Tremestieri & Il Pilone

advancedgear rental

2 spots · 5 schools

Two Messina Strait spots on Sicily's northeastern tip, about 19 km apart by road: Tremestieri is a summer thermal-wind spot right at the edge of Messina city, while Il Pilone sits at Capo Peloro/Torre Faro, the scenic point where the Tyrrhenian meets the Ionian.
This is real-city kiting, not a resort strip — good for riders happy to base in an actual Sicilian town and drive to the wind, not for anyone expecting a beach-club scene or a dedicated kite village.

Good to know before you go2

  • Il Pilone is described locally as advanced-only: even a light breeze can intensify sharply funneling through the Strait, with gusts reported up to 40+ knots — not a spot to learn on
  • Tremestieri's beach is pebbled and the water is not especially clear near the ferry-port side

Tremestieri: the long version, the launch and the rules

    More on Tremestieri

The wind that defines it is the local Grecale, the grecalotto that Messina calls vento Cavaliere: a north to north-east thermal squeezed and accelerated by the Strait. From May to September it gives 12-20 knots, and July and August are the steadiest months, when high pressure sits over the region. It usually comes up through the morning, peaks between noon and 17:00, then weakens in the evening, though the right pressure difference keeps it going after dark. Water is flat to choppy with small waves, over a shore of sand and pebbles. What makes the spot technical is not the wind but the current and the ferry traffic between Messina and Reggio Calabria. Ratings conflict: the same beach gets called fine for any level and gets called advanced, and this record treats independent beginners as unsuitable. In 2026 the Messina bathing rules keep the first 200 m of sea for swimmers from 09:00 to 19:00, so you launch through a conforming corridor or you do not launch.

    Getting on the water

Beach on the Tremestieri waterfront south of Messina, with parking along the coastal road and access from SS114 south of Messina. It is a medium launch area on a pebble beach with grass behind.

    If it goes wrong

Lifeguards are reported on the beach; their hours, and whether they watch kiters at all, stay unconfirmed. The mandatory cover window used on this coast is 09:00 to 19:00 in high summer, inside a bathing season that runs 1 May to 31 October. The sea emergency number is 1530, free from any phone and answered by the Coast Guard. Rig for self-sufficiency regardless: the Strait current moves a swimmer faster than anything launched from the beach can react to.

    Rules and access

2026: no bathing-safety ordinance for the Messina maritime district, the one that actually governs Tremestieri, is published, so the local corridor layout is unconfirmed. The Sicilian bathing season runs 1 May to 31 October. The regime applied along this coast reserves the sea within 200 m of the shore for swimmers from 09:00 to 19:00, requires lifeguard cover on those hours between the third Saturday of May and the third Sunday of September, and allows kites through only inside a marked launch corridor at least 40 m wide at the shore and 100 m wide 100 m out, entered and left by body drag. Treat that as the shape of the rule here, not as confirmed local text.

  2. Il Pilone

    sea

Il Pilone is the beach under the old electricity pylon at Capo Peloro, the north-eastern corner of Sicily where the Ionian and the Tyrrhenian meet.

In seasonno month named for this spot

The model here carries the month's average wind rather than a count of windy days: it reaches 12.6 kt in March, the strongest month it models for this spot.

Il Pilone: the long version, the launch and the rules

    More on Il Pilone

Scirocco is the wind, and the Strait does something to it: a soft forecast can arrive as 40 knots on the water. The current is the other half of the problem, because Capo Peloro is crossed by very strong flows that do not care what you are riding. Descriptions of the beach disagree, fine to coarse pebbles with the bottom dropping away immediately, or sand with small to medium waves, and both versions leave you out of your depth within a few steps. Freestyle and wave riding go on through the year. Beginners should not be here, whatever an any-level tag suggests elsewhere. Nobody has confirmed rescue cover or a current kite-specific rule for the sea launch, so ride with someone who could come and get you.

    Getting on the water

Beach around the old electricity pylon at Capo Peloro/Punta del Faro, reached by car with a short walk.

    If it goes wrong

No dedicated cover sits on this beach. Messina KiteSurf, which uses the spot, runs a rescue boat, but the boat is based at Tremestieri on the far side of the city and cover at Il Pilone is unconfirmed. The Italian coast guard answers emergencies on 1530.

Getting there & around

  • Catania Fontanarossa, roughly 96 km / about 1.5h drive from Messina
Car neededYes. Tremestieri and Il Pilone are separate points on the coast (about 19 km apart) and are not walkable from each other or well linked by transit for kite gear.
TransfersTremestieri's launch is just below the 'Messina Sud-Tremestieri' interchange, reached via the A20 motorway Boccetta exit. Messina's port is one of Europe's busiest passenger ferry terminals (over 8.2 million crossings in 2021), with car ferries and hydrofoils running the Strait to Villa San Giovanni and Reggio Calabria on the mainland.

What riders say

4 recurring claims

  1. Il Pilone is repeatedly framed as the hard Messina option: strong Strait current is the thing first-timers underestimate, not just wind strength.

    consensus×5 riders

  2. Tremestieri is the more serviceable Messina kite beach, with thermal winds, rescue/school support listed, and fewer beach hazards than Il Pilone.

    majority×3 riders

  3. The coast is not soft white-sand beginner terrain everywhere; riders should expect pebbles, fast-deepening water in places, and shoes are not a bad idea.

    majority×3 riders

  4. Summer crowding is a real access issue around Il Pilone, because the same beach is also a normal bathing and sightseeing spot.

Scene & life

VibeLow-key and local rather than a resort scene — Messina is a working port city, and the kiting here revolves around a handful of schools and clubs, not a beach-bar strip.

History & trivia

Scene & life

  • The Strait of Messina's northern end has a natural whirlpool historically linked to the Scylla and Charybdis myth
  • The Fata Morgana mirage — Sicily appearing to float above the water when viewed from Calabria — is occasionally visible from this stretch of coast

Itinerary idea

Base in Messina for the ferry, tram and normal city life; drive south to Tremestieri for summer thermal sessions, and up to Torre Faro/Il Pilone for the scenic, harder Capo Peloro wind — with a hydrofoil hop to Calabria as a change of scenery.

FAQ

What is the wind like?

Tremestieri's signature wind is the local Grecale, known as the grecalotto or vento Cavaliere, a north to north-east thermal that accelerates through the Strait of Messina; Il Pilone catches a light Scirocco that strengthens as it funnels through the Strait.

Which riding style suits Il Pilone?

Il Pilone supports freestyle and wave riding through the year.
