Good to know before you go1
- Praia do Vao is one of only two beaches in Vigo where kitesurfing is allowed at all, and summer teaching there is impractical because of bathers -- treat it as an off-season city spot, not a summer beach.
The spots
Praia do Vao
Praia do Vao is a conditional kite spot on the Atlantic-facing city coast of Vigo, and one of the two Vigo beaches where kitesurfing is possible at all.

The model here carries the month's average wind rather than a count of windy days: it reaches 12.5 kt in March, the strongest month it models for this spot.
Praia do Vao: the long version, the launch and the rules
More on Praia do Vao
It faces west and works in NW and W, with N and NE also among the working directions. Winter is the season. Summer sessions happen occasionally, but teaching there in summer is impractical because of the bathers. The beach is 800 by 45 m of fine sand with parking, showers, toilets, a bar and bus access. The municipal ordinance is the part to read before you go: kitesurf and similar craft must launch, land and stay inside signed areas, and cannot navigate in bathing zones or within 200 m of shore except through duly marked channels. Water stays cold, around 17-18 C in summer and 13 C in winter. What is still missing is any map of a current signed channel at O Vao, and anything on how the tide changes the launch.
Getting on the water
Fine grey-white sand in the Vao inlet, closed by the Toralla causeway breakwater to the southwest and a small rocky point shared with O Baluarte to the east. The beach runs 800 by 45 m with several level and adapted accesses along its length, wooden walkways laid over the sand in summer, showers, foot-washes, toilets, seasonal kiosks from 1 June to 30 September and several medium car parks. A dune cordon under regeneration sits behind the sand.
If it goes wrong
Lifeguards, a first-aid post and rescue cover run 15 June to 15 September. In June and September that means Monday to Friday 16:00-20:00, and 12:00-20:00 at weekends and public holidays; in July and August it is 12:00-20:00 every day. Outside those dates and hours nobody is watching the water. The beach also has a public-address system and marked bathing buoys. Nothing kite-specific is arranged.
Room to rig
wide beach but constrained by bathers in summer
Rules and access
2020: Vigo's Ordenanza municipal reguladora do uso e desfrute dos areais, approved by the Concello's Pleno on 9 September 2020, prohibits launching, landing, beaching or keeping kitesurf, windsurf and paddle-surf craft outside signed zones, and prohibits navigation by unauthorized craft within 200 m of shore or in bathing zones except through duly marked channels. That remains the municipal rule in 2026. The dune belt and beach are also the ENIL Complexo Duna e Areal do Vao-Baluarte, declared by the Orden of 29 September 2020 published in DOG 217, so keep kites and gear off the dune vegetation and cross on the walkways.
Praia de Cesantes
Praia de Cesantes sits inside the Ensenada de San Simon, the sheltered bay north of Vigo, and it is one of the better thermal beaches in Galicia.

Praia de Cesantes: the long version, the launch and the rules
More on Praia de Cesantes
The wind is a southwest thermal at around 280 degrees, and it wants about 18+ knots before the session is worth the drive; the season runs February to mid-October. Water is flat. At low tide standing-depth areas open up and the beach itself gets very spacious, which is why the schools teach here, and high tide takes back both, so check the table first. Northeast wind arrives over land and is gusty. Fishing boats lie anchored in the bay and summer brings beach users. School boats support lessons, but rescue for an independent rider is unconfirmed.
Getting on the water
Launch off the sand at Cesantes, inside the Ensenada de San Simon: an arenal of about 2.4 km with a promenade and a restored dune strip behind it. At low tide the beach is very spacious.
If it goes wrong
Boat-assisted lessons run from Cesantes; rescue for independent riders is unconfirmed.
Room to rig
large at low tide; reduced by tide and summer beach use
Rules and access
No municipal or federation kitesurf zone, permit or ban for Praia de Cesantes was found for 2026. What does bear on the beach: the Ensenada de San Simon is a Natura 2000 site, and there is a protected dune strip under restoration behind the sand, so rig on the open arenal and stay off the dunes. Redondela's own beach page records frequent organised nautical activity here in both winter and summer and posts no kite restriction.

What riders say
5 recurring claims
Cesantes is the dependable local teaching-and-freeride answer: shallow flat-to-chop water, afternoon thermals and usable summer months show up across sources.
consensus×5 riders
O Vao is the city-beach option, not the everyday summer choice; riders and schools describe it as mainly winter or occasional summer, with bathers dominating high season.
consensus×4 riders
Cesantes has a real local race and event scene, so it is not just a lesson lagoon; on event weekends the water can feel organised and busy.
consensus×4 riders
The place is beginner-friendly by kite standards, but the bay is not empty; people warn casual beachgoers to keep distance when the kites are up.
majority×3 riders
Tide and beach shape matter at Cesantes more than the postcard view suggests; at some states the water is far away or the beach gets small.
