Torre Canne & Monopoli Capitolo

beginner-friendlygear rental

2 spots · 4 schools

A stretch of Puglia's Adriatic coast between Fasano and Monopoli with genuine windsurf/kite infrastructure - Lido Bamboo at Monopoli Capitolo bills itself as having the region's biggest indoor windsurf center - set against Trulli country, a Messapian-Roman archaeological site and a century-old thermal spa.
It works well as one leg of a wider Puglia holiday (food, small medieval towns, countryside) rather than a kite-only destination, and both beaches see heavy peak-summer crowds.

Torre Canne: the long version, the launch and the rules

    More on Torre Canne

In that wind it is polyvalent: it works for waves, for slalom and for speed. Low pressure brings the swell, summer thermals bring ordinary freeride days, and the water swings between flat and choppy with 0.5-2 m waves once the wind is properly up. Fine sand, clear water, no tide to plan around; at Pilone 2 the beach is undeveloped, with a medium launch area and room to spread out. Rocks in the water are the thing to check before you go in, and from June through August you share the sand with everybody else. The best winds land in the shoulder months: March, April, May, September, October, November. Skip August, and leave Lido Bizzarro alone in summer whatever the forecast says. Nobody has published beginner-friendly teaching conditions at this launch, so arrive already riding.

    Getting on the water

Lido Bizzarro and Lido Macchia Mediterranea sit just south of Torre Canne; take Macchia Mediterranea, and stay off Lido Bizzarro in summer. The Pilone 2 beach is undeveloped sand with a medium launch and landing area, natural surroundings and plenty of room.

    If it goes wrong

No dedicated kite rescue, and nothing at all on the undeveloped stretch at Pilone 2. Such cover as exists is the lifesaving service the beach concessions must run through the 23 May to 13 September 2026 bathing season, to the maritime authority's rules, in the opening hours each one declares on the sign at its entrance. The shoulder months that give the best wind here fall outside that window. At sea the number is 1530, the Coast Guard blue number, or 112.

    Room to rig

Medium at Pilone 2; wider than many beaches outside August.

    Rules and access

The Puglia regional bathing ordinance for 2026 sets the bathing season from 23 May to 13 September 2026, following the national window fixed by D.L. 73/2025 (converted as L. 105/2025). Through that period, 24 hours a day, the sea within 200 m of beaches and low rocks is reserved for bathing, 100 m off cliffs, unless the local maritime authority sets a different limit, so crossing it under a kite means using a launch corridor. Setting up and maintaining those corridors for public use is the coastal municipality's job, to the specification the competent maritime authority lays down; municipalities may also let concessionaires install one in front of their own beach for rental and recreational or sporting activities. A strip at least 5 m wide from the waterline must stay clear of umbrellas, loungers, boats and gear, reserved for free transit, and can be cut to 3 m only on narrow beaches and only with the maritime authority's binding opinion. Bathing-water quality monitoring runs 1 May to 30 September 2026. No Torre Canne-specific corridor map is confirmed.

  2. Monopoli Capitolo

    sea · beginner ok

Capitolo is the Adriatic coast south of Monopoli, around Lido Bamboo, and it gets a lot of wind.

    intermediateadvanced

    In seasonSep to May

The model here carries the month's average wind rather than a count of windy days: it reaches 13.4 kt in January, the strongest month it models for this spot.

Monopoli Capitolo: the long version, the launch and the rules

    More on Monopoli Capitolo

Maestrale is the workhorse at 10 to 25 knots and builds waves up to about 1.5 m; Scirocco comes off the land and lays the water flat. Strong northerlies push well past that and turn it into a demanding day, so read the forecast before you commit to the drive. The shoreline is mixed sand and rock, which means where you walk in matters more than where you park. September to May is the season; summer is freeride water and the sea is warm. Schools work this beach and the ordinary wind range is friendly enough for lessons, though the rock sections and an offshore Scirocco are two reasons to go out with somebody who knows the entry. No Capitolo-specific kite corridor or summer rule is published, and the 2025 Monopoli maritime district boating regulation only requires that any corridor be authorized.

