modelled
A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. What it holds here is the month's average wind, month by month; it does not count how many days carry a three-hour window at 12 kt.

Good to know before you go3
- Shark-attack risk is a real, locally acknowledged issue on Recife's central urban beaches immediately south of this cluster — a reason this whole area sits further north.
- Itamaracá's hotel infrastructure is limited — book ahead, especially in the September–February high season.
- Reaching the island by public bus needs a transfer at Igarassu — budget extra time versus driving.
The spots
Pontal de Maria Farinha
Pontal de Maria Farinha is a lesson spot, not a destination.
intermediateIn seasonno month named for this spot
The model here carries the month's average wind rather than a count of windy days: it reaches 12.1 kt in July, the strongest month it models for this spot.
Pontal de Maria Farinha: the long version, the launch and the rules
More on Pontal de Maria Farinha
The pontal sits where the Rio Timbó meets the sea on the Paulista coast north of Recife, 40 minutes from the airport, and the schools use Marina do Pontal on Rua Tejipió as the meeting point; the school supplies the gear (kite, board, harness, vest, helmet) and an instructor in the water. The wind is the Recife SE, about 9 knots on the airport average, which is why foils turn up here and why there is no confirmed strong-wind month. Everything about the riding is tide-driven: the usable water and the current at the river mouth both move with it, and nobody has measured how hard that current pulls. Boats come and go from the marina and bathers use the same beach. Water is 26-28 C, no wetsuit. If you already ride and want a proper session, this is not the place to plan a trip around; it is where Recife riders bring people for a first lesson with Escola Kitesurf Recife or Vila do Kite.
Getting on the water
Kite-school meeting point at Marina do Pontal, Rua Tejipió, Maria Farinha, with beach/pontal access nearby.
If it goes wrong
Lessons come with an instructor plus helmet and vest. Riding independently there is no rescue on record.
Room to rig
Unknown. People clearly rig and ride here; nobody has written down where or how much room there is.
Rules and access
No Paulista municipal ordinance naming kitesurfing was found. What governs the water is the Pernambuco port-captaincy norms: where bathers are present, sail-driven craft must keep off the line of breaking waves, a limit of 100 m in the 2001 edition of those norms; the 2021 revision superseded that edition and its current text could not be read in 2026, so treat 100 m as the floor and not the confirmed figure. The practical constraints at the point are the marina channel and the Rio Timbó mouth, both worked by boats.
Itamaracá Kite Point
Itamaraca Kite Point is the kite beach on Praia de Sao Paulo, Ilha de Itamaraca, north of Recife, and it runs around the IKP Kite School and its events.

More on Itamaracá Kite Point
The water is flat and shallow, under 1 m in places and 1-2 m elsewhere, and at low tide it is smooth enough that a first lesson should be booked for it. The wind is the trade wind, E on average, with N and NE the directions people ride; July through October are the strong months, July to November the season, and the climate record has the windy stretch running late May into early January with August the windiest. Do not expect it to nuke. Monthly means sit around 10.7-11.4 kt from June to November and the kites in use are 9-14 m. The 2023 Iron Macho kitetrip started from here because the island has regular kite practice, calm water and steady wind. Water is 26-29 C all year, so shorts and a lycra. Municipal kite rules, a standing rescue service and the exact rigging area have not been confirmed; the school is on Rua Desembargador Angelo Vasconcelos Filho by Restaurante Coco Louco, and that is where you ask.
Getting on the water
School/event launch at Itamaraca Kite Point on Praia de Sao Paulo; IKP is located at Rua Desembargador Angelo Vasconcelos Filho, s/n, Praia de Sao Paulo, near Restaurante Coco Louco.
If it goes wrong
No standing rescue service confirmed. The 2023 Iron Macho start had more than 20 water and land support staff, but that was for the event.
Room to rig
school and event beach launch; exact public rigging area and swimmer separation unconfirmed

Events
Iron Macho kitetrip expedition, which has used Itamaracá as a starting point (2023 edition: ~35 riders, 27 days, ~1,700 km across six northeastern states)
History & trivia
- Forte Orange, built by the Dutch in 1631, is described locally as the largest fortification in northeastern Brazil.
- Igarassu's Igreja de São Cosme e São Damião, begun in 1535, is considered by Brazil's national heritage institute (IPHAN) the country's oldest Catholic church.
- Itamaracá was chosen as the starting point of the 2023 edition of the Iron Macho kitetrip expedition — about 35 riders launching a 27-day, ~1,700 km, six-state trip across Brazil's Northeast — partly because it let the group avoid shark-risk waters closer to Recife.
