Souk el Guebli (El Kantara) & Smile Beach (Sidi Smaël)

lagoonbeginner-friendlygear rentalbudget

2 spots · 6 schools

Djerba pairs two kite lagoons on opposite sides of a UNESCO-listed desert island — Souk el Guebli near Aghir on the south side, Smile Beach at Sidi Smaël in the north tourist zone — with an old Tunisian island culture of pottery villages, a 2,500-year Jewish community, and Homeric lotus-eater legend.
It suits riders who want warm, shallow, current-free lagoon conditions alongside a genuinely different, low-key North African island holiday; it is not a nightlife-driven destination, and the two lagoons sit far enough apart that picking a side matters.

Good to know before you go4

  • The Tunisian dinar cannot legally be taken in or out of the country — exchange on arrival, keep the receipt, and reconvert before departure.
  • Ride-hailing apps (Uber, Bolt) do not work on Djerba as of a 2024 check — rely on taxis or rentals.
  • Souk el Guebli (south, Aghir/El Kantara) and Smile Beach (north, Sidi Smael) sit on opposite sides of the island — a single-base trip likely means picking one lagoon over the other.
  • El Ghriba synagogue was the site of a 2023 mass shooting — worth being aware of before including it as a day-trip stop.

The spots

  1. Souk el Guebli (El Kantara)

    lagoon · beginner ok

Souk el Guebli is the lagoon on the south side of Djerba, by the El Kantara causeway near Aghir, and it has nothing to do with Smile Beach up on the north coast.

Souk el Guebli (El Kantara): the long version, the launch and the rules

More on Souk el Guebli (El Kantara)

The base is Plage Soug El Guebli, where Kite Aventure has its club and the beach runs hard-packed for kilometers. The water is why you come: very large, shallow, flat over sand and hard-packed sand, standable almost everywhere, with room to ride well away from anyone else. It suits learning, flat-water hours and downwinders; there are no waves and no beach scene. Reported lagoon size runs from 18-30 sq km to 32 sq km to 40 sq km, and the maximum depth is given as anything between 1.3 m and 1.5 m. Wind accounts split the same way, NE thermal side-on in some, W/NW in others, the W/NW carrying the local name Couchant; Djerba-wide the common band is 12-20 kt, so pack the bigger kites. May to September is the window usually given for this lagoon, against March to November for the island as a whole. Fishing nets and small boats are the everyday hazard, the causeway end runs more current, and the hard bottom in the shallows punishes a flat landing.

    Getting on the water

A wide beach at Plage Souk el Guebli near Aghir and the causeway that links Djerba to the mainland, sandy to hard-packed. Schools sit on it, and self-launch areas are reported alongside them.

    If it goes wrong

Rescue boats go out with Kite Aventure lessons and with its downwind and raid trips, which also run a motorboat and an assistant. Rescue crews or lifeguards are reported on the beach beside the established schools, Les Dauphins included. Nothing covers an independent rider out in the middle of the lagoon, so the school you rig next to is the whole plan.

    Room to rig

big to huge, with lots of hard-packed sand and several kilometers of beach/space

    Rules and access

A beach-use fee of 5 was reported in 2025, currency unstated, and reportedly charged even to people who were not kiting; whether it is still taken in 2026, and whether it is municipal or an operator's charge, is unconfirmed. Self-launching from the public beach is elsewhere described as free, with the paid option being access to a school's set-up and services. No municipal kite rule was found, so ask on the beach before you rig.

Smile Beach (Sidi Smaël): the long version, the launch and the rules

More on Smile Beach (Sidi Smaël)

The lagoon covers 32 sq km of shallow, smooth water over soft sand, with no current and a sand strip separating it from the open sea. That is learning water and freestyle water. It is tide dependent, though: high tide is what you want, low tide goes very shallow, and the launch, a private 300 m beach, runs 10-50 m wide depending on tide and wind direction. The wind story is contested. Winter and spring bring frontal westerlies, summer brings a thermal easterly 4-5 days a week, and the best-season claims do not agree with each other. Bring big kites, because 12-20 kt is the common band and July-September is the lightest stretch. The school has run in Tunisia since 2003, and this is a school-and-resort setup rather than a remote strip, busiest in July and August.

    Getting on the water

Private, equipped sandy beach at Globalkite/Smile Beach on the north-shore lagoon, about 5 km after Houmt Souk toward the tourist zone.

    If it goes wrong

Rescue and lifeguard cover is on the spot at the school beach. Instructor supervision on the water comes bundled with courses and with the supervised rental package; riders arriving on their own gear are expected to check in at the centre first.

    Room to rig

large; a 300 m long launch is reported that varies from 10-50 m wide with tide and wind direction

    Rules and access

2026: beach access is free, with no permit and no fee. The centre works the lagoon as zones: the teaching area is marked, beginners have priority inside it, and visitors are expected to introduce themselves at the centre before going out. No municipal or seasonal restriction was found.

Getting there & around

  • Djerba-Zarzis International Airport (DJE), served by Tunisair and charter airlines; taxi to Houmt Souk center runs about DT20 (2026)
Car neededNot strictly — taxis are metered and reasonably priced, and bike/moped rental runs about DT20/day (2026) — but ride-hailing apps (Bolt, Uber) do not work on Djerba, so plan on taxis or rentals rather than an app.
TransfersA causeway (the historic El Kantara crossing, giving Souk el Guebli's spot name its second half) connects the island to the mainland; buses from Tunis cost about DT26.75 (2026) including the crossing. There is no rail on the island — the mainland line ends at Gabes, about 70km away, from where onward travel is by bus or shared van plus a short ferry.

What riders say

5 recurring claims

  1. The lagoons are genuinely forgiving for first waterstarts: shallow, mostly flat, and big enough that riders do not describe fighting for space.

    consensus×6 riders

  2. The schools get good marks for patient coaching and organisation, especially at the north lagoon, but the positive chatter is mostly from lesson reviews rather than independent forum debates.

    consensus×5 riders

  3. The wind is not a hard-blowing brochure machine; summer and September can mean light afternoon thermals and bigger kites.

    majority×4 riders

  4. Seaweed is the thing beginners mention after the trip, because dropped kites can become hard to relaunch when light wind and low water put weed near the surface.

    majority×3 riders

  5. Self-guided exploring around the island is less tidy than the kite-camp version: some beaches have trash, long algae, fishing nets, and stray dogs.

History & trivia

Scene & life

  • Djerba is speculated to be Homer's island of the lotus-eaters from the Odyssey.
  • The island's Jewish community, centered on the El Ghriba synagogue, claims over 2,500 years of continuous residence; Djerba's settlement pattern was recognized in a 2023 UNESCO World Heritage listing.
  • At 514 sq km, Djerba is North Africa's largest island, administratively part of Medenine Governorate.

Itinerary idea

Pick a side of the island to base on — south for Souk el Guebli/Aghir, north for Smile Beach/Sidi Smael and Houmt Souk — exchange only what's needed in dinars, and use flat days for Guellala pottery, Houmt Souk's old town, or a desert excursion.

FAQ

Yes - both lagoons are shallow and sheltered; Souk el Guebli's club describes water suitable for beginners and experts alike, and Smile Beach's lagoon is shallow, sandy and current-free for learning.

What is the water like?

Both spots are flat lagoons rather than open sea - Souk el Guebli sits near the El Kantara causeway in the southeast, and Smile Beach is a 32 sq km shallow lagoon on the north side at Sidi Smaël.

Are there kite schools?

Yes - Kite Aventure operates at Souk el Guebli, and Globalkite has run its school at Smile Beach since 2003.
