Praia do Vao is a conditional kite spot on the Atlantic-facing city coast of Vigo, and one of the two Vigo beaches where kitesurfing is possible at all. It faces west and works in NW and W, with N and NE also among the working directions. Winter is the season.
Summer sessions happen occasionally, but teaching there in summer is impractical because of the bathers. The beach is 800 by 45 m of fine sand with parking, showers, toilets, a bar and bus access.
The municipal ordinance is the part to read before you go: kitesurf and similar craft must launch, land and stay inside signed areas, and cannot navigate in bathing zones or within 200 m of shore except through duly marked channels. Water stays cold, around 17-18 C in summer and 13 C in winter.
What is still missing is any map of a current signed channel at O Vao, and anything on how the tide changes the launch.

Character

synoptic

Mainly a winter beach, with summer sessions only when conditions and beach use allow.
Ridden habitually in winter and occasionally in summer. Summer lessons at O Vao do not work because of the bathers.

Strength

No knot figure is published for this spot.

Direction to shore

NW and W are the working directions, with N and NE also given for this beach and neighbouring Samil. SW is offshore here: anything that goes wrong drifts you out across the ria toward Cangas, which is why nobody teaches on it.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from weather reanalysis on a 10–25 km grid (2022-2024), not a ground station: reliable for trade and synoptic winds, understates thermal sea breezes and valley winds. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Tides

Low tide adds about a third to the beach surface, so the launch is far wider then and closes up again on the flood. How the tide stage changes depth or current for kiting is not documented.

Temperature

18°C summer · 13°C winter

Wetsuit

Cold Atlantic water: a full wetsuit is normally appropriate; summer water averages around 17-18 C and winter around 13 C.

14–19°C water
A west-facing city beach at Vigo: fine sand, clear cold Atlantic water, full services. It gets ridden in winter and only now and then in summer, when beach use and conditions allow.

Your level

Lessons happen when conditions line up, but summer is crowded and no dedicated kite zone is confirmed. Treat it as an intermediate and advanced city beach unless a local school is running the session.

Rescue

Lifeguards, a first-aid post and rescue cover run 15 June to 15 September. In June and September that means Monday to Friday 16:00-20:00, and 12:00-20:00 at weekends and public holidays; in July and August it is 12:00-20:00 every day. Outside those dates and hours nobody is watching the water.
The beach also has a public-address system and marked bathing buoys. Nothing kite-specific is arranged.

Launch

Fine grey-white sand in the Vao inlet, closed by the Toralla causeway breakwater to the southwest and a small rocky point shared with O Baluarte to the east. The beach runs 800 by 45 m with several level and adapted accesses along its length, wooden walkways laid over the sand in summer, showers, foot-washes, toilets, seasonal kiosks from 1 June to 30 September and several medium car parks. A dune cordon under regeneration sits behind the sand.

Hazards riders report 8

  • many bathers in summer
  • no dedicated nautical sports/kite zone published for summer
  • cold Atlantic water
  • urban beach obstacles and other beach users
  • must use marked channels/zones where applicable under Vigo beach ordinance
  • SW is offshore and the drift runs across the ria toward Cangas
  • protected dune complex behind the beach
  • no lifeguard cover outside 15 June to 15 September, and afternoons only in June and September
Rules & access
2020: Vigo's Ordenanza municipal reguladora do uso e desfrute dos areais, approved by the Concello's Pleno on 9 September 2020, prohibits launching, landing, beaching or keeping kitesurf, windsurf and paddle-surf craft outside signed zones, and prohibits navigation by unauthorized craft within 200 m of shore or in bathing zones except through duly marked channels. That remains the municipal rule in 2026. The dune belt and beach are also the ENIL Complexo Duna e Areal do Vao-Baluarte, declared by the Orden of 29 September 2020 published in DOG 217, so keep kites and gear off the dune vegetation and cross on the walkways.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Do not assume summer access: check the signed channels and how full the sand is before you rig.
  • Wear a full wetsuit; the water is around 17-18 C even at the end of summer.
  • Aim at winter and shoulder-season frontal days rather than crowded beach afternoons.
  • Take bus L10 or L11 from Vigo if you are not driving; the beach has its own parking.
  • Talk to a Vigo school if you are learning or unsure how the ordinance is applied on the day.
  • If the sand looks tight, wait for the ebb. Low water gives back about a third of the beach surface.
  • Treat SW as a no-go direction here. It blows straight offshore and the ria takes you toward Cangas.
  • Lifeguard cover only exists 15 June to 15 September, and in June and September only from the afternoon.