    Getting on the water

Launch south of Monopoli around Capitolo/Lido Bambu. Exit SS16 at L'Assunta-Capitolo, follow Capitolo for about 1.5 km to the beach; the spot is on the north side of the pier.

    If it goes wrong

Nothing on the beach. The 2025 district rules put the safety burden on the rider instead: lifejacket worn throughout, a line cutter on you, a quick release you have tested, and schools carrying full responsibility for the gear they hand out, with the maritime authority explicitly disclaiming liability. In an emergency call 112 or the free 1530 blue number. The Coast Guard office for this stretch is at Largo Fontanelle 12/a in Monopoli, 080 9303105.

    Rules and access

2025: the boating regulation for the Monopoli maritime district, which runs the coast between Polignano a Mare and Monopoli and so covers Capitolo, sets out what kiting here is allowed to look like. You may ride in daylight only, from an hour after sunrise to an hour before sunset, further than 200 m from the coast and inside one nautical mile of it. During the bathing season, launching and landing must happen inside an authorised corridor: 30 m wide at the waterline, widening symmetrically to 80 m at 100 m out and holding that width to 200 m, edged by orange buoys no more than 20 m apart with white flags and a sign at the sea entrance reading RISERVATO AL TRANSITO KITESURF - VIETATA OGNI ALTRA ATTIVITA. Inside the corridor you go out and come back by body-drag as far as 100 m from the waterline, one kite at a time in that first stretch, priority to whoever is coming in. Minimum age is 16, a lifejacket must be worn the whole time, and you must carry something that cuts lines plus a working quick release. Lines get connected only at launch and disconnected on landing, and a kite left on the beach must have one side disconnected and the lines wound on the bar. Kiting is banned inside ports and near their entrances, on port approach routes and in anchorages, in ship arrival and departure zones, within 100 m of navigation marks, dive floats, fishing gear or anything fixed to the seabed, at river and canal mouths, and within 200 m of merchant vessels or 300 m of military ones. No Capitolo-specific corridor authorisation is published, so which stretch of this beach is legally a launch corridor is still unknown.

Car neededEffectively yes - the beaches (Lido Bizzarro/Macchia Mediterranea at Torre Canne, Lido Bamboo at Monopoli Capitolo) sit outside the town centers.
TransfersFasano has its own train station. Bari airport is about 9 km from Bari's center and has had its own rail station since 2013 on the Ferrotramviaria network, but that line runs toward Barletta, not south toward Fasano/Monopoli, so onward travel to these spots needs a car, taxi or the separate southbound regional line.

Seasons beyond windTorre Canne swings from around 10,000 summer-autumn visitors to roughly 400 winter-spring residents, so late spring/early autumn is a much quieter way to hit the same beaches.

What riders say

5 recurring claims

  1. Capitolo/Lido Bambu is comfortable but pricey, and the beach-club costs can feel out of proportion if you came mostly for the water.

    consensus×7 riders

  2. Lessons based out of Lido Bizzarro get unusually safety-heavy praise; several learners say the instructor moved spots when conditions were better elsewhere instead of forcing the lesson there.

    consensus×5 riders

  3. The water at Lido Bambu is not the clean sandy postcard some first-timers expect; several beach users mention rocks or needing to move sideways for a better swim.

    majority×4 riders

  4. Torre Canne is more of a spring and autumn bet than a peak-summer kite trip; summer can work, but the better logged months sit outside July and August.

    majority×3 riders

  5. The launch around Pilone 2 has real room by Puglia standards, but it is still treated as an expert spot because rocks are part of the water risk.

History & trivia

Scene & life

  • Torre Canne takes its name from a 16th-century Saracen-watch defensive tower, demolished after WWII; its thermal waters were historically known as "Acque di Cristo."
  • Monopoli grew from a 5th-century-BC Messapic fortress into a major medieval port between Bari and Brindisi that thrived during the Crusades.
