The location and tides

Atins is a fishing village at the mouth of the Rio Preguicas, on the edge of the Lençóis Maranhenses dunes, and it works as a kite base rather than a stop on a dune tour. The riding runs on the tide: as the water drops, sandbanks come out and leave shallow flat lagoons, and as it fills, the bay and the ocean edge turn to chop and waves.

Season and wind

The season is usually put at July to January or July to December, with E-ENE-NE trades in the 15-30 kt band. Beginners learn standing up on the shallow banks with a local school, but the river channel, the high-tide chop, the fishing boats and the distance from everything make a first solo trip here a poor idea.

The lagoons

The thing nobody mentions: the rainwater lagoons inside Lençóis are fullest roughly June to September, so the fullest lagoons and the best wind are not the same weeks.

Getting there and conditions

Getting in is part of the trip, a flight to Sao Luis, road to Barreirinhas, then boat down the river or 4x4 along the beach. Warm water, no wetsuit, deep sand streets, thin phone signal.

Getting on the water

The launchYou launch off Atins beach and the sandbanks around the Rio Preguicas mouth. Low tide exposes more sand and opens the flat water; high tide takes the beach and the bank shape away and moves the riding area, so time the launch with the tide and with what the schools tell you that morning.

If it goes wrongNo public lifeguard or rescue service is confirmed. Schools and organised downwind operators run their own support, and self-rescue is taught locally for a reason: help is a long way off.

Park rules

2026: inside Parque Nacional dos Lencois Maranhenses, ride under the current park visitor-ordering and access rules and with authorised local support. A 2026 ordering table permits kitesurf and surf in some park beach sectors and water sports at selected attractions, while vehicle access runs through authorised routes and operators.

The park covers 156,608 hectares and was recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2024; visitation is governed by its management and public-use plans and by accredited visitor guides. No separate 2026 municipal kitesurf permit or beach-zoning rule for Atins was found.
