The Otres people go looking for has largely been cleared: the beach-side huts are gone, a road has been paved the length of the coastline, a large unfinished development sits inland, and there is essentially nowhere on the beach to sit.

Riders who actually travelled to Sihanoukville to kite found nothing to ride — no wind and no kite activity at all, across separate visits including one in March.

The reason is geography, not luck: Kampot sits in a funnel between Phu Quoc and the 1,800 m Bokor massif, and the open coastline around Sihanoukville simply gets less of that wind.

Advertised conditions and lived conditions do not line up: listings still sell November-to-March kiting here at about $50 an hour or $300 for three days, against first-hand visits that produced no rideable wind.

When is the best time to visit Otres?
Dry season, roughly November to April, brings the clearest water and busiest tourist period; wet season (May-October) brings heavier rain but fewer crowds.
Where should I base myself?
Otres 1 has cheap-to-mid guesthouses and late-night bars within walking distance; Otres 2 is quieter and more spread out, better for calm evenings.
Do I need a car?
Not for Otres itself, which is a walkable beach strip, but tuk-tuk or moto is the norm for reaching Sihanoukville town or Ream National Park.
Any transport hazards to know about?
Sihanoukville's tuk-tuk drivers are known for price-fixing, especially at the airport, so agree the fare before getting in.
