ask any school for its current-year authorization.

For private riders no permit, club registration or insurance requirement is confirmed for 2026, and the rule that bites is the authorized-zone one during bathing season. The exact limits of the authorized zone are not published; find the buoys and the club controller on the day.
